ramssuperbowl99
Depending on how the deal was structured (e.g. a large signing bonus), this could be a pretty meaningful opt out. Or it could be the kind of thing where he does what Sabathia did and gets an extra year guaranteed.
BrownieTheElf
Opt out after year 5.
Lions017
I love this. It's great to see a small market team sign a superstar - they should be able to put a good team around him in a year or so too.
flyguy1609
good deal for the padres, wonder if they try and make a move for a SP
ramssuperbowl99
Unless this deal is front-loaded by like $30MM, this is a good deal for the Padres. Machado should outproduce that fairly comfortably.

Since baseball players get paid based on where they are during the 6 months of the season, you could spend all offseason in San Diego and not pay any California income tax, then play during the season in some place with a lower tax bracket. And that's what a lot of them do.

That's why CC Sabathia's deal was negotiated so that he'd be paid weekly or bi-weekly. He's not in NY State for half of the season (I don't know where he lives but it's probably got a lower top tax bracket that NY), so he gets paid where he claims residency and saves himself a bundle of cash.
