Draft update:

First batch of bonuses are reported in the original thread. Among the top 10, we've got everyone signed except for Drew Rasmussen and Brice Turang. We're still waiting on the bonus reports from Arbert Cipion, JT Hintzen, and Joe Gray. Between those 3, we should be saving some money against our bonus pool, in addition to the $416,600 we've already saved among guys with reported bonuses. We also have another $330k we can go above our pool without losing a draft pick, so the net here roughly adds up to us having the $3M slot and about $1M more to throw at Turang.

Guys who have signed in rounds 11+, but aren't listed in the thread because they have no reported bonus are: Joey Barron (22), Brady Schanuel (27), Kekai Rios (28), Michael Mediavilla (34, great name), Franklin Hernandez (37), Caleb Marquez (39).

International signing update:

We can officially put a bow on the 2017-2018 international signing period as of yesterday, and we went out with a bang. First, we signed Jolon Lun (or Jolon Zhao, not sure which he goes by) from China. I'm low-key really excited about this:

16 years old, 95 mph is impressive enough to sign him on it's own, but this instagram post shows the motion much more clearly:

This arm speed is crazy for a 16 year old. There's some violence in the delivery (see the kickback on his arm as he finished his motion), but man oh man. He's hitting 95 here and there isn't even a real mound. This looks like a kid who could hit 100. Great, great, great find.

Then we took whatever remaining money we had (presumably) and traded it to the Yankees for Chad Whitmer. He was a 10th round pick, senior sign last year. He pitched well last year but hasn't pitched at all this year because he didn't make the full season roster, and wasn't listed on any prospect lists. Probably just a guy.

Rookie Ball Update

Here's the opening day Helena lineup.

http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?gid=2018_06_15_helrok_grfrok_1&t=g_box&sid=milb

I usually don't post lineups like this, but it's worth posting, because here's the opening day Helena lineup with player ages and how we acquired them:

C - Jose Sibrian (19, 2015 J2 class, $550k bonus)
1B - Chad McClanahan (20, 2016 11th round draft pick, $1.2M bonus)
2B - Yeison Coca (19, PTNBL in the Tyler Thornburg-Travis Shaw deal)
SS - Antonio Pinero (19, Signed after Red Sox forfeited rights due to LA scumbaggery, $375k bonus)
3B - Jean Carmona (18, 2016 J2 class, $725k bonus)
LF - Je'Von Ward (18, 2017 12th round draft pick, $475k bonus)
CF - Pablo Abreu (18, 2016 J2 class, $800k bonus)
RF - Jesus Lujano (19, 2015 J2 class, $450k bonus)
DH - Nick Egnatuk (19, 2017 5th round pick, $500k bonus)
SP - Max Lazar (19, 2017 11th round draft pick, $475k bonus)

The average age here is 18.8 years old. Every single one of these guys is a legitimate prospect and was either brought in through LA signings, overslot draft signings, and then one trade.

Well done David Stearns. That's what a rookie ball roster should look like.

And I think this is going to be something that largely continues. The 2 big signings we made in the last J2 cycle, Larry Ernesto and Carlos Rodriguez are each showing some tools. Ernesto has had exit velocities of more than 100 mph repeatedly at 17. Rodriguez is hitting .432 through 10 games.

Keep Freddy up, damn it

He's getting a start on Sunday. Suter needs to go to the bullpen. Get Freddy a spot until Jimmy Nelson is back, then reevaluate and see who Jimmy needs to replace.

EDIT: And Corbin Burnes is apparently prepping to join the bullpen this year, not rotation. Presumably keeps the Houser/Lopez spot permanently. It is a sign that he's off limits in trade talks. Contending teams don't trade pieces on their active MLB roster.

Can't say I'm a fan, but with Guerra pitching as well as he has you can't move him out. With Nelson coming back Nelson, Anderson, Chacin, Guerra, Davies/Suter/Peralta is acceptable. Hopefully there are some spot starts for him. I think it's foolish to trade for a SP without giving Peralta and Burnes some consistent MLB time. Right now I'd be looking at SS and C, with a bargain reliever find like Swarzak/Jeffress always a worthwhile investment too.
