Austin Seferian-Jenkins released

Hard to even know what we had there, since he was injured the whole time.  The little bit he did play, looked reasonably promising...but he seems like one of the easier guys to cut and save a decent chunk of cap space, which seems like a big priority this offseason.  I'd rather they cut a guy like that loose, rather than trying to replace a guy like say, Gipson or something.

Opens up yet another need. Don't like this move, if he could stay healthy I think there's considerable upside.

They seem to have very little patience for guys who get injured.

But i don't really blame them in this case.  $6M+ would've been a lot for ASJ even if he were healthy.  His deal was pretty much structured such that he'd have 2018 to prove he's worth that 2019 cap number, or be cut.  Obviously he didn't prove anything last year.  Doesn't make sense to essentially give him a raise based on what he showed.

Have to figure they're eyeballing the 2019 TE Draft Class and expecting they'll land a guy in the first few rounds.  Especially if they go with Foles or something.  Gonna have to invest big at that position in a security blankie for him.  Plus there's already the guys who held down the fort in ASJ's absence last year as some depth and stuff.  Only room for so many pass catching TEs here.  You can find blocking TEs for cheaper.

this TE class is stacked.  TE was a need before it and as i said above this Tad Dickman is reporting this as a False Rumour for the time being even tho it was tweeted by the player.

And we have needs at several positions and only have 5 picks in the first 5 rounds...can only fill so many spots.

If we look to trade up, even less.

Does keeping ASJ at $6M+ actually make TE not a need in the first 4-5 rounds of the draft though?  I don't know how much it really changes things, since i think getting a weapon at TE was always going to be a priority whether we keep ASJ or not.

Cutting a guy like Gipson, i'd agree.  You're just creating a hole that you have to fill but otherwise wouldn't need to touch with your top picks.  But TE?  I just think you're drafting a guy fairly early there anyway, regardless of ASJ.

I didn't think TE was a "need" though.

We need weapons, hence why I was for it, but rookie TE's don't usually go off right away either. I was for drafting one incase, but this makes it pretty much a must to take one in the top 4 rounds.

That's true, it does tend to take a while for rookie TEs to get going.

It's just hard to see that as creating a new "hole" when he hasn't really contributed anything at all to the Jaguars in the first place.  And it's one of the best spots we can really upgrade the "weapons" either way.  I mean...the "need" is a WR who can slot in at the top of the depth chart, not more speedy middle of depth chart guys.  And it's the same with TE where we need a guy who can be a real threat at the top, far more than roster depth and "okayish" guys.

It's always been a "quality" need, rather than a "quantity" one.  ie.  A high pick type need.  We're not improving the weapons much by cluttering up the middle or bottom of the depth charts at WR/TE with late round projects/specialists/developmental guys.  That's not the "need".

So if you're angling to replace the top rung of the depth chart at TE anyway...why keep ASJ around at that premium price when we desperately need to create cap room?  Just spend the money to keep O'Shaughnessy around for cheaper.  Or go shopping for one of the other "decent" #2ish TEs that will be out there on the market instead.  Should be able to find a "decent" guy to fill a roster spot for less than $6M.  Something more like what ASJ's deal looked like for 2018 at half that cap number.

Even healthy, it's not like ASJ is some irreplaceable guy.  He didn't exactly show he's anything more than the 35-50 catch, 250-350 yard guy he looked like in 2017 when he signed for more like $3M on the year.  If that were what his deal looked like for this year, it'd be a no-brainer to just keep him...but it's like double that because it was structured to let him "earn" that with a strong 2018 (which he didn't have).

I mean, if they do keep ASJ around...that's fine too i guess.  I like the guy well enough and thought it was a decent gamble when they signed him.  Just means that's it'll probably come at the expense of someone who is a lot harder to replace and has actually contributed to the Jaguars...thus creating a new hole that didn't exist in 2018.

i disagree there. we just resigned Jarrod wilson to a decebntly significant deal when we could have likely just tended him but instead are paying him like 3 years 9 million. hes shown to be able to replace gipson fairly well like he did vs the steelers in the playoffs.  sure might need to invest in another Safety but if im remembering correct we like reavis at safety so that still gives us something like Wilson/Davis at FS with Harrison/Wilson at SS with reavis probably the 4th safety.

That to me, is creating a hole.  Getting rid of a guy like Gipson and replacing him with the guy who was the "backup" means you're downgrading from what you had in 2017/18 as a starter and at very least, need a really good quality backup just to keep the depth at a comparable level.  Especially when we'll have Harrison coming off an injury to begin with.

Not getting rid of a guy who had like half a dozen catches as a Jaguar.

Doesn't mean they won't do it.  Would pretty much fit their MO.  But promoting decent depth wherever you can find it and cutting the quality starter is exactly how you create holes and decimate your depth.
