  • 2 weeks later...

I did a panic when i thought you'd discontinued the game.  It's still THE BEST draft game out there.  So much better that all the lame "project what idiot teams will do" in the real draft sort of games.

This is the...project your own projection game, and it's fun to think about building a team based on prospects you like and stuff.

Though good gracious can we get an extra 3 pick and 5 pick instead of so many 4s next time?  It'd probs make things a lot easier.  Or maybe not.  I don't even know.

Anyway, this my TEAM:

QB: Clayton Thorson (5).
RB: Damien Harris (3).
RB: Traveon Williams (6).
WR: DK Metcalf (2).
WR: Hunter Renfrow (5).
WR: Gary Jennings Jr (4).
TE: Jace Sternberger (3).
TE: Kaden Smith (6).

LT: Greg Little (2).
LG: Drew Forbes (6).
C: Connor McGovern (3).
RG: Dru Samia (4).
RT: Dalton Risner (2).

DE: Jaylon Ferguson (3).
DT: Dre'mont Jones (3).
DT: Gerald Willis (7UDFA).
DE: Josh Allen (1).

DL: Anthony Nelson (4).

WLB: Vosean Joseph (5).
MLB: Blake Cashman (5).
CB: Isaiah Johnson (4).
CB: Julian Love (4).
NB: Amani Oruwariya (5).
FS: Chauncey Gardner-Johnson (4).
SS: Amani Hooker (4).

-------------------

Hard this year, because as always...the 4th round kinda sucked and it's mining for diamonds in the dirt.  Had to make compromises all over to make it all fit in the end.

But I ended up with a team starring 2 TEs most of the time.  I've got a a blocker and a runner out of either, with two top tier bookend Tackles, and a decent collection of IOL where at least someone can play C.

A pair of RBs who can slash through gaps and gimme yards, but both with a physical finish and deceptive runaway speed.

Receiving targets who catch balls in Jennings, Renfrow, consistently and reliably...something my QB Thorson has never had while he led a nothing program to prominence.  Plus DK obviously...who is just...he's no Pete Carroll, but he's legit schmexy and i'm going to apply to the league for special dispensation on the whole abdominal things.

Defensively:

I've got basically a base Nickel  4 man front.

Josh Allen is either a DE, or he's a 4-3 SLB in true base 3 LBer fronts, slip Nelson in there on the other end.  Otherwise he's rotational depth at multiple spots.

Outside of that, i've got a NASCAR all day every day collection.  With Anthony Nelson having a bit of versatility potentially between DE and 3T penetrator.  Realistically should've gone with Dontavius Russel instead of Gerald Willis, would've fixed a lot of gap concerns for me and given far more of a "base" Nose...but idgaf.  Stop.  PENETRATE.   And listen...

Ya'll want to defend Fergy and Allen off the edges with serious disruption up the middle?

The hardest part for me was the OL. I didn't feel like there were a lot of later round guys who could actually start right now. I think I did ok though. The WRs lack athleticism but they're big/reliable targets for Lock. Hill is a home run threat at RB. Despite most of my secondary being day 3 guys, I feel pretty comfortable with that group.

Well I gave this entirely too much thought. In the end built a run-first team...right down to the dual TEs I chose and the physical skill-set of the O-line.

On defense I built us to be fast and attacking, leaving some weakness in the LB corps I feel we can cover up. Starting with Bosa and Winovich we’re just going to come right after you. And there is some skill on our back end.

In short, put a lot of effort into the RBs, O-line, and D-line

Risner, IMO might be one of the safest players in this draft. And I’m really rooting for Bryce Love. Crappy way to end his college career.

I have my dynasty league draft next week, and it’s likely going to disappoint me not getting him. But I’m picking last (B|cons of winning), and RB is the strength of my roster. So he’s ranked lower than he otherwise would be. I’m sure he’ll be gone in top 15 picks (my second choice at 24)

Haha. Well still...

