Activated10
I always read and heard that Dungy built the great Bucs defense of late 90s and early 00s and that Jon Gruden came in the right time and won the SB with Dungy team But also read and heard that Dungy defense with Colts consistently ubderpeformed and it wasn't for Peyton Manning he would of been fired few years before winning SB in the 2006. So was Tony Dungy a elite HC, consistently top 5 HC throughout his time with Buccaneers and Colts? Was only great on the Buccaneers and then average on the Colts or was he great for Colts as well as it wasn't defense that didn't cost the Colts it was Peyton Manning choking under pressures or Bill Polian not getting enough talent Edited May 12, 2019 by Activated10
lancerman
Well that's because whenever a Peyton Manning team under achieved there needed to be a scapegoat even though the one title they won came off the back of his defense and the team slowly fell apart once he left

MWil23
*I always thought he was great at establishing a culture, expectations, and getting a team to compete/buy in. As a motivator and man, he's elite. *From an X's/O's standpoint, he's probably average. Basically, IMO he's Marty Schottenheimer or Andy Reid level (great at building/rebuilding, has flaws) with a ring thanks to Peyton Manning and company.

CP3MVP
Tony Dungy’s defense in the postseason won that championship. Peyton was horrible
MKnight82
He helped build the Tampa 2 defense which dominated the NFL in the early 2000s and also won a Super Bowl as a HC. He absolutely deserves to be in the HOF.

That's more than enough to get him to the HOF, when combined with the "right place, right time" factor of riding Peyton Manning's wake through much of his prime, and what he achieved as a coach there.

Polian became infatuated with Manning, and drafted specifically to surround him with "weapons" first and foremost. If he had drafted like a more rational GM, the defensive side of the ball would have gotten more attention. That's not really on Dungy. You can't run a Tampa 2 without some very good players at certain positions, and the Colts rarely had them.
Malik
I wouldn't call him elite in terms of gameday coaching. He was far too even-keeled to the detriment and lacked in game adjustments on his teams. He was very good at all the other aspects of coaching though. Those Colts defenses were underrated. 4 of them under Dungy where in the top 8 in PPG and was essential to them winning that 1 because of his defense. If Bob Sanders was able to remain healthy the defenses would have likely been more consistent.
