NYJ One Year Challenge (Madden 18)

Recommended Posts

The Jets are clearly the worst team (on paper) in Madden this year.  I like drafting and building, and I like a challenge, so I decided to throw this idea out there: a number of us see how well we can do playing one All Madden season with the NYJ.  Not this season, though... 2018.

How it'll work: each player simulates the 2017 season and takes control of the Jets for 2018.  All trades are allowed.  We can post here with roster moves, free agent signings, draft results, game outcomes, etc.

Rules/details:

All Madden - Simulation (base sliders)

"Use Preseason Rosters"

"Regular Season" starting point

Injuries OFF

Trade deadline ON

Trade type "Enable All"

Salary cap ON

9 minute quarters

Accelerated clock ON - 20 seconds

Cannot set/change 2017 schedule outcomes

Cannot modify the default 2017 depth chart

Cannot simulate during games

Cannot modify performance/penalty sliders

CAN modify player EXP sliders

CAN relocate the Jets elsewhere

I picture this as being a casual exercise... no set schedule or pressure to play games.  I'll probably start mine up soon after posting, and anyone can jump in and post with their own info whenever they'd like.

I look forward to seeing what the Madden players can do.

A lot of work to do.  On offense, I'm going to have to find a QB that has a decent enough arm and accuracy to win games on All Madden.  My RBs are pretty good, but RBs are easy to replace.  Might trade both Forte and Powell and just draft a replacement.  I need a playmaking WR, I figure my best chance to land one will be in FA.  My TEs aren't great but they aren't awful.  Oline needs a lot of work.  Will probably have to address both in FA and the draft.

The defense has guys up front and that's it.  The fact that the CPU has Richardson at ROLB is just dumb.  I'm going to move him back to the line.  Also, I'm going to switch to the 4-3 so I can utiliize Richardson, Wilkerson and Williams at the same time.  I'll probably move Darron Lee to LOLB to play a coverage LBer role in the 4-3.  The secondary is set at safety with the two rookies, but CB needs a ton of work, and CB is probably the hardest position to upgrade.

*OVRs are going to look a little different because I changed my coach schemes to 4-3.

Position Changes

Sheldon Richardson – ROLB (84) to LE (86)

Leonard Williams – LE (86) to DT (89)

Muhammad Wilkerson – RE (79) to DT (85)

Lorenzo Mauldin IV – ROLB (74) to RE (74)

Darron Lee – MLB (74) to LOLB (75)

Trades

QB Josh McCown (74), HB Bilal Powell (82) to the Broncos for 1st Round Pick

-          Probably robbing the Broncos here, but they get a vet QB, a decent RB and I get a seriously needed first.

HB M Forte (86), DT Steve McLendon (77), 5th Round Pick to the Redskins for 1st Round Pick

-          Redskins lack a starting RB and NT, this fills both needs while giving me their first.  This has a chance to end up in the top 10 if things go south for the Skins.

QB Bryce Petty (71), CB Darry Roberts (69), 7th Round Pick to the Saints for CB PJ Williams (76)

-          Dumping Petty and the worthless Roberts for Williams, who’s got pretty good athleticism but needs to have his AWR upgraded.

DL Devon Still (75), RG A Balducci (66) traded to the Cardinals for 3rd Round Pick

-          Another draft pick added.

Free Agent Signings

FS Marcus Williams (76) – Stole off Saints P.S.  Will likely start at FS over Maye.

DT Caleb Brantley (75) – Browns put him on their practice squad and I stole him.

RB Denard Robinson (76) – Decent SPD guy.

RE Daeshon Hall (73) – Speed edge rusher.  Stole off Panthers P.S.

ROLB Christian Jones (78) – Signed to be starting OLB.

QB Colin Kaepernick (74) – Gives me an option at QB if I can’t get anyone else.

TE Nick Boyle (76) – Blocking TE to compliment ASJ.

RB Chris Thompson (79) – Lol feel kind of bad about this one, Skins cut Thompson after I traded them Forte, so I scooped him up.  He’s a good pass catcher with SPD.

WR Damiere Byrd (60) – Really fast, added for KR.

Cuts

WR Kenbrell Thompkins (69) – didn’t need him.

I cut their crappy FB, don’t even remember his name.  I’ll be carrying 4 TEs and play one at FB.

Total Draft Picks

1st Round Pick – Jets

1st Round Pick – Redskins

1st Round Pick – Broncos

2nd Round Pick – Jets

3rd Round Pick – Jets

3rd Round Pick – Cardinals

4th Round Pick – Jets

5th Round Pick – Cowboys

6th Round Pick - Jets

Simming Year 1

Week 1

L 35-17 @ Bills

0-1   Record

I’m starting Hackenberg at QB to try to force the tank this season.  Need that high pick.