Julian’s slide in the draft was probably one of the bigger surprises across consensus of the draftnik community, IMO. I know many people who never thought he’d sniff the back of the 3rd

I mocked him to the Rams at 2(5) once

OVERVIEW:

Okay, I have to admit, I'm a big Los Angeles Rams fan. That said... This team more likely resembles the Rams' NFC West opponents, schematically. Why? Well, to start with, this team is Air Raid on offense. Only one true tight end, and everyone is a pass catcher. Drew Lock's squad is built to air it out. Emanuel Hall is a legitimate deep threat, with the excellent deep threat that is Hakeem Butler lined up across from him. Hunter Renfrow isn't really a vertical receiver, but I have a backfield that can split out wide and at least one of them is a serious size/speed combo to push the defense vertically. The team wants to air it out, but there are also plenty of check down options. See, this Air Raid is less about 40 yard bombs every play, and more about working every level of the field with receiving options to stretch out the defense - starting with the vertical threats, and working its way to the check downs. It employs a hybrid running scheme that features both power and zone plays and principles, similar to a mesh of the Rams and Redskins.

On defense, this team is built to emulate the Legion of Boom, with defensive backs that excel in press man. These corners are aggressive and physical, and they stop the run pretty well, too. The DBs hit hard (except for maybe Jamel Dean, but he could if he wanted to). These guys will wreck offensive concepts, creating room for a pass rush that comes from every single position on defense. The linebackers are excellent blitzers. The guys at the point of attack can get after it. Anyways, without further ado, here's my team!

OFFENSIVE ROSTER:

QB: Drew Lock, Mizzou, 2.42 (DEN) - Great size, gunslinger mentality, and took Mizzou to new levels. He had inconsistency, but basically every QB this year dealt with either inconsistency or inexperience. Lock has probably the best deep ball in this class, to go with accuracy from a variety of platforms and great intelligence. He's gritty with really nice athleticism and great arm strength.

RB: Bennie Snell, Kentucky, 4.122 (PIT) - Snell is one of my favorite players from the draft. He's not an elite athlete, but he's an elite player. This dude rips off yardage in chunks and has soft hands. He played in a hybrid scheme at Kentucky, and this team also has a mixed-concept blocking scheme. He's a blue collar, high work-ethic type running back with great leadership.

RB: Rodney Anderson, Oklahoma, 6.211 (CIN) - Anderson has undeniable talent, but also some major medical red flags. He has natural receiving ability to go with a great power-speed combination and nice vision. He's the perfect complement to Snell with the ability to split out wide in certain formations.

FB: Qadree Ollison, Pitt, 5.142 (ATL) - Ollison is a full back with half back abilities. He's a great receiver, adding yet another option to catch passes out of the backfield, while also serving a great role as the runner at Pitt with nice production. He can push the pile and blocks with attitude. He'll move around the formation and also serve as an H-back.

TE: Trevon Wesco, West Virginia, 4.121 (NYJ) - Wesco is a very nice blocking tight end with a great frame and real pop in the blocking game. He's an elusive receiver and a big target with nice hands and the ability to wall off defenders. He creates late separation, breaks tackles, and is a real sleeper pick.

WR: Hakeem Butler, Iowa State, 4.103 (ARZ) - Butler is an elite deep threat, with a Mike Evans-type athletic profile and a tendency to make acrobatic and crazy catches. He has the dropsies way too often, but has the hand size to overcome that with training. I like his change-of-direction ability better than DK Metcalf, and while he's not a missile like Metcalf, he still has elite speed for his size. Butler is a Dynamo who can he the Alpha of this passing game and move around the formation.

WR: Hunter Renfrow, Clemson, 5.149 (OAK) - Renfrow is a dynamic route runner with excellent quickness and change of direction ability to go with quality hands. He absolutely abused Alabama's secondary on multiple occasions and will be a stud working underneath routes.

WR: Emanuel Hall, Mizzou, UDFA (CHI) - Fantastic explosion and extreme production in limited playing time this past year. Was great the year before. His hands and route-running aren't perfect, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a more explosive receiver in the NFL. Nice size, too, and he's being paired with someone that he has proven affinity with.

