Jonathan Cooper & Chance Warmack?

Recommended Posts

I seen the Raiders recently signed Cooper after Richie was suspended. Cooper was a can’t miss top 10 guard, why has he been a jag? Usually guards aren’t drafted that high unless they are considered some beast. What went wrong? From the same draft class, what happened to Chance Warmack another highly sought after guard at the time

Warmack was soft.  OL, especially the interior guys, need a nastiness.  Warmack didn't have that.  Dude had all the physical traits and didn't get hurt much, but he didn't know how to be mean.

I'm confused as to the OP. Are going at why the Raiders signed these guys?

If so, that's an incredibly easy question to answer.

I think with both they had issues staying healthy and dealing with conditioning and weight overall.  Both were very good in college and moved guys around easily and could lean on them.  In the NFL it is not as easy to do that and you have to be quicker with your feet and be able to move and be in great condition.  They did not have that and could be beaten in pass pro easily because of it.  In the right system with the right coach as a rookie things could have easily been different for them.

It is not that easy to stay motivated and compete on a bad football team and both were on them early in their career.  Especially with Warmack coming from a dominating and winning culture at Alabama to losing pretty consistent especially his 2nd and 3rd year.  There also is a reason why some of the best guards in the NFL used to be tackles in college, Zach Martin, Brandon Scherff, Marshal Yanda, Rodger Saffold, Kelechi Osemele, Andrus Peat  etc

I was so sold on Cooper.  I thought he was like the surest thing ever.

I knew Warmack was gonna suck though.  That ridiculously slow speed at the combine should've been a giveaway that he wasn't that athletic.

Didn’t Cooper get a pretty nasty injury early on?  Wonder if he recovered

I thought Warmack had developed into a somewhat solid NFLer, looks like I may have been wrong on that 1.

I remember it was the crazy movement skills he had as a guard.  It wasn't something you usually see in guys that big.
