Teams that lost a great player at one position and went the longest without replacing him

A bit overrated, but still a good player. Also Brian Sipe, as mentioned above, and Frank Ryan went 52-22-2 and won a title after Graham retired.

Obviously you don't replace a guy who's in the GOAT conversation but Cleveland has had bouts of fine QB play in the interim....probably not really since Kosar, though.

Took awhile for the Vikes to replace Moss. They immediately drafted Troy Williamson with the pick acquired from Oakland. Harvin and Rice never panned out long term, though Rice was brilliant in 2009. Berrian was a free agent bust. Moss returned in 2010 for a few games. Jennings was a free agent bust. Patterson and Treadwell were busts.

Finally struck gold with Diggs and Thielen who ironically went in the 5th round and undrafted, respectively. MN has invested heavily at the WR position since Moss was traded. Pretty good WRs before Moss in Cris Carter and Jake Reed too.

We've had just as many bad WRs as good ones it seems.

Besides Culpepper, we haven't had a long term answer at QB since Fran Tarkenton.

Sid Luckman played in the 20s and 30s folks /thread

The Bears are the only team in the league to NEVER have a QB with over 29 TD passes.  Never a 4000 yd passer.  And MT10 could become the first QB in franchise history with back to back seasons of 3000+ yds and 90+ rating.

Luckman played in the 40s (39-50). If he'd played in the 20s he'd have no stats.

It's tough for me to really buy into that, because McMahon was a good QB, with potential to be very good but he liked beer more than training, and also played with reckless abandon, which was fun to watch but not a prescription for a long career.

McMahon could have been great, then came the bounty from Forrest Gregg

For the Saints the most recent at least has been TE Jimmy Graham to maybe Jared Cook this year.  They had one of the most dynamic QB-TE combos in the league, only to trade him away and him fade into oblivion due to injury, while they haven't had even a good receiving option at TE since.

Before that you can look at any of the LBers from the Dome Patrol before trading for Jon Vilma.  And before that Archie Manning till Drew Brees?  Pretty sure there wasn't a good QB in between there.
