Exactly... let's put another aging vet, slowing down back there who's never played the position in the NFL.

We've had a ton of success signing 30+ year old DB's who were good in the past before, why not do it again with Sherman? </sarcasm>

It was me that floated the idea. I actually think he could do it very well. Free safety speed isn't the same as corner speed. Sherman has very good zone instincts and knows how to find the ball/tackle.

Not saying he's a first choice. I'd rather have other guys. But having a vet in the secondary is not a bad idea, considering all the youth. Someone needs to hold these DB's accountable and be able to make calls/read the field.

Maye or John Johnson could do it too. I'm just laying it out there.

My solution to the FS conundrum would be to draft a player with range and instincts (i think there are a few in the 2nd or 3rd rounds possibly though I haven't watched enough yet, maybe Cisco) and instead of overpaying in FA I'd move Joyner back there where he has played well before if the rookie needs time to settle in. I'd spend money on the DL rather than the secondary to help the whole D. This seems like the obvious, value solution to me then get the blue chip guy on the DL.

I'd rather get a known quantity at FS.

Simmons, Maye, Williams or Harris I'd invest long term in.

Harris - I'd take on a 1 year contract to see if he can rebuild his career.

Hooker - Dark horse candidate off injury, take a flier on

And also draft (@ 17 if you're going with a 1 year piece)

I like a future forward approach more than Sherman personally

Joyner is making a lot though. They have Heath for much cheaper so just use him as a stopgap if the rookie isn't ready. Jahleel Addae could also be used for depth and someone familiar with the new defensive coaching staff. He'd be a cheap signing.

Anyway, it doesn't look like there's any deadline to move on from Joyner so they could wait to see what happens in the draft before they make a decision.

But Joyner is or has been a really good safety, he played well there for a game or two this year. Heath is a below average safety so you might as well start the rookie in that case IMO. I'd still keep Heath around for safety #3 spot but Joyner would probably cost less than guys like Simmons and Williams and is probably better than Maye, Harris and Sherman. Hooker is the wild card because of injury and I would take a punt on him but he'd gave to be really cheap and we have to have an alternative in place anyway.

Joyner with a possible restructure is the option I would favour with a talented rookie who could get time in 3 safety sets anyway.

Woodson was playing safety long before he got here. Totally different player and different skill set. He was a defensive MVP with amazing ball skills and instincts.

Sherman is not that player and I don't see him wanting to be. And I'd argue his speed and abilities are fading to even play it well.

I crap on these type things, because it's nonsense. It's desperation and looking in the rearview mirror to try and solve future problems.

He went to FS in 2012.  We signed him in 2013.  You act like he was playing FS for 2-4 years before he got here lol.  And C. Wood is a first ballot HOF, the guy could've probably played LB at a very high level.  Richard Sherman is clearly, CLEARLY inferior to C. Wood.  Damn C. Wood was good.  Anyway, still, I believe Sherman still has enough speed and the knowledge/ability to get it done at FS for us.

Link below is to just stare at and admire C. Woodson's sweet stats he put up.  All those FFs, Sacks, INTs.  Sweet.

Sad that it really took the move to Green Bay to fully blossom to HoF status. Probably one if the most complete defensive players I have seen, it was a joy to watch him in his twighlight years with us just using instincts and IQ to make up for aging limbs 😀 you would think he'd be a great coach maybe?

Please don't put Woodson name in with these other players. You're talking about 1 of the top 10 best cornerbacks of all time.

Simmons, Maye, Williams or Harris I'd invest long term in.

Justin Simmons: Would be a dream come true but as you've mentioned in the past it's hard to see Denver letting him walk. If he does hit free agency though I'd send him over a blank check.

Marcus Maye: Another guy I'd pursue, he'd be cheaper than Simmons, he's only 27, and he has excelled in a true FS role with the Jets.

Marcus Williams: He's only 24 and has been consistent throughout his career with the Saints, he wasn't as good in coverage in 2020 as he was in 2019 but still a guy I'd be happy with.

Anthony Harris: I was big on the Harris train but I've honestly started to cool on him. 2019 was his first season as a full time starter/player and he played at a super high level during a contract year. They tagged him and he wasn't nearly as effective this season and he'll be 30 at the start of next season. He'd obviously be an upgrade but I'd be a little weary of giving him a huge contract considering his age and small sample size of high level play.

John Johnson III: He has had some injury issues but he has played at a borderline elite level for the Rams #1 defense this season. He's only 25 and the Rams are strapped for cash plus have drafted 3 safeties in the last two drafts so they'll probably have to let him walk. He's another guy that I'd be really happy with.

If I had to rank who I'd want us to sign at FS:

1. Justin Simmons

2. John Johnson III

3. Marcus Williams

4. Marcus Maye

5. Anthony Harris

Add Sherman at 6 and that’s a really solid group. We should be able to land a solid FS in free agency. Would be nice if the FS adds range, and leadership to help the young DBs we spent all these picks on.

I'd prefer a younger player that can grow with the rest of our young secondary.

I prefer Marcus Williams but I don’t think we should set the market on a FS unless he is a game changer. Have to be smart with our money, each position has more significance over another. I would rather invest in the trenches, makes the game easier for DBs in my eyes. Probably should cut Brown because He is just a RT. I don’t even think he is the backup LT any longer.... Parker shown he sucks at RT but decent at LT....