LT: Bobby Evans, Oklahoma, 3.97 (LAR) - A good hands-fighter with superb speed and decent length, Evans is the only blindside prospect beyond the first two rounds of the draft. He's an average run blocker, but can handle speed rushers and flashes the ability to beat power while also being a pretty good technician.

LG: Ross Pierschbacher, 1.153 (WAS) - Pierschbacher is a nice guard who can fit in either a power or zone scheme, but has a limited ceiling due to athletic limitations. He has good discipline, but can he prone to overreaching or lunging. He will hit his blocks and has the necessary power to wall off defenders, with the position technique to maintain his blocks.

C: Lamont Gaillard, Georgia, 6.179 (ARZ) - Gaillard has a mean streak and has drawn rave reviews from competition while at Georgia. He was fantastic at the Shrine and has great timing. He takes great angles, and sets up combo blocks very well. He has good enough size to go with being a finisher, and I think he's a scheme versatile starting-caliber center.

RG: Olisaemeka Udoh, Elon, 6.193 (MIN) - Udoh has a fantastic build and dominated at a lower level of competition with his athleticism. He could be an excellent run blocker and pass protector, and has nice movement skills for his size. His power is undeniable.

RT: Jawaan Taylor, Florida, 2.35 (JAX) - The best tackle in this draft class will be manning the edge of the team. He's a fantastic tone setter with massive size and the the ability to be a road-grader. He's a monster, while also possessing the lateral quickness of a good pass protector.

DEFENSIVE ROSTER:

DE: Austin Bryant, Clemson, 4.117 (DET) - Bryant is a mobile run defender with a great frame. He's a really good technician as a pass rusher, but could develop some more strength. He carries his weight well and was part of a wrecking crew defensive line at Clemson. He gives great effort both rushing the passer and stopping the run. He has an A+ motor and really nice production. He needs to gain a little more weight to help his anchor, but overall is a really nice defensive end prospect with a pedigree (top-150 prospect coming out of high school), production, and good work ethic.

NT: Khalen Saunders, Western Illinois, 3.84 (KCY) - Short, stout nose tackle who can move all over the formation and has crazy athleticism. He has superb anchoring ability, elite explosion and can do basically do anything you ask him to. He's a really good pass rusher to go with fantastic run-stuffing ability. He can also do backflips to celebrate after he sacks QBs or stuffs runs on third down.

DE: Joe Jackson, Miami, 5.165 (DAL) - Jackson has an A+ frame and is great at tracking the ball. He has the ability to disengage from blocks to either stop the run or rush the passer. He could he dominant if he develops more moves.

OLB: Chase Winovich, Michigan, 3.77 (NE) - Honestly, I don't know what's wrong with him as a prospect. Elite athlete, array of pass-rushing moves, can get after the run, very twitchy. Very interesting personality, and I think this guy has the "it" factor to be one of the leaders of the defense. The man is a winner.

ILB: Devin White, LSU, 1.5 (TBY) - I almost picked Josh Allen for my first rounder. I was so close. Allen is a fantastic player and a perfect fit for my 3-4 as an edge rusher, but White is the best ILB in this class, in a tier of his own. There aren't many viable inside linebackers after the first round, and White has superb range, strength, and playmaking ability. Could be one of the best run defenders and coverage linebackers in the league. What's scary is that he's still new to the position, too.

ILB: Jahlani Tavai, Hawai'i, 2.43 (DET) - Tavai is a massive linebacker with great range for his size. He has great versatility to play on the inside or outside, which is great for scheme fit, where he may be asked to move around the formation. He's very intelligent and does well in underneath zone coverage. He defends the run very well with a strong anchor and the ability to set the edge if he lines up on the outside, and could be a dangerous Blitzer, much like Devin White.

OLB: Christian Miller, Alabama, 4.115 (CAR) - Sneaky good outside linebacker with nice production as one of Alabama's best edge defenders. He has really nice explosion, but isn't as good at redirecting. He's not the best run defender when it comes to anchoring, but can fire into the backfield to blow up runs behind the line of scrimmage and has a very high ceiling as a pass rusher.

