The Zim-Zam Flim-Flam: All Things Zimmer

Zimmer has won 40 games, two division titles and has taken the team to a NFC title game in his first four seasons. And he’s done that with a revolving door at quarterback, more than his fair share of injuries and some other quirky adversities, such as his eye issue and having to play two seasons of home games in a college stadium.

If the Vikings win the division, again, how many coaches, with the same team, have won a division title with 3 different starting quarterbacks?

A few I suppose...yet it's not an important achievement ever since the Redskins won 3 Super Bowls with 3 different starting quarterbacks (Joe Thiesmann, Doug Williams and Mark Rypien.)

I'm sure Dennis Green did...

1992-93 - Rich Gannon/Sean Salisbury

1994-95 - Warren Moon

1998-99 - Randall Cunningham

2000-01 - Daunte Culpepper

Speaking of crazy....

Coaches' winning percentages
Bud Grant .621 (158-96-5)
Dennis Green .610 (97-62)
Mike Zimmer .609 (39-25)

What's separating him from those two? Is it just longevity? Does Zimmer have to also get the team to Super Bowls in order to be viewed in the same light as Grant? Does he have to win one?

If he wins one, he goes right to the top

Just as I feel with the whole Tarkenton/Cousins debate, it doesn't matter to me whether he wins a Super Bowl or not, Zimmer would not be able to surpass Grant.  He'd certainly shoot ahead of Denny, but he ain't surpassing Bud because longevity does have to play a factor.

Now, let's say Zimmer coaches until he's 70 (8 more years) and he makes 2 Super Bowls, winning 1.  Then, it becomes a good argument, because he'd probably have coached long enough to be in the equation.  But, if he wins 1 in the next 2 years and then retires after 3 more years, then it doesn't matter, because you're talking about 1 coach who only coached 8 years compared to one who coached for 17-18 years.

If Zimmer wins a Super Bowl with the Vikings, he’ll be the best coach in their history.

Bud Grant won a lot of games, but never reached the top of the mountain. The only thing separating him from Green is the 4 trips to the Super Bowl.

Longevity doesn’t hold much weight for me.

There's far more separating Grant and Green than just the 4 Super Bowl appearances.  The gap between Grant and Green in the pantheon of Vikings coaches probably stretches as wide as the Mississippi River is long.  Green's continuous underachievement in continuously losing in the playoffs and his inability to even develop a half-way decent defense as long as he was coach were his biggest failures.  Not to mention his antagonism towards the ownership of the franchise and the fans of the franchise in general.

What was Grant doing in the playoffs? Aren't Super Bowls still a part of the playoffs?

whoa now, let's take a step back here...

Grant built a defense that even today ranks as one of the nest. Green had the sensibility to draft Randy Moss.

He certainly wasn't losing in the first game every year.  It took Denny 6 years to even win a playoff game...and he only won 1/3 of the playoff games he did participate in.  Bud was nearly .500 in the playoffs...and won multiple games 4 times.  Denny never did.  The fact that anyone thinks they are comparable is laugh-out-load funny.
