mse326
the hate for Clowney in here is unreal. Is he always 100%? No. Does he disappear? Sure. But he still is dominant force in the run and pass game. There really aren't many that are better than him. And especially when our pass rush outside him in Watt was non-existent now you want to get rid of him? We have too many holes as it is. There is zero reason to create another.

He doesn’t generate a pass rush on 65% of the plays he’s on. He is a low motor guy who has no heart and drive. Give the guy 18 million a year and expect those issues to go away? Clowney is only gonna get worse when he signs that deal having said that, we obviously have no plans to spend that money and Clowney is good enough that we can go get a replacement so just pay the man already and front load the heck out of it before we have to pay Watson in 2 years

That’s pretty unfair clowney is best suited for the role Watt plays. But we can’t have two of the same roaming type players on the field. Clowney excels at his role.
ET80
I'm actually pro-Clowney, but - given the going contracts for Frank Clark and DeMarcus Lawrence - I hope that we trade him. It'll be a hit to our defense, but that sort of money is troublesome for a guy with Clowney's injury history.

We also have to recognize his was much better when playing DE rather than OLB. Why our coaches don't realize that or utilize that only god knows. Even if he doesn't roam playing him at the other DE spot and getting another OLB. That is why I want to get BBK in the 2nd. Kick Clowney down to DE. Allow Mercilus to be rushing the passer 95+% so hopefully he gets his groove back.

You can’t possibly watch him play and believe he goes all out even 50% of the time. He might be the most physically gifted guy in the league but his lack of heart and fire keeps him from being DPOY
tab
i legitimately had a nightmare last night that Clowney had been traded to the Titans for some linebacker and a pick and it was like.. some horrific gameshow setting and Clowney was in a chair that mechanically moved him over to the Titans area. He was doing that thing where he was saying he was excited to get to work and i was just imagining having to play against him twice every single year from now on absolute nightmare edit: but possible with this FO i think Edited May 16, 2019 by tab
Texans02
It's not that Clowney is a bad player, it's that I don't believe we can sign him to a deal that matches his value to the team. Part of the problem is that the market for pass rushers has been high this off-season, giving him a lot of leverage. I also believe he and his agent view him as elite or close to it when he's not. Pardon the baseball-speak, but he's a 3 WAR guy that thinks he's an 8 WAR guy. An above average starter/marginal Pro Bowler (NOT All-Pro) that thinks he's an MVP/DPOY, basically. Between the inflated market and Clowney's inflated self-valuation, there's not going to be a contract agreement that makes sense for the value he provides. Factor in his difficult injury history (partially our team's fault for crappy turf) and the perception that he plays hot and cold, and I think we should have tagged and traded him. I'm pretty sure we've missed the boat on that opportunity this year since the draft already happened. Even if he has a monster year, I still favor trading him or letting him walk. I find it unlikely he will keep outperforming his current level, and he would command an even bigger contract if he has a career year. The only scenario I see for resigning him is if he underperforms and we believe we have inside information that it was a fluke, allowing us to sign him for something closer to his realistic value. Paying someone a big premium to be "good enough" is how cap hell starts. Especially when good enough is playing on bad knees. EDIT: before someone comes in to "well, actually" me, he did get selected All-Pro in 2016 by PFWA & SN, but not the AP team. That said, I still believe his value on the field, especially his forward-looking value in the years he would be under monster contract, is more modest than All-Pro. Raider fan here who always thought Clowney fit our system better even thought he doesn't play to 'what could be' We have our 1st and 3rd and we had the Bears 1st and 3rd. I'm not happy after the draft and think Ferrell/Crosby will not be 'enough' and think Chucky might be wiling to deal. If I'm Mayock I'd offer the Bears 1st/3rd, or Bears 1st our 3rd maybe even our 1st and 3rd for Clown boy. With a contract that has escalators to make him highest paid if he reaches indy and team incentives. 18/20 mil for 50% effort expected from reading the earlier posts. 22/24 if all pro and beats out Mack in pro bowl and 25 per season if AFC champ game reached. This would 'hopefully' inspire him to give his all and take it to another level. I'm worried about the Raiders pass rush and know 'Pass rushers are hard to find' so admit a mistake and compensate and move on IMO... So would you accept these offers? Lets talk. Money
You'd have to think an Army Ranger at left tackle would go over well in the locker room and be beloved by Texans fans. Not too mention being All-Pro. Alejandro Villanueva, Bud Dupree, and a Steelers 4th rd pick for Jadeveon Clowney and Brandon Dunn

I'd be happier with a 3rd, as a "cost of business" deal to move him inside the AFC. Dupree would be an adequate body in the front seven, perhaps he'd turn that corner he was supposed to turn in Pittsburgh. Wouldn't say no, which is more than what I can say about most offers people have hypothesized about so far.
ET80
On this note - apparently, that Miami deal that Clowney shot down? It was to include LT Larmey Tunsil. I know he's got a few questions on his character (that whole gas mask situation that came out the night before the draft in 2016) but a young LT who is turning into a great pass protector? I'd probably say yes to that. Would need to hear more on the deal... but I'd probably say yes to that.
amazingandre
Training Camp is half over, I wouldn't trade him at this point