CB: David Long, Michigan, 3.79 (LAR) - Instinctive and athletic press corner with an elite resumé. He has great ball skills and is generally pretty good against the run, too.

CB: Jamel Dean, Auburn, 3.94 (TBY) - Dean is an elite athlete who is a fantastic press corner, perfect for the team's scheme. He has almost unmatched explosion and played very well with a club on his hand earlier in the season.

CB: Amani Oruwariye, Penn State, 5.146 (DET): Oruwariye is also a good press corner, but offers versatility, as he has also flashed in zone looks and is a steady presence. He's a strong and steady tackler who takes good angles in run support and will move around to safety in certain looks.

FS: Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, Florida, 4.105 (NO): CGJ is a rangy free safety who is also an excellent nickle corner and offers plenty of versatility. He can tackle, but his best trait is being able to match up well in various forms of coverage with a variety of opponents.

SS: Drue Tranquill, Notre Dame, 4.130 (LAC): Tranquill began his career at Notre Dame as a safety before transitioning to linebacker as he grew. Here's the thing - he still has safety speed and excellent change of direction ability. He can line up all over the formation and matches up very well with tight ends in coverage. He can play in the box or further back, and he's an enforcer in the running game.

TEAM CAPTAINS
Drew Lock
Bennie Snell
Lamont Gaillard
Khalen Saunders
Devin White
Chase Winovich

PERSONNEL GROUPINGS:
Base 3-4:
Bryant Saunders Jackson
Miller White Tahvani Winovich
Long Tranquill Gardner-Johnson Dean

4-3:
Winovich Bryant Saunders Jackson
Tranquill White Tahvani
Long Oruwariye Gardner-Johnson Dean

Nickel 3-3-5:
Bryant Saunders Jackson
Miller White Winovich Tranquill
Long Oruwariye Gardner-Johnson Dean

Dime 2-3-6:
Saunders Jackson
Winovich Tavai Miller
Long Tranquill White Dean
Oruwariye Gardner-Johnson

On offense, we would feature Anderson out wide and take Renfrow off the field in two tight end sets, with Butler sliding into tight end. We could also work Ollison in as the third tight end in Super Big sets, with Hall as the lone receiver split out wide.

We could really wreak havoc with split back sets with Anderson's receiving ability and ability to run out of the shotgun.

We have a very versatile offense.

On defense, I'd love to be able to move Saunders around more, but I don't have a second heavy to man the middle. Saunders would be fantastic playing 3-tech, in my opinion, but at nose he's still very good against the run and offers more pass rush ability than just about any nose out there. I'm very comfortable relying on him, Winovich, Bryant, and Jackson and subbing Miller out against bigger run sets, while putting Tranquill on the field. Despite being much lighter, Tranquill is actually better against the run IMHO. In all, this is a very versatile defense and I wouldn't hate asking White to line up in man on tight ends or running backs as a big safety. Heck, I'm comfortable placing Tranquill on receivers if I need to. CGJ has better coverage ability than your typical safety, and Oruwariye is a corner that could play free safety or nickel. Could do a lot of press man on the perimeter and asking CGJ to be a deep centerfielder with a lot of zone in the shallower middle in dime sets if I'd need it.

Anyways, this team isn't perfect, but it's almost perfect for everything that I'd want to do and offers the ability to score on big plays or march down the field on offense, with a defense that could bully the other team's receiving group and be pretty good against the run.

Sorry it took me so long to post! I've been working on this since yesterday to make sure that I have everything worked out for how I'd deploy my team. I had to go back and tweak roster construction several times. Initially, I had Josh Allen and Zach Allen, but that left my team weak in coverage. I ended up trading Zach for Austin Bryant so I could go get Jamel Dean to play press and traded Josh for Christian Miller so I could get Devin White to do everything.

I remade the O-line and receiving corps about four times apiece to get the optimal combo for versatility.
