Bold Prediction: Scottish Hammer and Seibert unseat the Veterans

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

So K-Austin Seibert unseating K-Greg Joesph as the starter isn't really a hot take as you don't draft a Kicker if you don't expect them to be a starter.  The bold part of the prediction is the Scottish Hammer to unseat quality veteran punter Britton Colquitt.  Obviously, Britton Colquitt is a very talented punter and Jamie Gillan is more of an unknown talent with a supposedly high ceiling.  Why do I think this will happen?  The Financials... The Browns will save over $2.2M per year for the next 3 years with Gillan punting versus Colquitt.  I think the Browns probably would like the idea of having two young talented players at Special Teams locked up on the cheap for the next 3 to 4 years.

PREDICTION:  K- Austin Seibert unseats incumbent K-Greg Joseph

                         AND

P-Jamie Gillan unseats incumbent P-Britton Colquitt

What do you guys think are the odds of both K-Joseph & P-Colquitt getting unseated this offseason by our new talent?

Colquitt cost 2.8M. If it’s even lose Gillan will win the job.

Pretty sure Freddie will be making the cuts and he will probably keep the better player unless it is close. My hunch says we keep Joseph and Colquitt. I haven't seen the youngsters yet so it's just a guess. The rookies can go on the practice squad.

Nah you don't draft a Kicker in the 5th Round to risk some other team stealing him, by signing him off your practice squad.  Barring injury, Seibert is pretty much a lock to unseat Joseph.

Gillan the "Scottish Hammer" is a longer shot due to inexperience, but the financials help his odds significantly.

If joesph wins the comp, then he wins the comp and he is miles a head at the moment.

Colquitt will lose unless he is dominant. He will also have some trade value, especially if a punter goes down in pre season.

Thought I read somewhere that Joseph's advantage is in part to the Hammer not knowing how to spot the ball for Seibert?

I've heard that Joseph is looking way better than Seibert at the moment. Obviously there's still a long ways to go until the season, but if Joseph remains looking that much better, you cut Seibert. I was all for us drafting a kicker, but Seibert seemed like an underwhelming selection at the time. Hope he proves me wrong.

Colquitt is a very solid punter, but I wouldn't be shocked if he's cut (or hopefully traded) for the rookie.

I heard each punter held twice for each kicker and Joseph went 4-4 and Seibert 1-4. Just one day and they were questioning the rookie holding ability but I heard they split them so we'll see. The battles have barely even begun at this point but Seibert will have to make the 53 you don't gamble at that position.

I like Colquitt and Joseph in the battles.  It's about winning games.  They aren't going to keep a kicker if he's not kicking better than the other guy.  Early returns haven't been great on Seibert, but it's still early.

We know what Colquitt can do, and I think there's familiarity and trust there as a punter and holder.  I don't think money savings become a factor for final cuts here on a team that is trying to win a SB, unless it's a totally even call.

I’d be surprised if Seibert wasn’t our K despite the bad showing in the spring.  As @Toneloke38 stated, I don’t think you burn a 5th on a K and then cut him immediately.  I mean, it wouldn’t be the upset of the century if they did but it would be surprising.  To me anyway.

I’d be surprised to see Colquitt get cut.  I get he’s paid significantly more, but he’s also one of the best in the league.

If our goal is to win a super bowl, I’m not sure we should be heading into the season with a pair of rookie kicking specialists is our best option.

Especially in light of our special teams costing us 2-4 games last year, I can't see the coaching staff being willing to roll the dice on that again this year. Trading for OBJ and the other moves that they made on the DL/trades for Vernon/Richardson signaled a "we are now in contention mode" philosophy.

Cutting one of the best punters in the league to save a few pennies isn't the move that I'd bet on. The K job is a giant question mark, but I'd be surprised to see us move/cut Colquitt unless they are 100% sure on the other guy.

I could see them keeping the P on the practice squad and “redshirting” him for next season though.

That allows a savings of a couple million without having to field a rookie.

The newer guys also have versatility. Both can punt and kick. If we cut Joseph, it’s not like other teams are going to swarm in and pick him up.
