Fellas, who has been the gold standard since the 2000s?

The Pats.

See what they do each year?

They sign guys for not too much $. The ones that are gonna break the bank they let walk. Then they pocket the comp picks for them.

Right now, they have 2x 3rd rounders and a 6th.

This is how they keep the cupboard stocked and also allows them to move up to grab a guy if they need to.

And they pick up reclamation projects.
And trade for guys on expiring contracts to double their chances in the FA market.

Since the safeties are inflated this FA, hopefully Ha Ha signs a contract with AAV of around $12m. That gives us a 3rd.

That would be nice ... but I don't think we're that lucky.

Bingo!

It's not hard to play this game guys. You just need discipline to do it.

And decent talent evaluation.
And a long term plan.
And competent people to do both.

... which unfortunately is not the case in Washington.

The Pats have a QB.

I would prefer there be no market for him and he resigns with us for something reasonable.

Yes, but they've also drafted QBs ... and let them walk/traded them for assets.

Any sensible GM knows that if you have a capable QB in house, you do whatever you can to keep that player in house as long as possible.

True. But that has nothing to do with HOW they go about building the entire roster. They have been doing this every year. And no small wonder why they always seem to have great depth.

I mean, they are the gold standard. In a copycat league, why not copy this?

Ah sensible GM.  We don’t have one of those either.

The only thing Belichick is bad at is developing a coaching tree.
