kurgan mock offseason v.1

OK... lemme just try to add some context in at this point.

First, I will be the first to admit that I am not a expert on TJ Edwards.  I wanted to target a backup for VWill, but if he is even a better coverage backer than him, that is a plus.

Second issue is the discussion of Willis in the second.  Here is the rationale... every year we complain about how many snaps we put on Tuitt and Heyward.  Every year.  We sign guys like Alualu and want guys like Walton to step up and play a bigger part.  I believe that the answer is more DE snaps for Hargrave, but maybe not.  So, in this mock offseason, I believed that I addressed the Edge and ILB issue, leaving the biggest issue left for the defense on the health/rotation of the defensive line.  Hence, Willis.

Third issue--Shaq has stated that he is not coming to a city to be a backup.  He could get that in Denver.  He wants to be the man.  He will be here.

Biggest issue: depth of ILB and the depth chart at ILB.  Perhaps I was confusing when I listed the starters for the ILB with VWill, Fort and Red.  Later on, I had Buchannon as the dime backer.  Let me further explain my hypothesis.

In 'base 3-4' VWill is the plugger and Buchannon, in this case, would be the cover guy.  Fort can cover up Buchannon in this case, and even in 3rd and long, Fort AND Buchannon can come on the field.

Subpackages (which is the new base, BTW), would include any number of VWill, Fort, Buchannon or Hilton, based on personnel or down and distance.  4-2-5, Hilton as nickel and Buhcannon as dimebacker.  3-3-5, Fort as the MLB, Buchannon as the 'adjuster', Hilton and Sutton as the 'dogs.'  Hell, you could even run Shaq and TJ in the old 2-4-5 WITH the backend all together.  I think some of the confusion comes from what Buchannon is.  To me, he is the PERFECT addition that we thought Burnette was going to be, with the exception of being a true MLB in Arizona.  He is a better Fort, better Burnette.  Hence, the big investment.  The lack of a true MACK, as we know it, is a misnomer.  That guy doesn't exist, and even more, can be schemed around.

So, in conclusion, I am NOT advocating for VWill and Fort as the starting MLB.  I mean, if that happens in short yardage or at times on run downs, OK.  But, understand that Buchannon is and what he does.  The alternative is drafting Devin Bush or Mack Wilson in the first, then yelling about why our corners can't cover for another year.

You can say Barrett will be the man and you will be disappointed.  At best he is a Chick replacement but much better than Chick.  He is not as good as Dupree.

What exactly does Dupree do that well in your eyes?   Im not saying Barrett is better or anything, but you sound like the guys who used to defend Worlids despite how mediocre he was, too.     What part of Dupree's game would you classify as being average or better, because I dont really see it.   Not being a smart-arse either....just looking for clarification and maybe some perspective.

What does Barrett do well that anyone thinks he is better than Dupree?  He has less sacks and has played a season longer so it can't be sacks.  At best you can point to forced fumbles stat because Dupree has been superior in all ways to Barrett.  I understand that Dupree is not Harrison and that the grass is greener and all that but what has Barrett shown that he can be a starter in the league and not a backup?

Barrett for me isn't better than Dupree, he is better than the rest of our depth.   The problem with Dupree is he really does struggle to get around the tackles, he runs 50 extra yards to get 2 yards beyond the los.

OK... taking a crack at a mock offseason.  A lot of this is lost in the mists of numbers and accounting, but from nearest I can tell, these are close to accurate.  Also, I am doing this one in a dream world where AB, Tomlin, ArtII and Ben all get into a room and work out their issues with an eye on winning NOW.

Great post and a lot of detail.  I would like to see some things get hashed with the AB situation. However,  I think that it is time for the break-up to take place.  The situation is what it is and it seems that egos are too big to humble themselves and go forward (by all parties involved). At this point, the best I can hope for is an amicable break-up. There is plenty of fault and finger pointing to go around, but the organization needs to move forward from all of this drama.  The funny thing is that I believe that AB could have come out smelling like a rose, had he handled the situation differently (at least in the court of public opinion). This would have been like Bell in that had Bell not had some of the off field problems and immaturity, he probably would have been able to get the little bit more he was asking.

