I think our offer was on the more conservative side, but reasonable. However, Baltimore was desperate and thus more willing to pay a higher salary. That being said, the approach to a free agent is different than working out a trade with another team. Free agency all but sets the market rate for you, where trades don’t always do that. But 2 things on that: 1) When signing a player, the best outcome is one where both parties are happy and feel like they’ve been treated fairly. After all, they are going to have to work together for the next 5 years. With the Dolphins, who really cares? Getting him for as little as possible should be the goal. 2) You risk having the other party walk away, which is not ideal if you really want to make a deal.
