To then immediately give Alex Smith the contract that he did lol.

MWil23
I propose implementing the "Aaron Rodgers Rule" into the NFL. If your Elite/Franchise QB delivers your fanbase a Super Bowl Ring and consistent success to go with it for a long period of time, and your FO and a good portion of your fanbase thinks that they should trade him/get rid of him/bash him, etc., then you should be FORCED to trade him and hit the reset button on finding your franchise QB, likely sending your franchise into a decade long search and years of futility at worst (see: CLEVELAND) and limbo at best (Buffalo, Tennessee, Miami, the Jets, soon to be Denver). @ramssuperbowl99 can you make this happen? Tetsujin
What if RW gets IR'd during 2020, SEA gets the #1 pick, and Trevor Lawrence is still one of the GOAT prospects. Don't they have to take him?
MSURacerDT55
Outside the box thinking: Trade him for two 1sts, Get a good young QB on a rookie contract (1st rounder preferably so that you can have the 5th year option), use this opportunity to continue to build up a good young roster, make a run at it..... Can I unilaterally change the NFL rules? No, unfortunately. But this is a tremendous idea. It should apply to all players. If any tweet telling a player to just take whatever the team offers during a contract extension gets the same number of likes as the guy who rates dogs 12/10 good boy, the player is immediately made an unrestricted free agent and the person who wrote the tweet has to marry Ciara and act way too happy about it. FrantikRam
Depends on what their goals are. Do they want to be a fringe playoff team who wins a playoff game every now and then but never wins another Super Bowl? If so, then pay him. Do they want to suffer for two-three years while building up another QB, but with MUCH better players around him and a larger chance at winning a Super Bowl? If so, then trade him.
