He was due a $6 million cap hit this coming year.

Sims was placed on injured reserve by the Bears in November after suffering a concussion. He entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick of the Miami Dolphins out of Michigan State back in 2013. In his rookie season, he appeared in 15 games with five starts, catching six passes for 32 yards with one touchdown. The following year he got more involved in the passing game, catching 24 passes for 284 yards with two touchdowns in 14 games with two starts. In 2015 he saw action in 13 games and caught 18 passes for just 127 yards with one touchdown.

When on the field, Sims struggled in the passing game and added very little as a blocker. There was hope he could become an option in the passing game but that never worked out. He was a part of a free agent class in Chicago in 2017 that struggled to produce on the field. Sims was signed during that offseason with the likes of quarterback Mike Glennon, wide receiver Markus Wheaton, safety Quintin Demps, cornerback Marcus Cooper, cornerback Prince Amukamara and wide receiver Kendall Wright. Only Amukamara remained on Chicago's roster in 2018 as a major factor on the team.

Chicago now sits with just two tight ends under contract for the 2019 season. Veteran Zach Miller and Daniel Brown are also set to become free agents this offseason. Ben Braunecker is set to be a restricted free agent.

I honestly can’t think of one memorable thing he did while he was here.

You mean other than falling on Kyle Long's ankle and injuring him again?  >:(

Sims seems to be one of those guy who got his bigger better deal following his rookie contract and simply began mailing it in.  He never progressed as he was projected to so it makes his signing look all that much worse.  Pace and Nagy even gave him another year to improve and he didn't.

While it will go down as a black mark against Pace I don't know that you can always predict with 100% certainty which mid-level FAs you sign will rise to the occasion and which will do little more than receive and cash their paychecks.  We aren't the only team who signed some bozos.

Sims is Pace's 2017 flop and Parkey his 2018 flop but otherwise some mid level guys like Massie and Amukamara have turned out to be solid starters and Hicks is an all star find.  Plus last years receiver crop is looking good and should do much better in 2020 just due to familiarity with Mitch.

I don't like our mistakes any more than anyone else does but when weighed against our scores we're still far ahead or we wouldn't have been 12-4.
