Oakland Renegades

The Oakland Renegades are signing Sammis Reyes, TE Tulane Basketball/International Player Pathway. I am also waiving Anthony Johnson, WR and allotting that money plus 200k to Reyes for a 1y/875,000 deal. If Washington Football Team's offer beats that then I keep Anthony Johnson, if it's multiple years but $875,000 works for year one we will beat WFT's extension and roll with Reyes.

EDIT: IRL He signed a three year deal with the first year being 660,000. My year one beats that so I will sign him, and offer him years 2 and 3 for 1,000,000 flat each, for a 2,875,000 total.

I feel awful to do that to Tua, but Justin Fields was not someone I ever mocked as being available. I am unsure if I want to have them compete, or flip Tua for a pick... but since I wasn't expecting this I'm not sure what the return would be. Does anyone have a rough idea of Tua's trade value?

I'm trading the rights to Justin Fields to the Chicago Bears for the compensation they gave up to go get him at 11.

"The Giants give up pick 11 and the Bears give New York their 20th overall selection and the 164th this year, and a 2022 first-round pick, and a 2022 fourth-round pick." Source - https://www.windycitygridiron.com/2021/4/29/22403246/nfl-draft-results-2021-chicago-bears-trade-up-and-take-justin-fields-ohio-state-new-york-giants

I now have the 20th and 164th picks this year, another 2022 first and 2022 4th. This makes sense to me, but I couldn't pass on Fields at 8, that's stupid.

The one position I wanted to address in the first three rounds that I didn't was CB. I planned on Patrick Sutain at 8 for a long time, but with Justin Fields there that plan went out the window. I still ended up with Darrisaw at 20, who was a player I did experiment taking in the first quiet a bit. For weeks, probably a month or two, I have wanted Alim McNeill, Javonte Williams and Tyson Campbell in the second/second/third grouping I had. When Tyson went 33rd to the Jaguars I secured Javonte, and I would have regardless, but doing so knowing I'm not getting Tyson at 39 was a little different as I knew I was going to alter my plan. I also had chosen Alim was the one I'd risk falling to 66 when Barmore was clearly going to be a second rounder.  I was going to BPA at 39 and take JOK, but the Bears traded up again and that extra 3rd was perfect. I was assuming with moving back to 52 in the second from 39 I'd be able to target Kelvin Joseph and keep the structure of my plan for Tyson Campbell in tact, but he went to the Cowboys and JOK was still on the board at 52 so I took him. Alim and Wyatt are two guys I liked to bolster the interiors and was excited to get both.

Now I'm up next after the Jaguars to open round 4, and I'm thinking Jabril Cox and kick my CB issue down the line (and I still like some CBs on board), Michael Carter is another I like, as is the Marvin Wilson / Daviyon Nixon pairing in case the Jaguars take one I'll be tempted to take the other.

2022 draft picks:
1. Chicago Bears (from Justin Fields trade, IRL NYG holds this pick)
1. Oakland Renegades
2. Carolina Panthers (from trade from #2 overall, IRL CAR holds this pick)
2. Oakland Renegades
3. Oakland Renegades
4. Chicago Bears (from moving down from #39, IRL CAR holds this pick)
4. Oakland Renegades
5. Oakland Renegades
6. Oakland Renegades
7. Oakland Renegades
___________________________