According to overthecap.com, we are sitting at:

+19.2 mil

Transactions:

+26.8 (cut Morgan Burnett and Marcus Gilbert)

Agree 100% I was never a fan of the Burnett signing. He is a high character guy, but I didn't feel like he was a good fit.  I am a Tre Boston fan for our defense. I think that Marcus Gilbert is one of the best two or three RT's in the entire NFL when healthy.  The problem is that he can't seem to stay healthy and he has a big cap number.

On 2/8/2019 at 12:44 PM, kurgan said:

+52.9 (extend Ben, Haden and Pouncey)

+57.1 (resign/extend Dupree to get his 9 mil down)

A lot of fans are aginst re-signing Bud, but I think he is trending upward with his play.  He is not the pass rusher or complete OLB that we had hoped for, but I do think he is capable of being a solid contributor. The question is would he accept a cap friendlier salary?

How far into bed do we go with extending Haden and Big Ben?

On 2/8/2019 at 12:44 PM, kurgan said:

+51.5 (resign Sensabaugh, Fort, Grimble, Rogers, Finney, Jesse James, Walton, Jordan Berry, Chickillo and all ERFA)

It is business savvy to re-sign them to cap friendly numbers, but I would hope that I could find replacements for Grimble, Berry and Chickello through the draft, free agency or on the roster. Hopefully Adams or Adeniyi can replace Chick, Bucky can replace Grimble and they can sign or draft punting competition.  I am not sure of what Berry's ceiling is and special teams needs to improve dramatically.  I would have tried to replace Danny Smith. I am not impressed with what he has done and all of the penalties, etc.

On 2/8/2019 at 12:44 PM, kurgan said:

+41.5 (rounding errors, draft pick pool, buffer for in season)

+29.0 (Sign Dimebacker Deone Buchannon to a contract-- 3 years at 12.5 per with around $20 mil gar.)

I personally would prefer Tre Boston.  He gives the team some stability in the back end and allows Edmonds or Davis to fill the Dimebacker role which they are better suited to do.  This team needs a true safety.  Our secondary has not been the same since the savvy Ryan Clark left.

On 2/8/2019 at 12:44 PM, kurgan said:

+19.0 (Sign OLB Shaquil Barrett to contract--3 years at 10.0 per with around $17 mil gar.)

He doesn't give us what Bud does at OLB.  While Bud doesn't get a lot of sacks, he had more consistent pressure at times rushing than Watt did most of the season. If you could transition him into a Nickel/Dime ILB like the Steelers did with Joey Porter back in the day, he would be more athletic than Bostic, but also not as instinctual.  Bostic was solid early on and did well shoring up the run defense, but he got completely exposed in pass coverage and dropping.  While Shaq would offer another athletic type  there. He seems a bit too expensive, and I am just not sold on paying him.  I would take my chances in the draft or signing a veteran who gets cut.

On 2/8/2019 at 12:44 PM, kurgan said:

+13.0 (Sign WR John Brown to contract--2 years at 6.0 per)

I think he could be a nice fit for our offense. He can stretch a defense and hopefully could get on the same page as Big Ben. Skills are there and could be a solid vertical threat.

On 2/8/2019 at 12:44 PM, kurgan said:

+10.5 (After some time in FA--OG Ramon Foster comes home for a retirement tour--2 years at 2.5 per to ride off)

I would love this, but I would be shocked if he signed that low.  I think this is very wishful thinking.

On 2/8/2019 at 12:44 PM, kurgan said:

+2.5 (Sign WR Dontae Moncreif to contract--2 years at 8 per)

I wouldn't see the Steelers signing two veteran WR's, even if they lost AB.  They draft well at the position and they would most likeley try to draft and develop another guy to go with Ju Ju and Washington.I think it would be Moncrief or Brown.