Week 2

L 38-15 @ Raiders

0-2   Record

The Vikings have contacted me about Teddy Bridgewater (remember pre-existing injuries were off).  I will monitor this situation, might be a good option for me.  Scouting starts this week.  I resigned LE Sheldon Richardson to a 4-year $31.5 mil deal.  I also resigned WR Quincy Enunwa to a 3-year $15.1 mil deal.

Week 3

L 28-3 vs. Dolpins

0-3   Record

Draft story says SS Benton Staley will be a beast in the NFL.  Too bad I don’t need safeties.  Resigned CB Mo Claiborne to a 4-year $22.9 mil deal.

Week 4

L 38-14 vs. Jaguars

0-4   Record

Draft story is about WR KC Madu breaking school record for receiving yards.  Will have to monitor him.  I desperately need a playmaker at WR.

Week 5

L 38-15 @ Raiders

0-5   Record

My tank game is strong, lost to the 0-4 Browns.  My starting Center Wesley Johnson got injured and is out 7 weeks.  He’s pretty terrible and my backup has the same OVR, I’m going to IR him so I can stash someone else on my roster.  Signed ROLB Matthew Judon (74), converted to RE (77).  Signed MLB Demario Davis to a 3-year $8.43 deal. That’s not a ton of money and worst case he’ll  be a solid backup next year.  Resigned TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins to a 3-year $13.8 mil deal.  I have too many needs to fix them all and ASJ is serviceable.

Week 6

L 27-10 vs. Patriots

0-6   Record

Draft news, RE Angel Stewart has gotten a sack in 5 straight games.

Week 7

L 23-13 @ Dolphins

0-7   Record

WR Quincy Enunwa has torn his quad and is out 7 weeks.  I’m going to IR him just to keep the tank strong.  Signed CB Tay Glover-Wright (68), fast and 80 man coverage rating.  Draft news says QB Giovanni McMillan should be the top QB selected.  He’s a solid prospect, not a huge arm though.

Week 8

L 31-9 vs. Falcons

0-8   Record

Simming all of the games is killing my progression, neither my players or coach are earning xp points.  Btw I’m not playing the weekly training either.  I heard if you select the training you’ve gotten gold on (I did the first week) it would sim you the xp, but that doesn’t appear to be happening.

Week 9

L 32-25 vs. Bills

0-9   Record

Nothing happened this week of note.

Week 10

L 21-17 @ Buccaneers

0-10 Record

Another slow week.  Bye week.

Week 11

Bye Week.

0-10           Record

Draft news, apparently RB Casey Fuller is not very good, and OC Webster had a major ankle injury.

Week 12

L 38-0 vs. Panthers

0-11           Record

Nothing this week.

Week 13

L 45-10 vs. Chiefs

0-12           Record

Draft news, MLB Raysean Sawyer set a record for TFL for Texas.

Week 14

L 41-10 @ Broncos

0-13           Record

Draft news, RE Malcolm Roberson had 2 sacks in a big game and is apparently good.  HB Rayneil Howard won the Heisman Trophy.  K Chandler Catanzaro was resigned to a 3-year $5.37 mil deal.

Week 15

L 38-35 @ Saints

0-14           Record

Nothing newsworthy.

Week 16

L 42-21 @ Raiders

0-15           Record

One loss away from the perfect tank.  Actually I thought I was in jeopardy of screwing up my tank job by signing those FAs.  Guess I underestimated how bad Hackenberg is.

Week 17

L 31-10 @ Patriots

0-16           Record

The perfect tank!  #1 pick!  Woot.

Offseason

Resigning Period

HB Chris Thompson (79) signed 2-year $6 mil extension.

RE Matthew Judon (80) signed 3-year $16 mil extension.

Free Agency

Signed WR Larry Fitzgerald (90) to 2-year $22 mil deal.

Signed CB Brent Grimes (87) to 1-year $10.5 mil deal.

Signed ROLB Shaquil Barrett (84) to 5-year $40 mil deal.

Signed OC John Sullivan (82) to 2-year $7.02 mil deal.

Signed CB Adam Jones (79) to 1-year $5.73 mil deal.

NFL Draft

I either have to draft a QB, or trade for one after the draft.  Since this is only a 2 year mission, I look at all of next year’s draft picks as expendable.  So I can trade them all to make moves for this year.  I’m going to see if I can make a move for a QB before the draft so I know whether or not I need to take one #1 overall.

