Think he's one of those guys that has a chance to not only make the team, but be a solid rotational guy for his rookie contract and possibly more. He's got good size, 6'3" and looks like he's around 300 now; explosive athlete for his size, at 290 lbs he jumped 35.5" in the vert, 113" in the broad jump, and ran a 4.37 shuttle and 7.32 cone. That's high end numbers for a big boy across the board. He's taken a big jump from last year in his technique and play strength, now he just needs to keep grinding. I'll tell you this for sure; if Looney doesn't make the team and Reggie Gilbert does, I'm going to be properly baffled. He's easily DL6 for me (behind Clark/Adams/Lowry/Lancaster/Keke) and I like him more than OLB5 (Ramsey) and all of our ILB not named Blake. I'm not sure the team really needs 6 DL unless they're planning on playing a fair bit of 3-3-5, but I still hope he makes the team.

Das Gute was talking up Fadol Brown before he got hurt, now it seems like Looney has the lean for that 6th spot. I'd keep 6 DL over the depth at several other positions - similar to what you mentioned above. Last year GB got creamed by injuries on the DL, that may influence the cuts/keeps
boratt
Gute has said its harder to find big guys than anything else in the NFL. Good legs are much easier to come by at any time of the year. If we’re questioning whether or not we might keep a guy, lean toward size. Gute has indicated his priority is such. 6DL yep 9OL yep done done Edited August 28, 2019 by boratt

TheOnlyThing
As set forth below, just 6 defensive players remain from the 2017 roster. For comparison sake, the Bears have 13 such defensive players on their current roster, the Vikings have 17, and the Patriots have 12. Additionally, not a single defensive player remains from the Packers' 2015 roster (there are 6 from the 2015 roster on O and 1 on STs). After less than 20 months on the job, Gute has purged 80% of the defensive "talent" he inherited. There is no denying that Gute has overhauled the defensive roster. Here's hoping it leads to greater success than we've seen on that side of the ball in a long, long time. 2017 ROSTER 2019 ROSTER DL DL Daniels Clark Clark Lowry Adams Adams Dial Lancaster Lowry Keke Brown OLB OLB Matthews Z. mikebpackfan
People are upset about ILB now. It wasn’t much better two years ago.
Packerraymond
If you polled me in 2017 and asked who from that list Id be surprised if they weren't on the 2019 squad, HHCD is probably the only one I'd adamantly say was a long term piece. After the 2014 year, Ted really sucked at anything involving defensive acquisition. He got us Clark in that stretch....and that's about it. Maybe King, we'll see. It hasn't been good in 9 years. Bishop/Hawk in 2010 was by far the best tandem we've had in a decade and even that wasn't much better than above-average. We haven't had a thumper LB like Bishop since he left.

Yeah, I’d say I don’t think not having a thumper is a big issue considering where the NFL is going. Drinking kool aide considering we are going to run a lot of nickel, with prime Martinez we are fine at the position

boratt
ILB Breakdown Martinez, and Goodson are our thumpers Burks is our coverage backer (when he gets back) Greene and Campbell (when he gets back) are our nickel/dime hybrid guys Summers is our redshirt developmental guy Its looking a lot better with the addition of Goodson and Burks/Campbell coming back from injury eventually. TheOnlyThing
There are a slew of new faces who will or may get significant snaps on defense in 2019: Z. Smith; P. Smith; Gary; Goodson/Summers; Amos; and Savage. There are also a number of returning defensive players whose roles can be expected to increase significantly this season: Adams; Burks; T. Brown; and Greene. Really would love to see this newly constructed defense ranked as a top 15 unit by the end of 2019 And by top 15, I mean across the board -- DVOA, yards, points, points per drive, yards, etc.
