At the end of the summer in 2014, many of us saw this commercial:

This was the birth of mobile wallets, in a sense - MasterCard, Visa and Apple collaborated in creating a methodology to process transactions via modern smartphones. This was more than some of the predecessors in the market such as Google Wallet - this new methodology introduced Tokenization, which was an innovative process to securely transmit customer details without compromising card information. By current security protocol, it's the most secure way to process a card transaction - which would become a very hot topic a few months later, when everyone found out about the Target card breach.

Nearly three years later - a lifetime in technology years - adoption is still lagging. Based on research conducted by Oliver Wyman, only 0.26% of debit card transactions are done via one of the three wallets (Apple, Samsung, Android).

So, simple question. Do you use your mobile wallet? If so, do you like it? If not, why?

Contactless everywhere in London.

Never had a need for Android Pay.

Tried to set it up once but something wasn't right, not bothered since.

Yeah, you guys have had EMV for years. Decades, even. Stateside, we're just joining the chip card and contactless party.

When I went to NYC in 2015 and they asked me to sign the receipt, I hadn't even signed the back of my card to check it against.

I've never signed the back of any of my debit cards. Ever.

OK, but in theory that's what they counter check against, no?

I couldn't believe in the 21st century they didn't have chip and pin machines.

They're supposed to. Or check your id. But I can't remember the last time someone asked for my id when I used my card.

I've still got stuff around me that doesn't have the chip reader.

I have the words "check ID" written on the back of my debit card, in Sharpie ink. It maybe gets checked once every 30 purchases.

Also, from personal experience, I could never put my trust in my phones battery to survive an entire day potentially.

People in London use their phone for everything, maps, camera, phone calls, train timetables, emails and now travel card, wallet and taxi apps like Uber. The other day my phone died at 11pm and I was on my way home, I would have been screwed if I was relying on it.

If you’re traveling around all day without a place to charge your phone, why are you not throwing a charger block into whatever bag you’re using? I have only ever had my phone die on me once when out, and it was literally the first day I moved to Chicago and didn’t have my bag on me.

I don't carry a bag.

Then you got to hang out/be stationary somewhere for sometime.
