Brewers sign Grandal to one year deal

That's honestly a good deal for both the Brewers and Grandal.  Grandal gets a year to rebuild his value in a hitter's park after the disaster that was his end of 2018, and the Brewers get a big upgrade at C in what looks to be an extremely competitive NL Central.

Very good article. This deal should not be possible, frankly.

I agree that he should have more than a one year deal, teams are also looking at the back end of contracts and not wanting to get stuck with an investment that is on the downswing.  Grandal is a 30 year old catcher.  Giving him what many projected- four years at $60 million- isn't a smart investment unless you are a luxury tax team.  Grandal giving a full return on that investment behind the plate is an extremely risky proposition.

As far as Milwaukee goes, yeah, they made a huge upgrade, but what about starting pitching?  They're going to have an average at best- likely below average rotation- and it reminds me of the Orioles after 2014.  Their bullpen isn't going to continue to make things up for them.  They had the cost-controlled major league outfielder that the Indians wanted, all they had to do was add in Hiura or a package of another top prospect in their organization and they likely would have had their pick of Kluber or Bauer from the Indians.  Jimmy Nelson will be fully healthy, and putting Kluber/Bauer and Nelson onto a team that was 1 win away from a World Series would make them favorites in that division and for the World Series itself.

Why would we trade Keston Hiura, our only viable "close to ready" minor league middle infielder, when we have massive issues at 2B and SS for a SP when we have youth there that's flashed in the bigs?

Trading Hiura for Kluber made no sense for us.