The best two options are Patrick Mahomes or Blake Bortles.  Both are stuck behind another starter (Jags signed Teddy Bridgewater in FA).  The difference is that Mahomes is on a way cheaper contract, and I just blew most of my money in FA.

*Trade*

2019 1st & 3rd Round Picks, 2018 4th Round Pick for QB Patrick Mahomes (80)

Steep price but 2019 doesn’t mean anything in this challenge.  Now I can do something else with the #1 overall pick.

*TRADE OFFER*

Browns have offered #3, #13 and a 3rd round pick for #1 overall.  I think I’m going to take the deal.

The Browns take QB J Rhodes, he’s IMO obviously the best QB in the class.  The 49ers take LOLB R Manley, I wasn’t targeting either so trade down worked out great for me.

#3 overall pick

RE Angel Stewart 6’5” 287 lb (80 OVR) Quick Development

77 SPD, 86 ACC, 86 STR, 84 PMV, 66 FMV, 87 BSH

- Pretty good pass rushing prospect.  I wish his finesse moves were better, but with good strength he seems more like a bull rusher.  Good size too.  He'll start at RE for me.

#5 overall pick

MLB Raysean Sawyer 6’0” 236 lbs (79 OVR) Quick Development

86 SPD, 90 ACC, 88 TAK, 89 POW, 84 PUR, 73 ZCV

- MLB wasn't a huge need but Sawyer seemed like one of the top players in this draft and boy he didn't disappoint.  He's stupid fast for a LBer, hits hard and is decent in coverage.  He'll start at MLB for me.

#10 overall pick

HB Rayneil Howard 6’0” 209 lbs (79 OVR) Superstar Development

93 SPD, 89 ACC, 93 AGI, 90 CAR, 91 ELU, 58 TRK

- I was hoping Howard would be faster than this since he's a speed back not a power back.  I'm not sure he's that much of an upgrade over Chris Thompson.  With Superstar development he'd be a good prospect in a normal league but I need big impact Year 1.  I feel like I made a mistake drafting this guy.

#12 overall pick

WR K.C. Madu 5’11” 179 lbs (80 OVR) Quick Development

96 SPD, 94 ACC, 93 AGI, 89 CTH, 81 CIT, 82 SPC, 83 RTE, 78 RLS

- Now this is more like it!  Madu should be an impact player right away as my best deep threat.  I don't know why he wasn't drafted higher, I probably should have selected him earlier.  I really excited he dropped.  He'll be my #2 WR this year.

#33 overall pick

RT Heath Wood 6’7” 323 lbs (73 OVR) Normal Development

79 STR, 75 PBK, 82 RBK, 90 IBL

- There were too really good Guards I was hoping would be here at the top of the 2nd, but the CPU stole them from me.  Wood's strength rating is pretty disappointing but his blocking is decent.  He'd be a decent prospect in a normal league, but he'll likely be a backup this year.  I'll probably make him backup at LT.

#65 overall pick

TE Dalton Withrow 6’3” 260 lbs (76 OVR) Normal Development

82 SPD, 84 ACC, 80 STR, 69 CTH, 79 RBK, 74 IBL

- I wasn't targeting a TE, but Withrow was rated as a 2nd round prospect and I got him here in the 3rd.  He's a huge upgrade as a run blocker over ASJ, and just as fast.  His catch rating needs some work but I think that'll bump up over the season.  He might start for me to help my run game.

#67 overall pick

RT Cory Hicks 6’6” 308 lbs (73 OVR) Normal Development

82 STR, 74 PBK, 78 RBK, 81 IBL

- Another backup Oline.

#80 overall pick

ROLB Ray Klein 6’3” 236 lbs (76 OVR) Quick Development

82 SPD, 90 ACC, 75 TAK, 88 POW, 82 PUR, 79 ZCV

- I was just looking for a backup LBer, but Klein's a pretty awesome prospect at this point in the draft.  He might start over Darron Lee.

#154 overall pick

LG Lawrence Rasmussen 6’5” 334 lbs (71 OVR) Normal Development

81 STR, 74 PBK, 81 RBK, 90 IBL

- Good run blocking Guard prospect.

#161 overall pick

RE Dixon Daniel 6’2” 243 lbs (72 OVR) Quick Development

83 SPD, 85 ACC, 80 STR, 74 PMV, 88 FMV, 69 BSH

- Really good speed rushing prospect this late.  Will backup at RE.

I feel like this was a really good draft.  But Idk if itll be enough this year.  I didn’t upgrade my Oline enough in the offseason and I think it’ll hurt me.  I prioritized the defense because I feel its really important to have a good defense on All Madden.
