We did too in Pittsburgh.  He seemed to be a solid character guy and was very physical as a ST Gunner.  However, there is something about WR's who cannot run the entire route tree and catch the ball.  He is a similar physical talent and compares in athleticism and skills to DK Metcalf.  With size, strength, and speed, he wows you.  With results, he leaves you scratching your head and cussing. :DO.o

I expected Wheaton to do well, but Coates never had a chance from what I remembered. Some like to say he had injuries but who doesn't in this league?  Now, lets hope he doesn't return.... I doubt it, they got rid of him for a reason

As did we all. Another gifted WR who had better skills and athleticism than his Combine times.  Wheaton had decent hands, but had a bit of the injury bug and the dropsies.  That dropped TD by Wheaton helped to turn the tide in favor of the Eagles a few years ago. From what i recall, he also didn't do much in Chi-town either.  I think Wheaton was given a fair shot in both places.

I disgaree. I think that he did get a fair shot, but never stepped up when he was given the chance.  He may have been hurt more than many realized with the fingers, but if you are a WR, you are paid to catch the frigging ball. If he couldn't, then put him on IR and get someone who can.  I had heard that he was making catches in practice, so the fact he didn't in games makes him Limus Sweed 2.0 in many fans book. I loved the both the Sweed and Coates picks when  they were drafted, but neither played to their potential in my humble opinion.  He didn't do anything in Pittsburgh or Cleveland, so that's on Coates. I get the potential broken digit or digits, but those shouldn't linger past the off season or a month or two months. Again, if it was worse, he should have been put on IR.

Bottom line is he displayed hands like Robert "Hands of Stone" Duran as a WR.  Stone hands are great for aboxer or fighter, but very bad for a WR.  He dropped short passes and deep ones from what I remember.  I will say that I think the team could have helped him gain more confidence letting him run shorter routes or easy screens to just get more comfortable catching the ball. His drop in the AFC Championship Game against the Pats on third down that first series killed him here in Pittsburgh.

His fresh start in Cleveland didn't fare well either.  He didn't beat out other "Stone Handed" WR's there either. So that is all on Sammy not the coaches in Pittsburgh or Cleveland.

Bottom line is that Sammy got some opportunities and didn't seem to take advantage of them thus far. Likeable guy who has all of the character boxes checked, etc, but if you can't play, you won't be in this league as former Houston and Atlanta HC Jerry Glanville says, "The NFL will stand for Not For Long."

The guy wasn't good enough to make the 0-16 Browns roster, but somehow people thought he could make the Chiefs roster? YIKES.

What diff does that make?  He was the 4th/5th in cleveland and he would be the 4th/th 5th in KC.  KC was not who they were because of the 4th or 5th wr on their roster and the browns were not that bad because  of the 4th of 5th wr.

My lasting memory of him was in the 2016 AFC Championship Game, when he got wide open down the left side of the field and dropped a third-down pass that hit him square in the hands, forcing the Steelers to punt. Then Cobi Hamilton dropped a TD pass, and Eli Rogers lost a fumble that gave the Patriots a short field for the final dagger. Luckily for them, Ben Roethlisberger threw a desperation INT late in the game, so everybody could just pretend that the loss was his fault instead.
