I know many of these areas of need will be addressed in the upcoming days. That's a given.

Interestingly (to me), really reviewing the roster while having the draft talent pool in mind, as well as our current draft capital and the available Free Agents has changed a few things in my mind regarding what are our positions of need currently.

Coming into Free Agency, I had upgrading the Interior DL, the Exterior DL, and getting an impact pass catcher as our top 3 critical needs to address. CBs and OL followed closely. Post-Free Agency things have changed drastically imo.

The biggest thing being that relative to our other needs, I don't see Defensive Line as an area of need at all. Players like Trevon Coley, Genard Avery, Carl Davis, Anthony Zettel, Devaroe Lawrence, Chad Thomas will be sufficient this year to hold the two-deep down along the entirety of the DLine. Wilks rolls in DLineman and players like Carl Davis all the way to Chad Thomas (I know everyone has given up on him; He was an injured rookie; watch his college film; he's a real football player) will be enough in my mind as we have more pressing needs.

We're also good enough at WR if Derrick WIllies can stay healthy and Jaelen Strong can return to possession combat catcher form. Strong could very well be a critical signing. Had we retained Perriman, we'd be in a really fantastic place with that positional group.

I still believe in Best Player Available as a draft strategy, but when the grades are close on players, you got to go the way of the need every single time.

After reviewing the roster in depth, I believe our most critical areas to address are as follows:

1.) CB

2. ) Play-making LB

3.) Play-making Versatile Safety/Nickel DB

4.) Versatile Interior OL

5.) LT/RT

Draft-wise, in round 2 and 3 the best players available are likely going to be OTs/OGs and CBs (early to mid round 2). Unfortunately for us, there is good depth at FS in this draft pool that is likely available in the 3rd. There is also not an impact LB worth taking in 2nd or 3rd if they are available imo (not Mack WIlson; not Germaine Pratt... mid and late round LB prospects will yield similar value). At Safety, there are really only two players in this draft class that serve the SS/Versatile Play-making Safety/Nickel Impact player role at a high level and they are Jonathan Abram, S Miss St. and Amani Hooker, S Iowa.

Abram exclusively played the  "Star" Safety/Nickel LB/Box Safety role at Miss. St. He has a smaller body type and frame that might not hold up well at the next level, but has great traits and tools. He's does not range well in pass defense. He'll likely go early to mid 2nd despite mocks having him go in the 1st as he's was neither a captain nor was he voted on the  Leadership Council at Miss. St. for a variety of reasons that may have the ultra talented player slip in the 2nd round.

Amani Hooker is a well-rounded player that could serve our needs at that role with developmental upside. He doesn't play with the physical presence you'd want out of a SS, but he played exclusively as a versatile SS used as a Nickel LB and box defender. He has higher upside as a pass defender and is a fluid athlete. He'll likely be available in the 4th round.

If we take a needs based approach in the draft (assuming players at positions of need are similarly graded to the BPA), I think the board falls such that at the top of the 2nd to our pick we'll be able to get an impact OG or upside OT (Chuma Edoga, Tytus Howard, Dalton Risner, Oli Udoh) OR Jonathan Abram OR one of the slow 40 yard dash/lesser regarded for some reason CBs (Joejuan Williams, Amani Oruwariye, Byron Murphy)

That's the direction we should probably go draft-wise given the best available talent (assuming Jerry Tillery or Jeffery Simmons are off the board).

Trade Ogbah and/or Duke (I still love Duke but it looks like he gone) for a play-making LB or OLineman if possible.

When it comes to WR, sign Chris Conley to a 1 year deal. He is a vertical threat and likely jump Callaway in snaps and would be a nice boundary WR pairing with OBJ... Jarvis working the slot.

I believe Eric Berry is washed. Having played only 2 games or less in each of the last 2 seasons, his movement skills have fallen off a cliff and he's a liability in the passing game with limited impact in the run. He gave his all to the game and was an even better person, but he's not the player we need at S right now.

1. Ss/db I'd address this through fa with our extra millions on a 1 year deal. The best ss availbe, with a focus on coverage, not box play.

2. Corners drop like flies, we need another boundary player. Or two.

3. Dline depth. Chad Thomas will play de tightly or wrongly. Dorsey seems to have a bit of a nepotistic vibe. I'd like another dt.

4. Interior oline to take over from j  next year, solid centers are found throughout the draft.

Ps

It wouldnt surprise me if njoku is on the trading block. Its.my bad Dorsey vibe.

For me personally, we need d-line depth and secondary depth really bad. A #2 CB or a #3 pass rusher is the biggest need to me. I think Kindred can hold the fort down at SS. He’s starting material to me. Genard Avery is a starting caliber SAM to me.

However, everything changes if the staff views Avery as a pass rusher more than a LB. He would be that #3 DE and we would need a starting SAM LB. This is what I want personally.

For me all the need positions are fairly close as we’re essentially talking about depth players.  Perhaps we draft a SS to start, but something tells me Dorsey will have a vet option in place before the draft.

Offensively our only “need” is depth on the OL and maybe a TE.

Defensively I think we have a bit more issues with depth. I think we need someone at DT, especially with the talent in this class.  Linebacker could use a boost as well.  Another round 5 gem like Avery would be fantastic.

Our backfield is a bit sketchier.  Ward and Randall are nice, and Mitchell played well last year, but that’s about it.  We have no depth at all.

We need back seven defense. As much as we can talk TE, OL depth, I’m not the least bit concerned with our chances of moving the ball and scoring. With the depth needed at the position, CB is a good place to start. Unfortunately, this draft is a bad place to look for a plus starter at CB where we sit. If Ward misses some time this year, we are truly in trouble in coverage.

Y’all thinking Avery is going to be starting need to review whatever the hell the guys name we just signed’s contract.

We aren’t paying 7.5 a year for a backup Lb.  Unless Kirksey or Schobert is getting dealt, Avery is the depth.

Huh?

Its 2years 5 million
