OLB/Edge Class Thoughts

Perhaps you could move TJ Watt to the middle in sub to cover TE's [former TE] and use his length and agility on blitzes. His agility is what plays from the right side, not some burst or acceleration. Agility plays for a LB scraping around. As for Davis, this guy is down in the gutter in terms of rankings, and I see a productive pro with All-Pro type potential.

Gimme Burns in the 1st. Davis in the 6th. Bud Dupree will quit the game.

Gary's future in the NFL is a 3-tech DT.  He will be great there.

You can put in Burns but he will be gone as well.

Here is a pretty good article to chew on.  It breaks down strength and weaknesses for the top 9 EDGE players

https://thedraftnetwork.com/articles/ledyard--2019-nfl-draft-edge-defender-rankings

I'll cut to the bottom:

Rashan Gary is a 3-4 PROTOTYPE DE.

Whereas,

I also consider Anthony Nelson DE Iowa a PROTOTYPE 3-4 DE.

Here's why,

Gary and Burns around the edge is illegal

You can't possibly stop it

Sorry for the poetic format

Also: Rashan Gary DE, Ed Oliver NT ... is the beginnings of a prototype 3-4 defense. Raiders got a shot. Devin White roaming the middle. Burns as the EDGE. Just play with 7.

You really do not watch film do you?  Gary can't turn the edge.  He struggles with lateral movement.  He has phone booth quickness.  He would be fine as a 5-tech but a real waste of his talent.  He does not have the bend or the explosiveness to be a 7-tech.  3 tech is where he will be great.  A place where he can attack vertically.

Zach Allen is the Steeler, prototypical DE.  6'5 300 lbs

I love Bosa, Allen and Burns.
Josh Allen is the perfect pick for us, but of course he's gone top five.
I like Ferrell too. I think he's an all round player.
I think C.MIller could be a player with his best in front of him.
D.Walker is a bit undersized, but again, depends on how you use him.
I think B.Banogu is getting picked apart because of his lack of bend, but think he'll be a player too.
Same with O.Ximines, but he's even less athletic, more of a pure rusher.

Some later round dudes, S.Miller from Penn State is solid, but not spectacular.
The kid out of Akron mentioned above is meant to be a player, but I haven't watched him.
The two Oregon kids may have their best years in front of them Jelks and Miller.
They're both very good athletes for their size.

I think that Ferrell looked great last year, but not as good this year.  He looked stiffer or something to me.  I think he's definitely more suited for a 43 DE than a 34 OLB.

The Michigan boys don't have the production.  Winovich looks like just another guy to me.  Chickillo 2.0, but maybe a better version.

I love Burns.  One of my favorites in the draft.

Sweat is a guy who looked stiff and like a 43 DE when I watched him move, but he's such a phenomenal athlete and his agility & COD times were outstanding, so I wonder if he could be developed to play as a complete OLB.  I'd take him if he's there too, based on that alone.

Of course that's all contingent upon them being BPA.

Ok, did some work on Ferrell the past few days. I was intrigued by some of you guy's evaluations of him and what he can bring, so I wanted to do some work for myself.   Film and stuff, along with some other sites and observations and whatnot.

I admit, I am torn.

I see a monster pass rusher and a very plus run defender.  He is a guy that I would LOVE to put in the 4-2-5 nickel and set loose.  Yes, he is stiff and does not have the bend that we are used to, but he has hand usage and counter moves that are elite.  It is almost more impressive than Burns/Allen in that he has to do it more with technique than just being athletically better than the other guy.  I think that translates better to the NFL.  I can imagine a DL that looks like some combo of Tuitt/Hargrave/Heyward for the two inside rushers, and Ferrell/Watt/Dupree on the outside.

On the negs... simply put, the guy has not been put in a position of having to cover at all down the field.  Yes, some flats and boundary trips but no dropping into zones, man seams, nothing.  At least, not that I could find.  I am not sure if he can do it at all, was not asked to, was not schemed for... whatever.  That all being said, I have reservations with him playing in our base defense.  Now, say what you will about our base and scheme, but we were in our 'base' defense 30% of the time last year.  I realize that we can say just change the scheme and that it shouldn't matter, but the charting shows that it does.  If he goes in at 3-4 OLB, he can be an elite pass rusher, and has played some standup.  But, every OC will know that when he is in, he is coming, meaning the other guy will be the drop OLB.  While that may not sound like a big deal, knowing who is coming and who is dropping is something that can make a big difference.  Now, I could be wrong and he might can do some drops just to keep them honest, but it cannot be a skill that he is elite in or he would have already been doing it for Clemson.

So... I am left with the overall question... would he be a good look at 1.20??

Well... he checks all the boxes.  Power 5, Underclassman, Tombert was at Pro Day.  Maybe he showed something that they like that means they are not worried about it.  Maybe they are looking at him as a nickel pass rusher for the 70% of the subpackage snaps that we do.  Hell, maybe we are transitioning to the 4-3.  All of that said, the future of our Edge is so murky that I am very intrigued.  Watt is a keeper, but Dupree is on his last year.  Maybe Ferrell is the pick here as we start to look more like a 4-3 team.  Maybe he is the pick and surprises me with his ability to drop and cover in a 3-4.  Maybe he will be picked as a subpackage specialist.  If Watt and Ferrell are the future Edges in whatever capacity we put them, I think that I am OK with that.

If we took him at 20, then CB at 52, then WR and ILB in 3, I'd think I'd be OK.

How close am I??

I like what I see in Burns the most, aside from the top guys who will be long gone.  Assuming Burns falls to the middle of the first he is someone I wouldn’t mind trading up a little for.   I would prefer that trade up before Bush.

I know a lot of guys think Sweat he is too stiff, but I would be alright with him considering his sub package role. Not much base these days.

I would like Winovich in the late 3rd.

No - the talent plays at rush end and the first of his kind