This is my favorite class so far to finish up and how I feel about the group of prospects I landed and my 53 man roster -- like I feel much less expansiony after this draft. I didn't want to address QB and staying at #2, it would have been the pick, so I moved down with a cheap fake trade to go from #2 to #8 picking up a 2nd and a future 2nd (that moves to a first if Carolina advances past the wildcard round). Once I was at 8, I assumed I was going to select Patrick Surtain or Penei Sewell and my fall back if it happened each was off the board was Christian Darrisaw. When 8 came on the clock live, I saw Justin Fields and I just thought that was absolutely stupid and selected him. I considered doing a fake trade of Tua and keeping Fields, but value was going to be hard to mock in trade. Then the Bears moved up to 11 to select Justin Fields and I just accepted that trade, in Eli Manning being drafted by the Chargers style. Now I'm picking at 20, and really the guy I wanted was still going to be Christian Darrisaw. I felt relief once the Chargers took Slater and the Vikings moved down, but still most teams could select a tackle and the Raiders were going to be a threat at 17. When Darrisaw was available at 20 I was ecstatic. For weeks I've wanted Javonte Williams, Tyson Campbell and Alim McNeill with my two seconds and a third (34, 39, 66), but day two opened with the Jaguars surprising me with selecting Tyson Campbell. Javonte was the clear selection to me at 34, probably regardless of if Campbell was on board or not, as I just fell for him and the need at RB was high. When Javonte went 35 on a trade up I felt good about that pick and validated -- it's an awesome scenario too because the Broncos have mirrored me in picking LG Risner, C Cushenberry, and now RB Williams so I can basically watch my fantasy franchise happen in some respects. I got my guy Alim at 66 as planned, and my DC Aaron Glenn is going to be Alim's DC in Detroit! I had planned at 39 to take Jeremiah Owusu Koramoah, but when the Bears moved up I took the same deal. I didn't expect JOK to make it to 52, but I figured with missing on Campbell I could target Kelvin Joseph at 52. Turns out the Cowboys took him and JOK was still on the board, so selected him there. I plan on having JOK play a box safety role. By trading down from 39, I picked up the 83rd pick where I took Wyatt Davis who early on I mocked occasionally to my team in the second round (before I settled on Javonte/Tyson/Alim as my ideal 3), so this addition third gave me the option to get Wyatt, and like my Denver duo on my line I happened to draft two guys the Vikings drafted on the OL LT Darrisaw and RG Wyatt Davis, so I can follow my OL's successes. I went to bed happy with these selections and where my team was headed, but I needed at least one CB and I liked Thomas Graham and Tay Gowan but as I laid in bed with my laptop I wasn't going to pass on Jabril Cox in this situation. I also liked and played with the idea of doubling down on RB and getting Javonte's teammate Michael Carter who also impressed me when I dove deep on Javonte, but my needs at other positions were too great for that -- should I have not signed Jamaal Williams though Carter definately would have been in serious contention.  Heading towards my 5th round pick I was set on taking either Daviyon Nixon or Marvin Wilson, unless one of my CB targets went. Instead Nixon went and I was excited to add the final piece to my DL in Marvin Wilson. I don't care that he went UDFA, the guy deserved to be drafted. What Marvin showed in 2018 and 2019 was a top half draft pick, and then I feel like maybe his tweet in June may have scared teams off given he corrected his coach in regards to George Floyd. That's just speculation, but he also looked less explosive at NT after a scheme change. He'll go back and be a reserve or in competition with Zach Allen and Henry Anderson at 3T though. Then my two 6th round picks approached, and I got both my later CB targets in Thomas Graham and Tay Gowan. Being opt outs I figured the risk for waiting on drafting CB, even when it was a massive team, was better given Tay had limited experience and each opted out so wouldn't be as fresh of evaluations. Finally I got Shaka Toney, and I really liked him. I had him as a 5th round pick in my mock, and I'm excited. I think he will develop into a solid SLB and loved his character in interviews. I don't plan on taking any UDFA, but Jamie Newman is a guy I would have considered drafting, but I'm sticking with Brett Rypien who did as well as you could expect from a 7th rounder in spot starts last year.

I'm torn on if I should waive Cory Littleton (less dead cap than irl since I never restructured him) and sign Casey Heyward with the space made, then rotate JOK to WLB and Lamar Jackson to SS backup to Deshon Elliott.

Little less than 2mil in space.

180516518 / 182500000

I'm not going to do that move though, just considered it. I think the superior path for my team is to stay loyal to the FA I signed last year and just rotate players and move them around based on formations. JOK will still play some WLB or WLB-like roles in the box, and Deshon Elliott will still see SS snaps on more traditional two deep safety looks.

