Round 3 Pick 67: San Francisco 49ers Select WR Jalen Hurd Baylor

Having watched that tape of him I really like the pick.  I think I can see why Shanny would love him.  You can line him up anywhere.  He seems to have great hands, can get open, can catch under pressure, can catch anywhere on the field and is hard to bring down, so what's not to like.  The meniscus injury is a concern without a doubt.  Why do we insist on picking up players with injuries - like we didn't have enough already?  And Amani Hooker and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson are still there so we could take either of them with our next pick.  As is Julian Love at CB if we decide to go that way.  I hope we take any of those three at 104.  I'm reasonably happy with our paper draft so far.

There are plenty of guards left and I would like to see us take one at 176 for depth.  Beau Benzschawel of Wisconsin would be my choice.  He may still be there with a bit of luck.

Good pick, if a little early. However with his versatility we can probably carry one less RB, one less TE and one less WR which will open up more options on the OL and secondary. I don't want my back up C to be Magnusson any more just because he may be able to play G as well. Just suit up a good backup C and a good backup OG.

This is a poor idea. If Hurd goes down (and history is not in his favor) you go down 3 players. If there are other injuries (and history is not in our favor), then this becomes a major issue. I don't think he ultimately impacts the RB corps - probably just will have a small group of plays designed for him there at RB - but instead of 6 WRs/3 TEs as in the previous years, I can see Hurd's presence helping us go 5 WRs/3 TEs where he is listed as a TE.

Not a fan of this pick tbh.

Another often injured player, converted RB.

I think Lynch and Kyle overthink things at times.

I think most peoples gripe with him is just the round. It was a round too early for me (maybe even 2, though I really thought he was going to end up a 4th rounder.

I love the skills. I love his tape and I love that for a recently converted RB, he's shown legit chops as a receiver. If he becomes a super utility player in the way Delaine was at the start of his career, then its a good pick. If he becomes what Delaine has become during his tenure in Tennessee..he's an absolute steal (or Jordan Reed, still a steal).

But the injury thing is going to be a big concern for everyone going forward.

Love the player, don't love the round, hate the injuries.

Yeah, I was gonna say, if anything this allowing us to go 5 WR. I could see us maybe going two TE, but I think they really want 3 capable blockers for goalline sets, at least until Hurd proves he can be an in-line blocker. Also, Kittle is sort of one of those guys whose tough but seems like he'll miss substantial time each game with some sort of minor injury. It's really important to just have 3 TE's.

But man, our receivers with are just incredibly versatile.

The plays at 0:48 and 1:50 are why this is a great pick if he can stay healthy. That's an exact important piece we were missing.

The route running at 0:40 is rather Pettis-like. He's "planting outside his frame" (as Kyle puts it, iirc) on that double move, selling the route well, and bursting into the cut. It all looks pretty good. You can see why Kyle thinks he's got potential. Hurd could end up anywhere from total dud to Terrell Owens, and I would not be surprised.

I wouldn't worry about position change or weight. Just let him grow naturally, and play him all over the place. He looks to be a physical guy. I wouldn't put him as an inline blocker, but I'm sure he could line up tight and be a decent angle blocker. Try him as a short yardage specialist. Then split him out wide the rest of the time. That guy will be running reverses (and fakes), and be catching the ball out of the backfield on swing passes, on screens, and will be able to line up in the slot or outside. Don't confine him to a role. Sure, the learning curve is longer for a guy to learn several different roles. But are we in a hurry? We have starters at the position. I want to see Pettis blossom into a legit starter. Deebo is going to need a lot of snaps too. Hurd is behind them, and we're going to have to find ways to get him on the field, so he'll have to do different things (in order to be active at all anyway). Let him be a swiss army knife. Don't pigeon-hole him into a role that might not even be the right one.

Fwiw, Deebo has 10 inch hands as well

And a ~40 inch vert. He was weirdly good at contested catches last year for a 5'11" guy. The slant/fade two way to him is going to be a real touchdown getter for us.
