Something that seemed to have been missed in here is that the guaranteed money in Bell's contract was incorrectly reported at $33M+. He is actually getting $25M guaranteed total for his contract. I think that wraps it up. Bell missed out on a lot of money. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-york-jets/leveon-bell-12329/

He's getting more than Gurley at signing, that's all I know.

The Jets offer being $26MM guaranteed versus $35MM guaranteed changes the math somewhat substantially. Sitting out a year to get an extra $18MM or so guaranteed is justifiable. Less risk and you lower the ceiling of your max earnings, but to each his own.

This is now for an extra $7MM or so guaranteed on his Steeler extension. That's a lot of potential earnings loss for very little security. Yeesh.

Wouldn't the signing bonus be NJ (I'm assuming instead of NY) though?

I believe bonuses are paid off residency. But someone can correct me if I’m wrong.

Tried to find something as I’m not an expert and our tax code can be complicated.

I can’t really defend his decision as it didn’t pay off. He did grow up a Jets fan. We are all fans and can probably imagine how it would feel to play for your childhood team even if they’ve been a struggling franchise.

He’ll pay taxes on the signing bonus based on both. Where I do business I deal with a lot of dual state situations like this and both states will want their share, where he lives and where he works. For me we have people that live in Nevada but work in California and they have to pay California taxes.

I believe he also claimed to be a lifelong Steelers fan previously and also said (last year maybe) that he wouldn't play for the Jets even for $100M. It is 100% him trying to save face on a poor decision.
