Ugh. Another attempt to soften the game.

It's not though. Onside kicks are basically a relic of the past now because of the running start rule but thatrule has already been in place. That rule you can claim was an attempt to soften the game, not this one. This is just a rule to give a trailing team an option.

It's why some of us were predicting the death of the onsides kick last year.

Onside kicks should be 100% dead. They're a waste of time now that teams can't kill whoever touches the ball. All it is now is hoping for a lucky bounce of a prolate spheroid. 53 onside kicks in 2018, 4 recovered (7.5%). In 2017, the year before the running start was eliminated, 13 of 60 attempts were recovered (21.7%)

Mathematically, if you watch 100 onside kicks, only 7-8 are recovered.

Who wants to watch a play with a 7.5% success rate?

57 minutes of skilled play (passing, blocking, tackling, catching, running, kicking) shouldn't come down to the luck of the bounce.
