Did Marvin Lewis underachieve with the Bengals?

I'm not arguing whether or not he deserved to be fired because of course he did considering how long he was there with 0 playoff wins. At some point you need a change. I am curious about what the general consensus is about whether he underachieved though. Outside of Forrest Gregg (who only coached 4 seasons), he's the only coach in Bengals history with a winning record and obviously has the most playoff appearances as well. Gregg and Wyche were able to get their teams to a super bowl though.

Overall do you feel he underachieved in his time there? Which Bengals teams do you think could have gone further?

2005,  2013, 2015. Or heck one of the years they made the playoffs just make it out of the wild card round. Lewis made the playoffs 7 seasons out of 16 (not a great percentage even). Lost in the WC every one.

They definitely should have beaten the Steelers in 2015. They basically gave that game away with how undisciplined they were. They were about even with that Texans team. No way do I think they should have beaten the Steelers in 2005.

They won the division and went 11-5. You should make it out of the wild card round.

For several years, Bengals roster was acknowlegded as being one of the best with a lot of talent on both offense and defense. For some reason they never figured out to win in the playoffs, so in that regard Marvin Lewis didn't come through. Overall he did have a lot of succes, but it was time for a change and maybe that change should have been made when the roster had the potential to go deep into the playoffs.

From a playoff perspective, absolutely.  But he brought the team back to a level of respectability.  he almost made the playoffs 50% of the time.  He led Mike Brown out of the 1970s and straight into the 21st century in many aspects (pretty much everything except free agency).

They played the Texans on the road twice, including in one season where ESPN predicted them to legit go 0-16.  The playoff game vs. the Jets was a disaster.  They played the Steelers both times (2005, 2015) with their starting QBs a total of ONE passing play (Carson's ACL injury, and Dalton broke his thumb a few weeks prior...against the Steelers).  They absolutely should have beaten the Chargers in 2013.  They lost to the Colts in 2014 when starting exactly ZERO WRs or LBs from their projected lineup due to injuries.

I'd like to thank him for many of the things he accomplished, but in the end, it was time yo go.  He was the very definition of medicre.  During his tenure, we were clearly above many teams, but never consistent enough to reach the next level.

2005 comes with a big asterisk because Carson Palmer blew out his knee in that game. 2015 they had AJ McCarron starting.

Talent on offense and defense is subjective of course, but the Bengals definitely suffered from bad coaching/personnel decisions IMHO.

You had a head coach that made the following decisions over the course of his tenor:

  • Tank Johnson starting over Geno Atkins
  • Robert Geathers (post-microfacture surgery) starting over Carlos Dunlap for multiple seasons
  • Michael Johnson over Carl Lawson
  • Keeping Michael Johnson instead of Margus Hunt or Chris Smith
  • Activating Cedric Peerman instead of William Jackson III off IR
  • Playing Adam Jones and Dre Kirkpatrick instead of WJIII
  • Starting Jeremy Hill instead of Joe Mixon or Gio
  • Starting Jeremy Hill and not giving any playing time to Rex Burkhead
  • Nate Livings over Evan Mathis
  • Alex Redmond over Christian Westerman

I can keep going, but Marvin Lewis made a lot of dumb personnel decisions...
