htfryar
It's almost like the guy who says running the ball doesn't matter is the father of a QB or something. Oh, wait...

Nah, I'm just having fun with you. As for the data not lying, stats can be manipulated to show whatever you want them to show. Running the ball not mattering is one argument I can't get behind. Yeah, data might indicate that all you need to do to win is have an efficient passing game. You know how you do that? Run the ball enough to keep the defense guessing on what's coming next. The play action pass is one of the best offensive plays out there. Yet, it only works if the defense has to respect the run. So... yeah. I'm not buying it that the run game doesn't matter. I give you props for finding some interesting data and generating lively debate though. And just for giggles, the following is said in the Anti-Dak voice... Well, I guess we won't win much since Dak sucks.

Well, I guess we won't win much since Dak sucks. Here are a few key points though: 1. Its not that you need to run 0 times. Its that running 10 or 40 times doesnt effect the outcome statistically. 2. Its not really a " make stats say what you want" scenario. There is literally almost 0 evidence that a good or bad running game effects your chances of winning. Its a proven fact. 3. The big one here: Play action passing is *HUGE*. But handing it off isnt. One of the articles shows were a team play actioned 50 something times in a row without handing it off 1 time, and they had incredible success. You just need the concept that you might run it. htfryar
Dude, you can bash your head against the wall all you want. This is one thing no one is going to agree with you on. Even if you are right, which I am not saying, no one would agree with you. It is just too engrained in our football minds that you need a balanced attack to have success. It doesn't matter what data says. It doesn't matter. Especially with this team and it's history of success when the team ran the ball well. I have no dog in the hunt. I am not a Pro-Dak or Anti-Dak camper. I don't give a crap who the QB is, who the RB is or who anyone at any position is, so long as they play hard and do their job. I don't care if we win by running it and controlling the clock, win by throwing the ball all over the yard or win because the defense is dominating. Just getting the W is all that matters to me. Then, again, I love the Cowboys whether they win or lose. So, I guess I just typed all of this for no reason. LMAO

DaBoys
cor·re·la·tion /ˌkôrəˈlāSH(ə)n/ noun a mutual relationship or connection between two or more things. "research showed a clear correlation between Zeke Elliott rushing for over 100 yards and the Dallas Cowboys winning"
SweetFancyMoses
No stats to support my position, but I think it's about a mentality that one team is more physical and thus dominating the other. Olineman for the most part would rather run block than pass block and dlineman would rather pin their ears back and go after the QB. Plus we always associate long time consuming drives with running the ball, and those drives let our defense rest. I could see that a team like the Patriots who use the short passing game like a running game could accomplish the same thing.

I vividly remember the stat lines and commentators (mainly Madden and a drunken Summerall) mentioning during games that Dallas (for a number of years) was nearly undefeated when Emmitt rushed for 100+ yards. But hey, the running game doesn’t matter. No correlation to success, so we should just eliminate the position. ....said no player / coach / scout / executive / analyst / former player ever.

I dont know how to run the PFR queries, but it was a direct pull from our games. Our win % was higher when his rushing totals were under 100 (?) yards a game. AdamJT ran it on another site. So it maybe the "dumbest thing you ever heard" but it was factually accurate. Soooooooo.........