On 2/8/2019 at 12:44 PM, kurgan said:

0 (Sign DT/NG Danny Shelton--2 years 2.5 per)

I have been a Danny Shelton fan since college.  He would be nice for the middle of our defense and I agree would further help the development and skills of Hargraves.  Many people think that Shelton is simply one-dimensional.  While he is not and will never be a great pass rusher, his strength and ability to tie up the middle allows Hargaves to go one on one and he can beat a most OG's pass rushing and penetrating.

On 2/8/2019 at 12:44 PM, kurgan said:

Rationale:  Buchannon solves the dimebacker issue right now, the right way.  He is a gamer and a weapon that can be used as a TRUE dimebacker.  Barrett gives us the pass rush that we are missing, and wants to go to a place where he can be the guy.  He can take Dupree's spot right away and make him the sub player.  John Brown is a true slot weapon that is still in a spot that he can play and do really well.  In this mock offseason, he becomes a true slot weapon and #3 reciever.  Moncreif is the guy that Hunter never was.  Big, tall, rangy and a combat catcher.  Also a net for James Washington, who if he doesn't come around, we know that Moncrief can be a true outside threat.  Shelton signs at the end as another nose, but more importantly, allows Hargrave to act more as a DT in subpackages to get Tuitt and Heyward some breaks.  Finally, after both sides waffling on the future, Foster comes home for the retirement tour.

Not a fan of Buchannon for our defense. Similar skills to the other safeties that we have. We don't need another "dimebacker"  we need a true safety.  I am on the Tre Boston train. Brown is a burner and Moncrief is probably a little more complete/total WR in my book.  I could see one, but not both. The Shelton move I like because we play a lot of specialty packages and he offers some size, strength and stoutness in the middle.  He is great for teams who like to run against the nickel and dime. Despite being older, Foster still wants to get paid. I don't think anyone will break the bank for him, but he can get a decent deal.

2019 Mock Draft:

1:20--De'Andre Baker, CB UGA  5'11" 185

Still the #1 priority to fix IS CB.  Addressing edge and ILB in FA allows us to take the best CB that will be here.  I am a homer, so for me, is Baker.  A true corner that can lock down a side.  May not be the best athlete, but he is a superior technique guy.  We know all the accolades, the guy can play and almost start from Day 1.

The Steelers need help at CB, ILB and OLB.  They historically struggle selecting guys at two of those three positions in the Mike Tomlin era.

2:52--Gerald Willis III, 5T Miami  6'4" 285

Long term DE is needed here, and Willis can play this and play it well.  Stout against the run and able to get pass rush, he can learn at the knee of Tuitt and Heyward and take reps there as the season moves on.  With Hargrave as the true backup at this point, Willis will take over and then make Hargrave a super player along the line.

If we have Walton, sign Shelton and could possibly keep Tyson at a decent number, No need to go DT this high in my opinion. OLB, ILB, WR, TE or RB seem like there may be higher value here.  It is early, but that would be my counter to a 5T DL.

3:84--Nate Davis, OG UNC-Charlotte  6'3" 311

Powerful run blocker that is mobile, can pull, and can learn how to be a Steeler type lineman.  Can develop with Finney as the stopgap as needed, and the Steelers can develop him long term as the replacement for Foster.  Grimy blue collar guy who punishes people and does it at a small school that does not win much.

I could possibly see this if they can't re-sign Foster, but under your scenario where they do, I would go from the BPA from the positions above.

4:116--Justice Hill, RB Oklahoma State  5'10" 190

Perfect compliment to Connor/Samuel.  Quick twitch guy who can lean and run, hit zones, and make some break away runs.  Not a home run hitter per se, but can hit a hole and be gone in a second.  Great pass catcher as well, and can be used in that phase.  Also, as a bonus, same program as Rudolph and Washington, so the familiarity is there.

I like this pick.  Great value and solid to add to what this team needs in terms of depth.

On 2/8/2019 at 12:44 PM, kurgan said:

6:162 --T.J. Edwards, MLB Wisconsin 6'1" 248

Yes, another Wisconsin linebacker.  Edwards is a plugger who is made to play in the middle of a defense and stop 1 gap runs.  Clearly a backup for VWill, he will be the trainee at that spot.  Only a 2 down player, is a liability in coverage.  But, another hoss that can plug weak A gap and tackle over top if needed.

