What makes him highly deserving as a 1st? He gets washed out in the run game on film, turned up at the combine vastly underweight and tested out as a very poor athlete. I can’t think of anyone less appealing to the Patriots than Jones.

Well, his pass rush ability alone makes him a potential first round pick. And like I said, given the Patriots burned a first on Dominique Easley once upon a time... I could see them investing in Jones. At least Jones doesn't have two torn ACL's and a lack of production or games to analyze. If I give Jones the benefit of the doubt that he can build strength and improve in the run game steadily over time to where he is not a liability when on the field, then I think he is worth the chance you take on him given what he provides as a penetrator on the interior.

What happens here is Patriots pick Lindstrom for Thuney insurance this year. Lindstrom then goes on to be his replacement for when he leaves for a fat guard contract after this year. Lindstrom has the length to play T, and so he brings versatility across the line in his first year. Lindstrom goes on to multiple pro bowls at LG.

that puts it lightly.

Not the three best prospects available certainly which is why I think they trade out of the thirty-second pick. But if stuck at #32 then I think they'll go Irv Smith Jr. or quarterback, (throw Jarrett Stidham in the mix too). Other than those guys, a defensive back is the only other likelihood I anticipate at the end of the first round. Jonathan Abram, Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, Juan Thornhill, Joejuan Williams, Lonnie Johnson... They're all about the same level so it makes more sense to trade back into the second round and take whoever is left on the board. Plus the Pats secondary is potentially their sturdiest unit on the team right now and they just re-signed Patrick Chung, Jason McCourty, Obi Melifonwu, and drafted Duke Dawson in the second round in 2018. Taking a defensive back early is most likely a safety who can play deep and replace Devin McCourty, improve over Duron Harmon, or serve as a slot-linebacker of sorts.

Most logical and safest pick available but I've come to expect the Pats to not do that 50% of the time or more.

AND the draft game AND the post-draft analysis and rankings, which are pretty much the first thing I'm looking forward to after the draft. I don't know where you get the time & energy @goldfishwars but thank you!

Huge ups for Gold fish. Your work helped me throughout this process. Thanks again.

Now. Why on earth would the Pats take a WR in the 1st when they can get one later in the draft. WR  IMO is the deepest position in the draft. The Pats don't need a super star, they never have and won with players that fit their system.  I would rather have Ol Or DL than follow up with a WR later.

Here a list of some of WR that are more than capable of filling that need successfully.

Deebo Samuel WR
J.J. Arcega-Whiteside

Hakeem Butler [ WR ] Iowa State
Mecole Hardman wr georgia

Hunter Renfrow [ WR ] Clemson

Antoine Wesley Texas Tech WR
emanual hall WR

Stanley Morgan

David Sills

Nick Easley

Jalen Hurd

Cody Thompson (Goldfish special !):D
