the lone star
Should More Teams Begin Using 4 WR Sets More Often And Pull The Tight End Off The Field?
Forge
Depends on your tight end. Guys like Kittle and Kelce prevent much bigger match up problems for defenses than your typical 4th receiver....
Kiltman
Only if you don't have a weapon at TE...you look at a team like the Eagles they need to do the reverse and go more 12 personnel. Goedert and Ertz are too good to keep off the field.
nextsuperstar1
In modern football many teams have tightends who are better than their 3rd WR, never mind fourth WR. The Patriots best receivers since Randy Moss left have been tightends.
Dome
Depends on your TE and what the defense is giving you
RuskieTitan
Wide receivers typically aren't anywhere near as good of blockers as tight ends, so you are tipping your hand to it being a pass play more likely with a 4th WR instead of TE.

This. Four wide sets shrink the playbook. 11 and 21 personnel are far more flexible. Also, what others have said. Tight ends can be matchup problems because of the usual base defense that has them matched up on a linebacker or a safety.

Eagles and Colts have 2 big threats at TE in Ertz/Goedert and Ebron/Doyle They absolutely should not be running more 4 WR sets
N4L
absolutely not. The reason the best schemers all like to have TEs (minus mcvay) is because it gives you versatility on any given play. TEs are usually better blockers than everyone but the OL so having guys who can both catch and block gives you a schematic advantage because you wont tip your hand run/pass

ET80
There was a time in the 90s when 4WR sets were all the rage. Houston Oilers and Atlanta had the Run and Shoot, Detroit had the Silver Stretch, Buffalo had the K-Gun...
DoleINGout
This question is valid but I'd like to point out the Patriots got to the Super Bowl and won on their physical offense starting with their tighr ends, offensive line and running backs. Kiwibrown
I like 3 wr set with te split wide on the otherside Messes with the defense.
scar988
No. The 11 personnel look is good. If anything, teams should use more 12 personnel and force an additional LB or S onto the field for speed reasons.

Since the rules are so tame now, it's easier to toss the rock around. I've always liked when teams run out of shotgun and feel like since the defense is antipicating the pass, it opens up the run game. But it's going to very scheme / personnel based. If you have a weapon at TE, he's likely more valuable than your 4WR. Unless you had a burner or something comparable in the wings. But a team like the Bills or the Cardinals? You might as well sling it 4WR, imo.