6:180 --B.J. Blunt, OLB/SS/Dime McNeese State 6'0" 203

Saw him at the Shrine Game and fell in love.  Hell, even Colbert did.  Dude is a player and a leader.  Is the amp up guy, the hype man, the do everything dude you want on your team and hate to see on the other team.  At WORST, he is a 4 phase special teamer who makes his name and money covering kicks and blowing people up.

7:197--Sean Bunting, CB Central Michigan  6'1" 181

Developmental CB from a small school in the MAC.  Taller, angular corner that excels in zone coverage and can be trained to be a competitor and push the younger corners on the roster.

NOTABLE UDFAs:

Jesse Burkett, OC Stanford 6'3" 304  (Powerful run blocker and captain.)

Tyre Brady, WR Marshall 6'3" 301 (Jump ball specialist, big target for Ben)

DeMarcus Christmas, NG 6'4" 309 (Plugger, new Shade Tree)

Last 4 Cuts:

TE Xavier Grimble, WR Eli Rogers, DT L.T. Walton, LB JAMES BOSTIC (What??)

I think Eli can make the team again.  He always seems to get counted out, but responds and performs.  We had success with 5 WR's and he and Switzer can give slot CB's fits. Walton, while not a stud is a valued back-up who is familiar with our system. I could see Bostic getting cut if the team drafts or signs an ILB.  LJ Fort is coming on as well and probably has the inside edge at starting going forward based on his ability to cover and blitz (save covering WR's like Keenan Allen).O.o

Practice Squad:

OT Zach Banner, TE Jake McGee, RB Trey Edmunds, OLB Keion Adams, OLB Ola Adeniyi, OC Jesse Burkett (UDFA), WR Tyre Brady (UDFA), DeMarcus Christmas (UDFA), MLB T.J Edwards (6th round pick), CB Sean Bunting (7th round pick)

53 Man Roster (underlines are gameday inactives):

QB: Big Ben, Mason Rudolph, Josh Dobbs (Open competition for the backup... Rudolph wins and puts Dobbs on the bench, but he is a perfect #3)

I agree here, but don't sleep on Dobbs.  No doubt that everyone is expecting Mason to take the next step, but I think Dobbs intelligence and he will mature more in the offense will help him compete and make this a tough choice. He is not ever going to be the QB that we want to use as the starter, but he can come in and win a game or two if he continues to develop. (Save throwing him to the Raiders):$

On 2/8/2019 at 12:44 PM, kurgan said:

RB: James Connor, Jaylen Samuels, Justice Hill (Great mix of the franchise back, the hammer and the change of pace)

FB: Rosie Nix (Another year, another special teamer and lead blocker)

Agreed. Solid backfield. No Bell distractions help Conner/Samuels become an effective one-two combo.

On 2/8/2019 at 12:44 PM, kurgan said:

TE: Vance McDonald, The Outlaw, Bucky Hodges (in a bit of a surprise, Hodges wins because of his mismatch nightmare and puts Grimble on the street)

I like what Bucky can develop into, but I would hope the team looks at adding more competition here through the draft or free agency. The Ravens Maxx Williams is a guy that I would look at adding to the mix.  Vance has a history of injuries.  Outlaw is decent, but not spectacular.  Hodges is developing and in the same class as Grimble.  Williams can add punch to the TE position like Vance did and make that become a strength with Vance and Outlaw.  That is a very solid group of TE's. It improves our run game and our short to intermediate passing as well as gets a little revenge on the Rat Birds by taking one of their players.

On 2/8/2019 at 12:44 PM, kurgan said:

WR: AB, Juju, John Brown, Dontae Moncrief, James Washington, Ryan Switzer (Ok, since two TEs are active, all 6 WR are.  4 wide would be killer, and Washington can be ready to go without any pressure.  Switzer is the returner and backup slot guy.)

