Is it? What should he get? Why? Serious questions.

He'd have easily gotten $40M AAV on the open market. Probably a 500-550/12 year deal.

He's having, so far, the greatest start to a career in league history. And nothing signifies that he's going to fall off before he outpaces any potential deal.

The fact that he'd be coming into FA right before the strike year probably motivated this deal as much as anything. Get the security now instead of having to deal with an ownership group 100% intent on dropping player salaries to improve the initial negotiating position.

Not sure he would've gotten the 12 years. Seems like teams want to go higher AAV on shorter term, or longer term with lower AAV. They're reluctant to cave on both, but who knows with Trout. He kind of a different case than all others...

If he hit the market I could've seen him getting 10 years, $450-475 million

100%, I know for a fact that the PA was pushing him to go to FA but he didn't want to gamble and just took the money.

Mookie Betts HAS to hit the market now, though.

Whoa there...  he’s good but he’s not John Wall...
