Pre-Combine Mock-Offseason. I'm computer limited and lazy so no pictures for you visual learners.

Retained

Bashaud Breeland – 3 years, $19 million (2019 cap hit = $6 million) – Packers lock up Breeland and for the first time in several years are not in dire need of a starting CB.

Ibraheim Campbell – 1 year, $750,000 – liked what I saw from him in limited action last year. Packers choose him over Brice as a backup safety.

Allison (RFA)

All ERFAs

Not Retained

The rest of the UFAs and Brice (no tender)

Released/Restructured

With the news that Graham is very likely to come back, it comes down to Perry and Daniels. I think the Packers initially are leaning “cut Daniels” here so they approach him about a restructure and Daniels takes it. Packers add another year to his contract and reduce his 2019 cap hit by $3 million or so.

Packers similarly approach Perry about a restructure. Perry declines and Packers move on looking big picture at the savings in 2020. Designate him as a June 1 release if that leads to the most savings this year and/or next.

Free Agency

Packers enter FA with about $37-40 million after factoring in the resigned players and the cap savings from Perry/Daniels.

1.     Za’Darius Smith (EDGE) – 6’4”, 275 lbs. – 4 year, 40 million ($9 million cap hit)

Bang for your buck EDGE player who plays like he's hungry. Immediately replaces (and upgrades) Perry as a “heavy” EDGE player. Can slide inside and rush effectively as well.

2.     Henry Anderson (DE) – 6’6”, 300 lbs. – 4 years, 20 million ($5 million cap hit)

Replaces Wilkerson and is an upgrade over him in the pass rush department. Under the radar player the Jets plucked from Indy in 2018. Had 7 sacks last year and plays with a high motor. Would provide a good pass rush element on the inside.

3.     Tre Boston (S) – 6’1”, 205 lbs. – 3 years, 17 million ($5 million cap hit)

Safety add No. 1. Instant starter who can roam the middle of the field, but also plays physical. Veteran presence to what is still a pretty young secondary in Green Bay.

4.     Anthony Harris (S) – 6’1”, 190 lbs. – 4 years, 20 million ($4 million cap hit)

Really of the opinion that Green Bay needs two veteran safeties as I don’t like the idea of having a rookie safety starting with this group and the cupboard is completely bare in terms of returning players. Pretty sure Harris is a Restricted FA (having 3 accrued seasons) but Minnesota is hurting financially, and we swoop in (as we tried with the Bears last year) and steal one of their own.

5.     Cole Beasley (WR) – 5’8”, 180 lbs. – 3 years, $18 million ($5 million cap hit)

Just do it. Guy would be a perfect fit for Rodgers and LaFleur. We lost our slot guy, Beasley replaces (and upgrades) that position. Perfect compliment to the young talent surrounding Adams at the position. Beaz is a 3rd down magnet.

6.     Luke Stocker (TE/HB) – 6’6”, 253 lbs. 2 years, $2 million ($1 million cap hit)

Replaces a Lewis-type roll. Guy is a dependable blocker who got a taste last year playing with LaFleur. Seems like a logical add for a TE room that will be down to Graham and Tonyan prior to the draft.

Draft

Round 1, Pick 12 -- TRADE – Stealing this idea from @Packerraymond because I think it makes even more sense since Washington announced that Smith is basically done for 2019. Add in the rumormill that Denver is high on Lock at No. 10, so when Pick 12 comes along, no “surprise” guys have fallen to us so we make a deal with Washington. Trade Pick 12 to Washington who is trying to jump ahead of Miami at 13 to grab their QB of choice. We move back to 15 and get Washington’s 3rd round pick (pick 76).

Round 1, Pick 15 – Jachai Polite (EDGE) – 6’3”, 250 lbs.

We found our Perry replacement in Smith via FA, now it’s time to get our Matthews-type replacement, the quick-twitch Polite. Won’t be a three-down player right away, but he can bend, run, turn a corner and rush the passer and that’s all I really care about. It’s a close call here between Polite and Burns, but Polite is the pick. Instantly adds juice to our EDGE position.

Round 1, Pick 30 – Mack Wilson (ILB) – 6’2”, 240 lbs.

With the added ammo in the 3rd and 4th rounds, Packers consider moving up into the early 20s to grab Risner or Hockinson, but can’t strike a deal and decide to stay put. With both of those players off the board, Packers consider Fant here, but ultimately go defense and add a play-making ILB to the fold. Wilson is a three-down sideline-to-sideline ILB and immediately upgrades a position I believe needs to be upgraded. Guy has some Hightower to his game as well and can serve as an effective blitzer/rusher in certain packages.

Round 2, Pick 44 – Chris Lindstrom (G) – 6’4”, 305 lbs.

If Dillard is here at No. 44, I probably take him over Lindstrom due to his versatility, but I think he’s gone by our pick. Lindstrom is more limited to the interior, but he’s an instant starter at RG and plugs the largest hole we did not address in FA.

