How the hell were they overachievers? They faced Flacco and Sanchez on their way to the Super Bowl. Once there they got handled by the Saints although the scoreboard didn't show that. That was also the year Peyton stole the MVP from Brees. Not to mention they are probably the biggest whimps in the league not going for the undefeated record because they were afraid of coming up short. Panthers were a legit team that just ran into the best pass rushing defense in recent history and arguably all time. MVP Cam was a monster that year. They didnt go undefeated bc they sat their starters in an incredibly gutsy move to acknowledge that the regular season didnt matter. All that mattered was the SuperBowl. And we have very different memories of that Superbowl.
Elky
The 2009 Colts roster wasn't that great. Their regular season was success was due to Peyton playing out of his mind that year. Their defense was mediocre (18th), they had the worst run game and the only weapons Peyton had were Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark; he made rookies Pierre Carson and Austin Collie look good. Not going for 16-0 was a weak move. But even if they obtained that, there's simply no way you would say that Colts team was 16-0 good on par with the 2007 Patriots. Malik
I don't know about overachievers, but if not for that excellent defensive play that's arguably Peyton's greatest playoff run.
Danger
Panthers. Cam Newton had a career year he really hasn't come close to since. They had a good defense which certainly benefited them. The Colts had been successful for a long time even winning a Super Bowl I think 3 years prior.

LieutenantGains
Both were overrated imo. Colts were better if I had to choose. Colts won a lot of close games and their point differential was only 109. Below average -0.88 SOS. The Panthers were REALLY overrated NFL teams to win 15 or more games 1984 49ers 248 Point Differential 12.75 SRS -2.75 SOS 1985 Bears 258 Point Differential 15.94 SRS -0.19 SOS 1998 Vikings 260 Point Differential 14.89 SRS -1.36 SOS 2004 Steelers 121 Point Differential 9.00 SRS 1.44 SOS 2007 Patriots 315 Point Differential 20.06 SRS .37 SOS 2011 Packers 201 Point Differential 11.36 SRS -1.21 SOS 2015 Panthers 192 Point Differential 8.12 SRS -3.88 SOS The only team you could argue that the Panthers were better than are the 2004 Steelers and 2011 Packers. But those teams played harder schedules (especially the Steelers) Edited July 23, 2019 by LieutenantGains

But those teams played harder schedules (especially the Steelers) How were the Panthers overrated? Almost everybody considered them to be a fluke in 2015. Very few people on this site gave them any kind of credit and most people, because I remember it, still had them behind 5-6 teams in the rankings until we were like 11-0. Hell, we were point spread underdogs to the Cowboys on Thanksgiving. And the media rarely talked about us, other than Newton getting some MVP talk (before he turned into Superman statistically). Panthers maybe weren't as good as some of those other 15 win teams, but you have to be absolutely dominant to hit 15 wins anyway. Calling the Panthers the worst of that group is like saying Toy Story 2 is the worst of the series... sure, it's probably true, but it is still a really good movie. Panthers were a fantastic team. And for all the talk about "not beating good teams" that was a dumb narrative throughout the season (as if being dominant against bad teams is so easy; people made it seem like every team vs an easy schedule should have went 15-1), in the playoffs the Panthers absolutely destroyed a great Cardinals team and got out to a 31-0 lead against the Seahawks. In comparison, the 2011 Packers got knocked out of the playoffs easily by a 9-7 Giants team with a negative point differential. I'd take the 2015 Panthers over them. Jlowe22
I wouldn't call the 2009 Colts overachievers. For a potential 16-0 team, they weren't as dominant as the 07 Pats, but that hardly means anything. They had a prime Manning and a top 10 defense. They could have easily won the superbowl. For me to call them overachievers, they would have had to look like they had no business being there, and that was not the case. They had the upper hand until the onside kick, which is more luck than I like to depend on.
Bearerofnews
Neither. Both were really really good and dominant teams with alot if underrated talented, that had some bad plays in the SB cost them a title.
Blackstar12
Definitely the Panthers the Colts had many years of success prior to 2009 and made the Super Bowl 3 years earlier.
