3.71 Dre’Mont Jones DL Ohio State

Great value pick given his ceiling as a disruptive 3-tech.  LIke Demarcus Walker, needs to bulk up his frame to negate NFL OL size advantage to a lesser extreme.   Unlike Demarcus Walker, wins with more than just one move.   Athletic, sudden, and really good hand-fighting technique.   Will need to get lower and get bulk next offseason.   Classic year 2 impact more likely, but able to rotate in for now.   With Gotsis' contract due to expire after this year and Wolfe very iffy to retain, no argument on the pick's value or need.   Would have been tempted to get Pratt instead for ILB, but that would have been need tipping the edge, Jones' ceiling for impact is higher, so no problem.

I like the potential of this guy, saw quite a few mocks with him as a mid 2nd rounder.  We really needed more depth on the Dline considering the contract status of Wolfe, Gotsis and Harris

I hope it turns out better than the last time we tried drafting a tweener on the DL (DeMarcus Walker).

The main difference here is that Dre'Mont Jones is good.

It helps that Dre'Mont Jones is actually a DT, not an unathletic edge rusher trying to transition to DT. The Walker pick really might have been the dumbest of Elway's tenure.

Seems he's more in the mold of Malik Jackson than Walker.

2nd rounders, it's up there.   3rd rounders, there are a few doozies (Carlos Henderson, Brandon Langley alone go for a run for the money).    It's bad though that there are 3 candidates all from the same year lol.  The blessing from 2017 is it was so bad, it probably forced Elway to re-evaluate his draft methodology completely.   He admitted as much last year with his focus on skills & character and incorporating metrics.

But given Rd2 has a higher tier of talent available, yeah it's up there.   I'd have said Ty Sambrailo, except that he's still playing, and even started games with ATL (although their OL was horrible last year, bottom 10 unit in run blocking, middle-pack pass pro with all their injuries forcing him into the lineup).  So at least there's something there to work with.

I think the Walker pick was the worst because he was 100% projection. Even worse, projection as just a role player. That's fine in the 5th round.

You have to admit, though, it's classic Day 2 Elway (or at least classic Elway post-2012, pre-2018).   Walker needed to add 15-20 lbs to play 3 or 5-tech, and once he did, he lost the quickness for which he couldn't afford to lose, given his skills were limited.    All projection.     Sambrailo was a terrible pick because he was such a tweener, and being a CSU product, overdrafted way ahead of his slot.   But given that he's produced, albeit outside of DEN and outside of his rookie contract years, so I guess that gives him the runner-up prize lol.

Jones has some of that risk in that he needs to put on lower half bulk to be effective in run D, but at least he can play right away as a 3-4 DE in pass rush.   He's going to be a pass rush specialist without more bulk, though.  But it's a full round later...with a much more refined skill set in pass rush.    It's a refreshing change to see Elway let the board fall for value, instead of zeroing on his must-have, all-tools-no-skills projection types.   Like you said, that's fine on Day 3 / UDFA, especially as you get later & later...not for Day 2, let alone Rd2.
