NFL Draft Day 3 GDT: steals and fodder

As much as Elway really got max value for his picks in Day 1 & 2, with the big Q on whether Lock will work (but at least took the risk 10x down by going 2.42 with Lock instead of 1.10 as he'd been mulling, and pretty much everyone was fearing), this is a brutal trade.   Watson is 31, and is signed for 1 year - and he's a borderline starter.   You don't trade anything for that.

Some of the fans believe this might be DEN & SF having agreed to conditional compensation for SF sending us a 4th for Kapri Bibbs 2 years ago, or for letting us hire Rich Scangarelli.    Otherwise, it's Elway thinking he needs to find a pass coverage ILB so badly to win-now - when in reality, we're a mediocre team who should try and mine ILB, even a meh pool, in case we get 3-4 cheap years.   This is just meh.

It's funny, because until 2018, from 2013-17, after a stellar first 2 years, Elway couldn't save himself on Day 2, and started drafting purely for need Rd 1 - and our drafts tanked.  But his tools-only, swing for the fence approach that didn't work at all Day 2 then yielded a bunch of Day 3 gems (2011-12 were great because he didn't draft for need early, but BPA Day 1-2, then swung for fences Day 3 & UDFA, still does for UDFA thankfully).   So now, he's fixed the Day 1-2 approach problem by going more skills-based....but even last year, threw away a ton of Day 3 value, and just did it again here (at least he made the UDFA magic happen again last year with Lindsay and we hope Jeff Holland).   Weird.
