Chargers decline option on Corey Liuget

He was an underrated player for us though ultimately not worth his contract. Not sure if he's a scheme fit with Bradley's defense either. But he did his best to adapt during these two years. Having him in the lineup definitely helped us against the run (not sure we win some of our earlier games without him ie. Seattle). We definitely missed him and Perryman after they both went out with season ending injuries. Maybe there's a way to bring him back on a friendlier deal.

Wasn't he one of the Chargers' better run defenders?

With Miami transitioning again to the 3-4, I wouldn't mind if we kicked the tires.

He got crapped on by a lot of fans because he didn't make splash plays as often as others, but he was the guy that did a lot of the dirty work for the rest of the line on D, and it showed when he went out this past season.  Thing is, with both Bosa and Ingram nearing extension time, and with Liuget coming off a season-ending injury, he was a prime cap-casualty candidate as he just plain didn't merit the amount the team option would have paid him this year.

At the very least, he'll latch on somewhere that's transitioning to a 3-4, as he can play both the 5-Tech and play on the interior in an even front in nickel and dime packages.  The Chargers are even said to be interested in bringing him back, just not at the price tag he was set to earn.  This will make things interesting now, though, given that Darius Philon (who subbed for Liuget both during his suspension and injury) is also a UFA, as is Brandon Mebane.

Not sure I like this move....

He turned himself into a valuable asset for our run defense, and is an all around solid defender. Pretty sure he'll get paid in the open market.

We don't have anyone close to his level ready to step up.

He won't count towards a team comp pick calculation. I expect he will have a pretty strong market.

He wasn't cut, he had a team option declined, so if he signs with a new team before May 11th then he will count towards the determination of compensatory picks.

More digging you are correct.

He does count positively towards the Chargers if he signs.

Hasn’t played a full season the last two years. Really good locker room and off the field guy. Solid but unspectacular when he’s on the field. Wouldn’t mind him back at a third of what he was going to make but 8m for a part time player that has missed large chunks of the last two seasons is too much.
