How should the Cowboys handle Zeke? Re-sign him, that's how.

  1. 1. How should the Cowboys deal with Zeke?

    • Deny him a new contract and wait for him to return
      5
    • Add money to his remaining two years but deny him an extension
      6
    • Sign him to a new 3 year deal that makes him one of the top three highest paid RB in the league
      14
    • Sign him to a new 5 year deal that makes him the highest paid RB in the league
      6
    • Trade him to the highest bidder
      8

I don’t know how you go to Zeke and say “we’re gonna pay you less than the guy with bum legs” and expect him not to laugh at it.

The guy with bum legs isnt one incident away from being suspended indefinitely.

I’ve thought about this many times. I have no idea how other teams haven’t jump on board.

In a league that is known for teams “copycating” what the successful teams do...it really is amazing more haven’t started following the NE model.

Suspensions and injuries have the exact opposite effect on contract guarantees. The former voids them, the latter activates them.

So I have learned a little more about Zekes situation.

Zeke did not accrue a season this year, no matter what

Zeke will show up/sign by week 10, if he doesnt

  • He forfeits ~$1.5m this year
  • He forfeits ~$5-9M next year
  • We gain another year on his contract if he doesnt show up by August 6 2020

I knew Zeke didnt have much leverage. But he *really* doesnt have any leverage. Because he didnt accrue a year this year, we basically have him for 2 years at $13M.

So it doesn't make much difference to Zeke if he shows up for game 1 or game 10?

He gives up a couple hundred grand each game he misses. But thats about it.

And he has already made it clear that he isn't willing to put the wear and tear on his body at that rate of pay...

Unless the team looks terrible without him and Jerry caves, we aren't going to see him until the 10th game.

Jerry has never caved for a RB. Doubt he starts now.

But I think Zeke signs by week 1, because by all accounts the contract offer will make him at/near the highest paid in the league. So Zeke forfeits making a little less than $1m/game by not signing.

I think he just didnt want to go to camp. Allegedly Zeke hasnt even counter offered the last deal, so he is probably just going to sign it.

Jerry on being worried about Zeke's contract:

“No, I don’t consider it … when have I ever not done one?” Jones asked back, referring to previous contract disputes over the years. “You just keep plugging along. I don’t want to see a cliché but its what we tell these (players), it’s one foot in front of the other and go. Do what you have to do on the next play and keep going.”