Round 2, Pick 58 – TRADE

With the extra capital, Packers make their move back into Round 2. Packers trade away pick 75 (first 3rd round pick), pick 107 (first 4th round pick) and pick 180 (second 6th round pick) for pick 58 from the Colts.

Pick 58 – Charles Omenihu (DE/EDGE) – 6’6”, 275 lbs.

We have a thread about “draft crushes”... well Omenihu is my early crush. Guy showed up at the Senior Bowl and overall is an impressive athlete that Pettine can use inside and out. Has the big, long frame to play DE on passing downs and is athletic enough to turn the corner and rush from the EDGE on early downs. Some might view him as a tweener in our defense but I see a versatile pass rusher who along with the additions of Smith, Anderson and Polite, helps us reinvent our pass rush.

Round 3, Pick 76 (from Wash) – Kaden Smith (TE) – 6’5”, 250 lbs.

We find our TE in the 3rd round. Smith is best TE prospect on the board with guys like Hock, Fant, Smith all gone. Smith is a complete TE prospect who pairs well with Graham in 2019.

Round 4, Pick 111 (from Wash via HaHa trade) – Saquon Hampton (S) – 6’1”, 205 lbs.

Versatile safety who might be a sleeper. Good player on a terrible Rutgers team. Has experience kick/punt returning as well. Adds depth in our reconstructed safety room.

Round 5, Pick 139 – Ryan Bates (T/G) – 6’4”, 305 lbs.

Versatile player from another Big Ten school, Penn State. Junior who came out a year early and probably should have stayed, but has room to develop. Played both left and right tackle in his last year at PSU, and while his size is not prototypical for a tackle, (only 6’4”), he can serve as a viable backup at OT or slide inside at OG.

Round 6, Pick 171 – James Williams (RB) – 6’0”, 205 lbs.

Williams is a Washington State product who could end up being a higher mid-round prospect, but I think he falls due to not being an overall great runner or pass-blocker. What is he good at? Catching the football. Guy caught 83 passes last year for WSU and 71 the year before. Could make the team as a No. 3 behind Jones/Williams.

Round 7, Pick 202 – Rodrigo Blankenship (K)

(1): 7th round. (2): GM who drafted 2 special teams specialists in his first draft. (3): Overpaid, inconsistent kicker on the roster. Might as well spend a 7th on a kicker to come in and challenge Crosby with the hopes that Blankenship lights it up and we can clear $3-4 million dollars in cap by dumping Crosby.

Way Too Soon 53-Man Roster

QB (3): Rodgers, Kizer, Boyle

RB (4): Jones, Williams (Jamal), Williams, Bibbs

WR (6): Adams, Beasley, MVS, ESB, Allison, Kumerow

TE (4): Graham, Smith, Stocker, Tonyan

OL (8): Bakhtiari, Taylor, Linsley, Lindstrom, Bulaga, Spriggs, Bates, Patrick

DL (7): Clark, Daniels, Anderson, Lowry, Lancaster, Adams, Omenihu (also EDGE)

EDGE (4): Smith, Polite, Fackrell, F. Brown

ILB (4): Martinez, Wilson, Burks, Morrison

CB (6): Alexander, Breeland, King, Jackson, Brown, Undrafted FA (there’s always one)

S (4): Boston, Harris, Campbell, Hampton

Specials (3): Blankenship/Crosby, Scott, Bradley

Notable cuts: McCray, J. Jones, Gilbert, Moore, Light, Looney

Don't think the Beasley contract is too out of line.  The guy always shows up.  He's an underrated receiver.  Have an issue cutting Josh Jones.  I still like him.  Stuck up for DaVante Adams, Kyle Fackrell, and now Jones.  I still think he can be a player.  Kid has some nasty to him which I really like.  Expect him to finally break out this year.

Why not?  Team needs serious talent upgrade one way and/or another.  If the dollars fit with the free agent talent available ... why not?  Had enough of the draft and develop the past few years with mixed results.  I do believe in draft and develop ... need to fill holes that didn't pan out in the process.

I could see a Smith, Beasley pick or a Smith, Boston pick-up, but agree with Arthur...signing 6 FAs just don't see it happening. Also see Polite in the latter 1st round more at 30 and not at 12-15 range. Have to wonder if the Packers would take an OG in the second round? Suspect they will be targeting OTs and maybe turning them into OGs.

Yea we've got the money, plus Stocker is close to a min guy so it's more like 5 real FA adds. We have the money to spend and I'd rather address more needs than blow $15 mil on a single EDGE guy or $12 mil on a safety like Collins.

If we gave Cole Beasley that contract I'd be calling for Gute and Ball to be fired.

What would you offer? I thought of the Pats getting Hogan at 3 years, $12 mil and that was years ago, and Beasley is the better player. The Jags paid Moncrief like $10 mil for one season last year....WRs get paid.