46_bearr.jpg

In like this type of defensive sub-package I think Jeremiah Owusu Koramoah at SS looks great. He's have Nick Bosa at DE in front of him, then Zach Allen or Marvin Wilson, then Alim McNeill or Rashard Lawrence, then AJ Epenesa or Henry Anderson (and Anderson and Zach Allen can flip as well). Then the LBs would be Littleton and Cox (or the LB hugging DE that is Epenesa, could be Yetur and just not care about hiding that we coming downhill fast), with the LB playing an edge or blitzing role would be Shaq Barrett with the #2 option being Shaka Toney.

edit: This sort of formation where I have great coverage linebackers like JOK and Cox (or Littleton) with press corners trying their damnedest to jam and reroute, the time for Bosa/Barrett/Yetur/Epenesa/Alim/Marvin Wilson (or Zach Allen) to beat 5 or 6 blockers should be real fast. The ball has gotta come out and that's why I'm not super scared of my defensive backs not being absolute studs. We should definitely have rush potential on this team.

It's when rotating the SS to more of a two high look that I think I'd want Jeremiah Owusu Koramoah to rotate out for Deshon Elliott, or at least rotate to a LB designated location. These would be more like Tampa 2 or Cover 3 4-3 Under looks. Someone like Desmond King will play nickle and have versatility to rotate to a safety role to make transitioning formation to formation easier. The reason I toy'd with the idea of Casey Heyward would be to add a veteran to the CB ground that has boundary/nickel versatility.

Kevin Pierre Lewis and his immediate reserve Kamu Grugier Hill are special teams studs, but can play the Littleton/Cox role in situations the starters can't be in for. Chase Hansen is the immediate reserve for the JOK role as LB/S. Toney is Barrett's reserve as SLB/LEO/Edge type.

Now in a 3-4 look I think it gets a bit interesting.

2L_8Jm8dWxxBQdnOEu97vQ2n9JO0aZUaUwF1mhV7

This is where I'd have John Johnson and Deshon Elliott as the FS and SS, OLB would be a combination of Bosa/Barrett/Yetur/Toney and ILB would be Littleton/JOK/Cox. The DE would be Zach Allen/Mavin Wilson, Nose Tackle Alim/Rashard, and the smaller DE would be Epenesa/Anderson. Rotating Bosa to a hand in the dirt 9 tech role and it's essentially a 4-3 Under look.

My main concern with my roster as is is OT depth. I am very happy with my starters in Darrisaw and Conklin, and I feel I have a good reserve in Josh Jones, but beyond that I think in emergencies Dalton Risner has to kick out and that'd be problematic in general. I could use one more offensive lineman and someone like Jaylon Moore was what I was looking for that would be a guard that has emergency tackle versatility. 49ers took him before I had a chance though.

Kris Richard

Head Coach

College: USC

Hometown: Los Angeles, CA

Kris Richard enters his third year of leading the expansion Oakland Renegades as Head Coach. He carries 15 years of coaching experience including passing game coordinator and assistant head coach with the Dallas Cowboys immediately prior to hire, and before that 8 years with the Seattle Seahawks including 3 as defensive coordinator. His expertise of developing defensive backs includes Earl Thomas, Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, and Byron Jones who moved on from Dallas under Richard's tutelage into a massive payday with the Dolphins. In real life Kris Richard took a year off after interviewing for some positions in 2020, and enters 2021 as the New Orleans Saints defensive backs coach. Coaching goal for two year extension (current deal is four years, and he is entering his third) is to draft outside the top ten, and a 4 year extension is on the table if we make the playoffs in year three.

sitbj4gtkixmh7xwpxjz.jpg

Marcus Brady

Offensive Coordinator

College: Cal State Northridge

Hometown: San Diego, Calif.

Marcus Brady enters his third year as offensive coordinator for the Oakland Renegades, a job just this year he has been promoted to for the Indianapolis Colts. We hired him after a year as the Colts QB coach, where he expertly navigated the challenge of Andrew Luck's surprising retirement and got Jacoby Brissett up to game speed for the season. His unique path to the NFL as an under sized QB lead him to the CFL as a player, and then later as a coach. His ability to teach the game and communicate in a clam demeanor were traits that greatly appealed to me as a compliment to Kris Richard, who I view as fiery and a goal determined leader. Brady I view as the players coach type, that can work successfully with any staff, and translate the message down to his guys in a way that can appeal to a great number of players. I'm excited to see Brady's adaption of Frank Reich's offense in 2021. I feel like Marcus Brady was the best option when we hired him to lead us with Jacoby Brissett, and his personality is perfect for Tua Tagovailoa as our team has built out. Coaching goal: a two year extension (current deal is four years, and he is entering his third) is offered if Tua, Javonte and the offense improves with the WR assets invested in free agency, a four year extension is on the table if Carson Wentz bounces back in real life as does Tua showing promise that my mock team could find success.

