Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Pace has never been afraid to move up in a draft to go get his guy. He has also never been afraid to work with the New England Patriots to get a trade done. Those two attributes came together for Pace in the 2019 NFL Draft when he moved up from the 87th overall pick to draft Iowa State running back David Montgomery with the 73rd overall selection.

Pace spoke about that trade with the Patriots on the Mully & Haugh Show on 670 The Score in Chicago and outlined just how tense it got before the deal was finished.

"In that moment in the third round, you only have five minutes [between selections]," Pace said. "That trade wasn't concluded with the Patriots until like a minute to go on the clock. You can imagine [it was] pretty tense. That's when working with guys you're familiar with, not only [Bears Director of Football Administration] Joey Laine, but also the number of deals we've done with the Patriots makes it pretty easy."

The Bears general manager went on to explain that a lot goes into a deal like that getting down.

"It was tense," Pace said. "Once both teams say yes you both have to call it into the league independently. Then they say 'OK, you're on the clock.' That can take some time. You're always a little tense in those moments and working with people you're familiar with helps a lot."

The Bears gave up the 87th overall pick, the 162nd overall pick (fifth round) and a fourth-round pick in next year's draft to acquire the 73rd overall pick from New England. The Bears also acquired the 205th overall selection (sixth round) back in the exchange.

Pace noted it is easier to work with a team to get a deal done when it is a team that he has already dealt with in the past. The Bears have made a few trades with the Patriots over the years since Pace took over in 2015.

Chicago traded inside linebacker Jon Bostic to the Patriots back in September 2015. The Bears received a sixth-round pick back in exchange for their former second-round selection. Pace and the Patriots then made another deal in March 2016. Chicago traded tight end Martellus Bennett and a sixth-round pick to New England in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Pace also made a deal with New England in the 2018 NFL Draft. After selecting center James Daniels with the 39th overall pick in the second round, the Bears traded back into the second round with the Patriots. Chicago received the 51st overall selection and gave up its 2019 second-round selection and the 105th overall pick in the fourth round. The Bears then selected Memphis wide receiver Anthony Miller.

It is safe to say that whenever the Bears are looking to make a trade with a player or in the draft that the Patriots are one of their favorite trade partners.

With so little time to get a pick in once teams are in the 3rd round it's almost essential to have a team on tap you've worked with successfully before.

Looks like Pace and Belicheat have become swap meet partners.
