The problem with even cutting Kwiatowski is that we don’t have the picks to replace him.

Cuting Kwit and replacing him with a 5th round pick saves you 1.5 million.

Replacing him with a vet saves you less.

Yeah, I don't think you can release your #3 ILB with no sure replacement, a limited number of picks, and other priorities for those picks.

He may not be a top grade starter in this defense due to lack of speed but he can play and not kill you if he needs to.  He's also an ST stud.

We won't know more about Iggy until this summer and how quickly he's picked up the defense so I'm content to leave ILB well enough alone and worry about other holes we need to fill.

I'm sure we gained a few mil more of cap space by re-doing Long's deal and we can squeeze more out of some others if Pace chooses to go that route.

I would not hate a Robinson extension and allowing them to be a little more liquid this offseason.

I'd tend to encourage it especially since we really didn't get full value last year.

Nothing about his play, his attitude, and his willingness to play in a big game even though injured would discourage me from adding more time and $$$ to his current deal.

If we squeeze up to 4M I am with Windy in principle not to convert or restructure anymore deals. We do need that future CAP when current rookie deals are due to be extended, etc.

I still might do an extension with ARob to recover a little more.

We only signed him for 3 years so extending him for two more to get a little more breathing room isn't a bad deal when it sure looks like he's the guy whose gonna be our #1 WR going forward and he's only 25 years old.

I would think being able to at least compete to keep Callahan and/or make some plays in FA for some depth at OLB and OL would be nice.

Well, if anyone else is a good candidate it is ARob. So much upside and still very young.

We keep hearing about Tavon Young's deal setting the market for Callahan but a look at the terms tells us only $13 mil of his deal is guaranteed.

Given Callahan's injury history of playing in just 75%/36 of 48 games over the past three years it would seem that an offer of roughly 80% of Young's deal is more than fair.  That would put his deal worth roughly $20.5 over three years with something in the neighborhood of $10-$10.5 mil guaranteed.

Malagabear is also very good at working out some numbers for this but for example; if we gave him a $7.5 SB and a $2.5 mil salary for 2019 our cap cost is a more affordable $5 mil, he gets $10 mil cash year one guaranteed, and we've covered all or most of his guaranteed money.  In 2020 his salary increases to $3.5 mil with an additional $1 mil in per game bonuses so he can earn up to $4.5 mil if he plays all 16 games and he's received up to $14.5 mil cash over 2 years.  Cap cost in 2020 = $6-$7 mil  Dead cap in 2020 = $5.5 mil

Year three his deal calls for another $6 mil which could be a combination of salary and roster bonus but his dead cap is only $2.5 mil so if his play doesn't warrant it he can easily be released having earned $14.5 mil for two years provided he can stay on the field.  That's 88% as much as the max. Young will earn in 2019 and 2020 and we have what amounts to another 2 year deal with an option for 3.

Contract Notes

Tavon Young signed a 3 year contract extension with the Baltimore Ravens on February 20, 2019.  The extension is worth $25,800,000 with $13,000,000 guaranteed.  The guarantee consists of a $10 million signing bonus, $1 million salary guarantee in 2019; and $2 million salary guarantee in 2020.  Total paper value of the contract is $27,845,000 which includes the $2 million which Young was scheduled to earn in 2019 prior to the extension.

I read that the Bears were back and forth with Amos but I think the sticking point will be his desire to be paid top 5 wh8ch I think Pace will be unwilling to do.

The problem I see with that is the top five contracts for SS are all over the place.  For example;

Miami; Reshad Jones 5yr/$60mil/$35mil gtd/$12mil aav

Seattle; Kam Chancellor 3yr/$36mil/$25mil gtd/$12mil aav

Balt.; Tony Jefferson 4yr/$34mil/$19mil gtd/$8.5 mil aav

Denver; Darian Stewart 4yr/$28mil/$17.5 gtd/$7mil aav

Buffalo; Micah Hyde 5yr/$30.5mil/$14mil gtd/$6.1mil aav.

So where does Amos slot in?

If he and Pace could come to an agreement on a deal in the range of what Hyde or Stewart got it's probably doable.  In both cases they had year one cap hits of $4 mil to $4.65 mil and over the first three years their caps hits average just under $6 mil per year.  And in both cases there's a back door after year three with only $3 mil in dead cap vs cap hits of roughly $6.5 mil.  Those are both fair deal as far as I'm concerned.

If we look at Tony Jefferson's contract due to restructuring it twice it's become a time bomb for Balt because his 2019 cap hit is $12.657 mil and if they trade or release him they still have an $8.823 mil dead cap hit.  It's a good example of how too much restructuring can paint teams into a corner but fortunately Baltimore has over $50 mil of cap room this year so they can absorb it.

Current Contract

Tony Jefferson signed a 4 year, $34,000,000 contract with the Baltimore Ravens, including a $10,000,000 signing bonus, $19,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $8,500,000. In 2019, Jefferson will earn a base salary of $8,000,000, while carrying a cap hit of $12,656,666 and a dead cap value of $8,823,334.

The Bears could do the above contract for either Callahan or Amos.

Young's deal was an extension so the Ravens got a bit of a cap break in 2019. Because Callahan turns 28 this year and has in injury history I was trying to create a back door after year two since his cap jumps to $8.5 mil in year three.  By then we should have been able to draft a replacement.

Amos is two years younger so doing a 5 year deal with him with a back door after 3 years shouldn't be a problem.  IMHO if Amos would agree to a deal similar to this one (Micah Hyde) it's probably doable and one he could probably play out.  We might have to bump his bonus up a couple of mil and his year 4 and 5 salaries to get his AAV up to $7 mil but getting him locked up for 3 years would be my goal.

Current Contract

Micah Hyde signed a 5 year, $30,500,000 contract with the Buffalo Bills, including a $8,000,000 signing bonus, $14,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $6,100,000. I wouldn’t give Amos any of those contracts. I like him but I maintain he’s the most replaceable piece on a loaded defense outside of MAYBE Amukamara, and he loses out to Prince on positional importance.