Aaron Glenn

Defensive Coordinator

College: Texas A&M

Hometown: Humble, Texas

Aaron Glenn played 15 years in the league, and then transitioned to scouting and then to coaching. We hired him as New Orleans Defensive Backs coach as an expansion team, and just this year he has also ascended to the role of Defensive Coordinator for the Detroit Lions. This is still Kris Richard's defense, but Aaron Glenn is going to heavily influence it as well. He has been interviewed as a head coaching candidate a couple times since our hire, as well as drawn interest for a few defensive coordinator roles, but was previously blocked by the Saints. We hope to see Jeff Okudah make a leap in real life under Glenn's coaching, just as the Saints had went from one of the leagues worst passing defenses to respectable including a very young All Pro in Marcus Lattimore after hiring Aaron Glenn. Coaching goal a two year extension is on the table if a couple of my defensive backs take a leap to showing pro-ability, a four year extension is on the table if the rest of the defense, if healthy, looks like arguably top 10 unit.

Quarterback Room
Tua Tagovailoa (#13) enters his second year leading the Oakland Renegade's offense and we're ultra-excited for the expected leap. After passing on Kyler Murray with the very first pick in our first draft, we had eyes on Tua for year two. When draft day came around and we were selecting fourth, there was legitimate concern someone would trade up to the Lions pick at #3, leaping the Miami Dolphins and San Diego Chargers. Had we had been leaped, we would have selected Justin Herbert, but Tua was our guy. The defining trait Tua demonstrated that was elite and exactly what we wanted in our young leader was a young man that thought things through, could handle the unimaginable pressure of being the face of the franchise and lead a talented group to wins on the field. His personality is not boisterous or egotistical, and instead comes across as prepared and exacting with a work ethic mentality that is built into the man himself. Tua is a player I felt very comfortable leading my team. Brett Rypien (#4) was our I believe first 7th round pick, and this past season he got some play time and showed himself to be a capable reserve option.

Runningback Room
Defining the running game has taken a few years to complete as a project as it is so heavily tied to the offensive line. The timing was perfect for us to select my favorite RB prospect over the last three years in Javonte Williams (#25). What I wanted from a RB is a college prospect that had low wear and tear, but in his carries quickly identifies his path to success and takes it, and refuses to go down on contact. That is who Javonte is and I was so excited that he was available when I got to select in the second round even when two runningbacks had already been selected. Jamaal Williams (#30) was a player I liked a lot coming out of BYU and like the person as well, I wanted the Raiders to draft him years ago. When he was available in free agency, I selected him with the plan to compliment Javonte, but if we missed out he was a player I was comfortable being my lead back for a year or two. As a complimentary back to a power runner, Jamaal finds himself in a similar role as he found success with in Green Bay with Aaron Jones. Eno Benjamin (#33) was our I believe 6th round pick in 2020, and out of Arizona State he showed a lot of shiftiness that I appreciated as a third running back in the room to compliment what I typically look for, and he fills that role here.

Receiving Room (WR/TE)
I've been happy with my mid to late round receiving options that I have drafted in Quintez Cephus (#87), Donovan Peoples-Jones (#11), and Kelvin Harmon (#83). Our original free agent signing Jamison Crowder (#82) has carried a tremendous load while the unit developed and his health has taken a beating as a result, but when healthy he's been our star. This year we've added two primier boundary options that compliment one another and mimic the younger players drafted to develop behind them. Corey Davis (#84) will be our starting boundary receiver with Kelvin Harmon behind him, and their physicality in the run game blocking and aggressive ability to make contested catches is much appreciated. Will Fuller (#15) is our speed threat, and he will operate opposite Corey Davis and in front of Donovan Peoples-Jones who himself showed some down field burn ability with the Browns last year. Additionally in our Tight End group Eric Ebron (#85) returns for a second year in front of another receving prospect Hunter Bryant (#86) and International Pipeline Prospect Sammis Reyes (#12) who profiles as a Darren Waller type with development. We want our tight ends to catch the ball, chip block, and be able to move to locations on outside zone plays to seal a run lane. All three of our TEs profile as fits for that much more so than statuesque players would.