Unless someone is offering some magic beans, AB is probably gone.  I don't think the Steelers will just give him away, but I think AB is gone.  My guess is Brown or Moncrief.  I would prefer Moncrief of the two. Lastly I keep Eli.  1. Ju Ju 2. Moncrief 3. Washington 4. Switzer 5. Eli 6. Draft a WR between rounds 1 - 4

On 2/8/2019 at 12:44 PM, kurgan said:

OT: AVilly, Matt Feiler, Jerald Hawkins, Chuks Okarafor (Alejandro is the LT.  The RT is an open spot for the best to win.  Second place will be the swing, and then the last place will be inactive.  In my opinion, Feiler will be the winner, Chuks as the swing, and Hawkins will be inactive on gamedays.)

OG/OC: DDC, Foster, Pouncey, Finney, Davis (Interior stays the same, with Finney as the swing.  Davis stays up and is inactive.  He learns and gets better)

I think they need to draft a back-up C/G type.  Because of this weakness BJ Finney stays as the starter in my book.  Unless the Steelers are willing to pay Foster in the $4 - $5 range, he is gone.  Only way I see Foster staying is  no one else is willing to pay Foster that much. Foster wants Iupati or Levitre type of  money, I doubt he gets that much, but at 33, would the Steelers be willing to pay between $4 and $5 million to keep Foster? I would look to sign a veteran for insurance like Chance Warmack to help meet his potential or Quinton Spain who is a solid starter and could possibly be signed for what you would want to pay Foster. Spain is younger as well and would offer more cap space flexibility on a longer deal for a  27 year old.

On 2/8/2019 at 12:44 PM, kurgan said:

DL:  Cam Heyward, Javon Hargrave, Stephon Tuitt, Danny Shelton, Gerald Willis III  (All are active.  First three are in on 'base,' then in subpackages things can get strange.  Hargrave can kick out, Shelton can work the 1 tech, even Heyward at some end.)

Shelton replaces Mt. McCullers and I keep Walton or Tyson and I add Markus Golden from Arizona because they play so much Nickel and Dime. Golden can play DE and rush more naturally with his hand down.  This offers me flexibility on the DL and with Watt and Bud at OLB.

On 2/8/2019 at 12:44 PM, kurgan said:

OLB:  T.J. Watt, Shaq Barrett, Dupree, Chickillo  (Watt and Barrett start, and play both base and in subpackages.  Dupree is the flop guy, playing both sides in reserve.  Chick kicks to ST only, like Dirty Red, and plays in emergency).

I think Dupree and Watt stay the starters.  They draft someone and both Adams and Adeniyi make the roster over Chickello.

On 2/8/2019 at 12:44 PM, kurgan said:

ILB:  VWill, Dirty Red, Fort (Yes, only 3.  VWill is the two down run plugger.  Fort CAN play as a second guy in base and be the cover guy.  Dirty Red is basically only a special teamer at this point, but a good one)

I am hoping that they draft an ILB or if they sign someone, they sign a player who can play more of a natural 4-3 MLB and drop into coverage in their pass defense schemes.

On 2/8/2019 at 12:44 PM, kurgan said:

Dimebacker: Deone Buchannon, B.J. Blunt (This is the new spot.  With nickel and dime being the new base, Buchannon will be on the field most of the time.  He will be the coverbacker against slots and TE, and the filler on draws and screens.  Even in more 'base' packages, he can play some safety.  In the surprise of camp, BLUNT makes the active roster.  He becomes a special teams demon and is on everything while learning from Deone and doing a little bit of stuff.

Corners:  Joe Haden, De'Andre Baker, Artie Burns, Cam Sutton, Mike Hilton, Coty Sensabaugh, Brian Allen (Inactives are hard to tell here, but if Burns does not figure it out, he might be out.  Allen is a ST ace and young guy, so might get some play here, even taking over for Burns.  Sutton and Hilton fight for nickleback duties, with Hilton even getting some burn at FS.  Sensabaugh hopefully is inactive, but stays around for insurance again.)

I am hoping there is much more of a shake-up at CB here. Artie is great young man, but not good in our system and needs to go. Cody is a good/cheap reserve, but I would hope to sign or draft someone better.  Allen and Cam need to step up or step-off.  Again, an influx of talent is needed here via draft and free agency and some ties should be cut.  Haden, Baker, Hilton, Cam, new blood, newer blood or Allen.

