2019 Draft Thoughts

Absolutely.

Just the plan at WR this off season did not work. I feel the room is very well stacked. But they definitely need at upgrade at return man and small slot ---- I mean we don't have one.

Raiders jumped us for Renfrow and AR outbid us for Isabella. I do think Keke is waaaaaay better value than Renfrow.

But other teams knew the plan there. We weren't exactly hiding it. The whole league knew what position we were targeting

JA - I think you're letting the tide take you out to sea a bit.

If the GBPs had "a WR plan" (as you say) and that we needed an upgrade at return man and small slot (I note you inserted the word small there...) - they'd have either:

Come away with this upgrade (size not a factor IMO)
Or will find this player in the days/weeks/months ahead.

As you yourself indicated multiple times, there was a lot of WR talent up for grabs in the past three days. The fact the GBPs didnt pull the trigger on said talent speaks to the talent on hand (IMO) - more so than "the whole league knew what position we were targeting....." and snookering us.

Give Gute more credit for that. If he'd/we'd wanted/needed this guy as much as you're implying - he'd have found a way to snag him.

Right now our return man is Davis but unless and until he shows marked improvement in the WR skills - he's becoming further and further marginalized. The new Sheriff in town has shown a preference for tall & fast WR's (and the room is full of them already.) Davis - at 6'1" isnt the "small" WR I think you have in mind - but his primary attribute is speed. In any case, he's the only one who showed any return capability last year. The only one. Our return game(s) were jokes till he showed up - and became so again after he went down with injury.

It's way early and the roster - or make up of those competing for the available slots on the roster - has just begun.

I really like the way Gutey works the draft board and FA, time will tell if these are the right picks.

Two guys I wanted to stay away from in Rd 1, Gary and Oliver, skeptical of both after watching games this year. Gary simply didn't have the production and was not double and triple teamed most of the time as some have stated. Oliver relied on his quickness in college, don't think he translates in the NFL at his size, NFL linemen will be able to handle him. Hope I am wrong about Gary and wish him the best, just don't see the passion and that is what it takes to make an impact.

Savage looks impressive on tape and compares favorably to Earl Thomas, hopefully he is as impactful or at least close.

Don't know much about Jenkins, but certainly an area of need.

Sternberger, sure lots of TE prospects so in Gutey I trust (for now).

Hopefully, Burks progresses because we got nothin next to Martinez, which concerns me as today's NFL requires a multi skilled athlete at ILB and Martinez is just not athletic enough to command that roll, he needs to be our 2nd best at that position. Lets hope for good health next year.

Love this draft! This draft was all about depth and Gute nailed it. My only regret was losing those two 4ths but I understand if they feel they were going to lose their guy. Those 4th's could've gotten us a legit returner,  slot receiver gadget type player and RB who was higher on there board they probably missed out on.

I think we could have stayed at #30 or traded back and still get a top S.  Oh well, that's just me.  The other picks, PS maybe?

But if we stayed at #30 and Savage was gone was the next S on the board a good value there?  Without knowing the draft boards of any of the teams this is all just conjecture.  Gute wanted this kid and didn't want to risk it.  Savage has the one thing you can't teach = speed.  It will be fun to see all of these new draft picks and FAs play this summer.

We're steeped in the MM offense and I think to a certain degree our perspectives are colored by that bias. Do we even know if MLF's offenses utilize "slot receiver gadget type players?" We may be having discussions and trying to fit a square peg in a round hole that doesnt even exist.

MVS and EQ had amazing years for rookies. Especially day 3 Wrs

The Pack was looking at one spot, the cheapest usually.

I'm hardly worried about it. We have several guys that can work the slot in Adams, Graham, Jace, Allison.

Don't count out ESB either. He's a much bigger dude than the usual slot guy, but he has terrific athleticism and good speed - that size could be a nightmare to defenders. I rather like the idea of a big slot guy IF they have enough athleticism and good adjustment skills.

The only surprise for me was not taking a shot on an OT. Maybe the coaches have plans for Spriggs and or Turner that we don't know about. We can always draft one in the First Round next year if necessary. We are probably covered enough to get through this season - knock on wood. TE, DL, picks cover impending expiring contracts and we got our starting Safety.  Weakest position left on the roster is ILB

Perhaps with Cole Madison back and the addition of Turner Gute didn't feel OT was as big a need now?

Last year he like Dion Lewis and that tiny guy.. uhh. Batten/Batson? I don't think it's his highest priority but he can utilize them.

The only players on the roster likely to be our returner next season is probably Trevor Davis and Natrell Jamerson, maybe Tony Brown and Dexter Willliams. Otherwise we're in trouble. I thought we were going to recommit to improving our ST play but we simply did not have enough draft picks to pick up a return specialist and it also seems like we stuck out in UDFA if we were looking for one.

I wonder if they'll consider Savage there?

Madison is a guard. The consensus is that Turner is a guard too, but could be used in a limited role at Tackle. Don't know if that's how the coaches see it or not

I hope not! He needs to focus on one thing, becoming a dominant free safety.

I think whoever said, Davis might get another shot because of his return abilities might be right. It's a waste of a roster spot IMO, but what do I know.

Played tackle in college. He's got the length to play tackle, not sure about the rest though.

The top returner on TN last year (by far.....) was WR Darius Jennings: 5/10" / 180#
He was their 9th best WR in terms of yards (101 thru 16 games).