Offensive Line Group
I am proud of this offensive line, Christian Darrisaw (#77) comes in as our first round pick to anchor the left allowing us to move on from a desperation pay of Trent Brown which was riddled with injuries. We are excited about Darrisaw, especially elite on his ability to close off the backside on zone runs. The consistency gained in our run game should dramatically improve our offense with Darrisaw and Javonte added to the unit. Dalton Risner (#66), our second pick ever, is stationed beside Darrisaw at left guard and Risner has become everything we liked in him as a prospect. He's a natural leader, athletic and tenatious in the trenches and a amazing represenative of the team off the field with work and support with the Special Olympics as an example. Beside Risner is Lloyd Cushenberry (#79) and Scott Quessenberry (#61) who will compete, but we lean towards Lloyd. The center position is difficult to immediate step in and play, and Lloyd Cushenberry struggled a bit year one, but his traits still project well. We are fans of his length and strength combination which can help steer over sized nose tackles out of the center of the defense  to create lanes on inside zone plays, and he has a touch of athelticism to pull if needed on the rare center pull plays. Scott is one of the few expansion draft players remaining on the team, and we're happy with his steady above average play in spot starts and his versatility to play along the interior for depth. At right guard we have rookie Wyatt Davis (#52) whose grandfather is a HOFer, but he himself demonstrated high level play in 2019 at The Ohio State. In 2020 there are some plays where communication seemed to be a potential issue where passing guys off was an issue, but that was new and potentially just a personnel change thing. We look forward to him taking that leap many expected him to take in 2020 that could have propelled him to late first round, but in the pros. Behind Davis is last years mid/late round pick Ben Bredeson (#67) who is a heady player with brute strength that still needs to develop a bit more, but limited mobility. Ben Bredeson was a starter last year, but this year moves to a reserve role as we emphasize the zone run game. Bredeson however is not on his way out or anything like that with the scheme change, just he needs to work on flexibility and athleticism to try and compete for his spot again, instead of developing on becoming purely a hammer on the right side. Capping off the line is Jack Conklin (#78) who mans the right tackle position and does so at an elite level, and developing behind him is second year third round pick Josh Jones (#74) who was raw coming out, but with elite upside.

I've talked about my defense quite a bit in previous posts so I'll just list their jersey numbers as that's the only new information:

This video came out a couple days ago and I really enjoyed it, I haven't finished but the bit he opens with Single High Safeties to Staley "turning it on it's head" and now the Rams last year had two high safeties... that then drop in from depth to support the run game. That's the sort of role and evolution I planned to use JOK in as this LB/S hybrid. The Tite alignment up front he mentioned is more or less a reason for the depth along the line I've built, investments in players like Alim McNeill, who played the 0 tech in NC State frequently, slide in with Rashard Lawrence to play that role, while the B gap defenders would come from the pool of players like AJ Epenesa, Henry Anderson, Zach Allen and maybe Marvin Wilson on some snaps that need a larger body type. Nick Bosa should be an easy port to see how Staley introduces Joey Bosa to the scheme and Shaq Barrett will feast with that LB stunt role, whereas Littleton and Cox have had success in coverage roles. I like how this, to me, looks like a clean blend to mask some 4-3 Under looks and confuse offenses while stunting the quick pass game that targets the single high. I like how this innovation looks to be a clean port where my roster has nice fits for each schemes roles and can adopt this style as part of the playbook.

Oakland Renegades sign #22 Steven Nelson, CB (IRL to Eagles 1y/4mil) to a 1y/5mil deal.  Oakland Renegades are waiving Chase Hansen, LB and giving Jamison Crowder a paycut to $7,500,000 from $11,500,000, IRL Crowder took a paycut to $5,500,000 with the NYJ.

Lamar Jackson (Nebraska) will enter training camp as a SS, and Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah a WLB, in addition to Cory Littleton moving to MLB and changing his number to #42.
