Yeah, we weren't paying him $10 Million next year when there's quite a few stopgap options that will be available during free agency this year. Always a chance he could be brought back for cheaper than that too. I just pray to the baseball gods that we're not going into this season with the idea that Hernan Perez is our starting 2B. Please, no.

Stats and Summary

Total Players: 37
17 Position Players (3 catchers, 7 IFs, 7 OFs)
20 Pitchers (2 LHPs, 18 RHPs)

Guaranteed Payroll with 2019 Contracts: $66.925MM (10/25 spots)
Guaranteed Payroll including Arbitration Salaries: $84.325MM (17/25 spots)

Now the payroll is in much, much better shape. Amazing what clearing up $10MM from Schoop does. $84MM, or really about $90MM with a roster full of guys making the minimum, means we're in good shape to add and can easily fit in Thames, Anderson, or Davies if we want.

As for the decisions themselves, the only one that is surprising to me is Cedeno. As bad as he was in the postseason, he was due to make somewhere around $1.5MM in arbitration and was decent in a really small sample (30 IP, 2.95 FIP, 3.50 xFIP). But it's not a huge loss or anything; he's a LOOGY on a team with one of the best bullpens in baseball.

I expected the Brewers to tender pretty much everyone a contract, then trade guys away, so we can safely assume letting Jennings/Cedeno go means teams weren't going to give up anything for them (considering Cedeno and Jennings had each cleared waivers before, this probably shouldn't have been as that much of a surprise). Schoop was apparently widely expected to be non-tendered, with the Brewers selling him to other teams for a few months. I'll be interested to see what type of deal he gets, I think if he's willing to sign a multi-year deal he could fairly easily surpass the $10MM guarantee from arbitration if some rebuilding team wants to give him a chance to audition, then trade him away.

I also think the Schoop non-tender means we're going to be more active in free agency than I would have expected. Obviously, I still want Kikuchi (despite his reported preference to play on the West Coast), but we could comfortably fit him in along and still have somewhere around $30MM to play with before we really start to hit the payroll ceiling. And with $14MM of that committed to Thames, Anderson, and Davies, there's even more flexibility. So do we go out and get a Jed Lowrie, Andrew Miller, Adam Ottavino, or Yasmani Grandal? We could afford any 2 of those guys.
