Agree, I've been watching James all year. Dude has been solid. Proud of him. Lee, a thumper. James is all around. Bowman is a stopgap; nothing more, nothing less. Not saying use a 1st on a LB, but we could use another non depth guy like James. MrOaktown_56 Posted October 31, 2017 Share Posted October 31, 2017 It's a bit early for the draft, but there are some studs to be had on defense if we pick in the top 15. Minkah Fitzpatrick and Christian Wilkins are day 1 starters and could make a big impact (we could run 3 safeties with Fitzpatrick playing slot and rotating to safety when Obi is in man coverage on tight ends). So far the only thing he has excelled at is sticky tackling in the run game and the occasional thump. A good 2 down linebacker in a cornerback's body so far. A guy like that can be found undrafted. Sorry guys, I just don't see it so far. Has 1 INT in his career and he struggled to catch it last year as it wobbled into his arms. Limited passes defensed, no particular ball skills, bad in man coverage, outmatched against TEs. Poor against the pass in every single facet so far, in a passing league. Luani has played 1 game and looked essentially equal. If our linebackers were not so poor that runners often come through them to Joseph, we might be wondering what he does at all. While I am at it, the love for Edwards and Vanderdoes can kick rocks too. Edwards is solid, nothing more. The guy we hoped he would be and who he was for that 6 game stretch has yet to emerge and may never, on a line where he is seeing single blocks due to Mack all day long. Vanderdoes has yet to make an impact play of any kind in half a season. Other than a highlight reel lucky strike on Jack Conklin. 1 play out of hundreds. Another huge reason the defense is poor beyond Norton, all you have to do is look at our last two drafts. 1st and 2nd round picks, all on defense and all 4 of which did not even play last week. None of whom have contributed anything of note yet. And the 3rds are just as poor. 1st 3 rounds, last two years, all defense, no contributors in the bunch yet. I'm not even referring to stars, impact players, or plus players. They're not even positive contributors. Mack and a bunch of nada, without a scheme and coordinator good enough to hide any of the many personnel flaws. And no, despite what we keep telling ourselves this is not a defense doing respectably. Yeah, points and yards allowed are seemingly lower than last year. But we are the first team in NFL history without an interception for the first 8 games of a season. That is nothing short of horrid, and emblematic of the problem. No plays made, no play makers. Poor in sacks, poor in turnovers, not even a sniff of a defensive score, entirely bereft of impact plays. We keep telling ourselves it's Norton, and it is. But it's an ongoing tendency of Raider fans to lump blame in one place when the truth is that it's bigger than Norton too. It's also a massive lack of playmakers and a unit stuffed with players we overrate as fans. Bowman came off the street and immediately becomes perhaps our second or third best defender. This defense is missing playmakers. Joseph is getting the PFF fan treatment right now. Grades out well on PFF (which is BS) so he must be good. He lost the Chargers game because he couldn't make a stop on Henry twice. But fault Norton for leaving him on that island.... twice. Fact is, if a team wants to move the ball on this team, they can pretty easily. Reggie gets a lot of love for some picks. But his 2nd to 5th round selections have been brutal. And he's found all of 1 (Mack) gamers on defense thus far. Unfair to Obi and Conley. Neither had injury concerns and should bounce back. Vanderdoes is a rookie, give him some time before calling him to the carpet. I do however think a better DC will certainly elevate some of these players.