On 2/8/2019 at 12:44 PM, kurgan said:

Safeties:  Terrell Edmunds, Sean Davis, Marcus Allen, Jordan Dangerfield (With Hilton and Buchannon having ability to play in the back, Danger and Allen don't get jerseys.  But, they are ready if needed.)

I am signing a true safety like Tre Boston to start alongside Edmunds and Davis.  The Steelers are doing more three safety alignments, so I am set with putting a big athletic kid like Edmunds in the box or as your dimebacker.  We called that a Monster Back in the old days.

On 2/8/2019 at 12:44 PM, kurgan said:

Specialists: Chris Boswell, Jordan Berry, Cameron Kanaday (Boswell sees a sports psychologist and gets things figured out.  Berry gets better and better.  Kanaday is Kanaday.)

Kanaday is the only guy who I have penned in ink. I believe Boz will bounce back, but I have competition in for both he and Berry.  The man wins.

Overall thoughts:  The offense is now set up the best for us RIGHT NOW.  Ben will have weapons now to throw the ball around, while the line and backs are built to hurt people when they sell out to stop the throwing.  The offense should be more dynamic now.

Defensively, we are more set up to stop what hurts us.  Our secondary has talent now, and a year older in some places, and should be able to stop people.  The variable of the front line will help, and the backers are more solid and we can get to the passer.

Please let me know what you think!!!  Opinions are HELPFUL.  I want to do another one of these at some point, but need feedback and discussion!!!!

Strong and well thought out post.  There are a few tweaks or differences that I would make, but I understand your thinking.  I would try to add a solid free agent TE like Maxx Williams.  As long as I get a good deal, I am trying to get a few good picks for AB and I use that on upgrading where we are weak CB, ILB, WR.  On defense I like signing a true NG like Shelton to replace McCullers.  We need to successfully draft an ILB and CB on defense.  Depth can be had via draft, cuts or free agency. I still have some studying to do about the draft and free agents, but I wanted to give some feedback.  I enjoyed reading your post.

You didnt really answer my question, but okay.

I never said Barrett is better.    But as @wwhickok said, he will cheap depth and better than Chickillo and cheaper than Dupree.     Dupree doesnt really do much well, and sorry, I dont feel like paying $6m/year to a guy who isnt starter quality and is, at best, an average AT BEST subpackage LB.

But, if we are content with watching the continued stagnation of our defense, lets keep retaining proven mediocre talent.

The OP showed Barrett as the starter.  I was pointing out he is a worst starter than Dupree and he would be a replacement for Chick.  If you are going to replace Dupree do not do it without someone either worst or average just because they might be cheaper.

Yes... in my opinion, Barrett is better.  That is why I listed him as a starter.  Stats are stats.  He has never been a starter.  He was a UDFA (that we were interested in) and worked his way up from nothing to serious playing time.  Now he is stuck behind All Pro Von Miller and #1 pick Bradley Chubb.  He wants to go to a place where he can have a chance to be the guy.  Watch the film.  He is what you want.... a pass rusher with a plan.  He can get to the QB.  Yes, Dupree has more sacks, but on tons more snaps.  The difference for me is a guy that worked for it, and a guy that was given it.  Worst case... the loser of the comp is the swing guy to spell them both... so yes, an upgrade on Chick.

Anyway, I think that anyone that thinks that we are going to hit on a big FA is crazy.  We are not going to sign Clowney, Clark or anyone like that.  We will use our space for role players and depth.  That is what we do.  Guys in this mock like Shelton, Brown, Moncreif and Barrett are not sexy, but that is closer to what we would do than laying it all on the line for one guy.  PLUS, there are not that many helpful FA out there, to be honest.  What is the biggest name FA CB???

He was not stuck behind Chubb for 3 years.

I like Markus Golden.  He will be a FA that is coming off a bad season after recovering from injury.  He is better at pass rushing than Dupree.  I am not sure about his coverage but he is one I would sign in a second and he could be better than Dupree becasue he has proved it.
