Then next year, instead of going with a Qusterback, Matt Ryan. Miami said, screw that! Let's draft OL Jake Long to protect nobody at QB! 😂

That's a revisionist way to look at it - Jake Long was the consensus #1 player in that draft, by a pretty good margin. It was a no brainer, the Dolphins negotiated a deal with Long about four days before the draft even started (back then, the team picking #1 could negotiate prior to drafting their guy).

QB or no QB, Long was supposed to be a stalwart LT - injuries popped up and kind of ruined that.

What's scary is that someone on Miami's staff wanted to draft him 10th overall in 2007 (ahead of Willis and Revis).

It was the Texans' staff - specifically, current 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/dc-sports-bog/post/did-kyle-shanahan-want-to-draft-john-beck-10th-in-2007/2011/08/09/gIQAD1xM4I_blog.html?noredirect=on

The Texans ended up drafting DT Amobi Okoye that year. So, it didn't exactly work out well either way. Patrick Willis and Darrelle Revis were still passed on.

This story never made sense to me, because the Texans had just traded away two 2nd round picks for Matt Schaub. The only way this story works is if it's before the Schaub deal was made.

You don't take top OT over top QB. If it was 2013 draft that had top 2 picks going OT and your best QB prospects were Geno Smith and EJ Manuel then ofc you take OT. But when Matt Ryan goes #3 and pre draft analysts had him as a top 10 pick , YOU ALWAYS TAKE THE QB!

Again - revisionist history.

Matt Ryan had PLENTY of question marks on his arm strength and accuracy. He was also pretty beat up as a "one year wonder" guy, as his career wasn't exactly special at BC until his Senior year. He also threw 19 INTs that Sr year, so there were a lot of questions on his decision making in college. He was far from a sure fire pick at #3... let alone #1. That year, Ryan wasn't quite Geno/EJ leave - but his body of work wasn't too far from that. A lot of people back then had Deleware QB Joe Flacco as the top QB from that draft.

Atlanta had no choice but to draft a QB - they traded Matt Schaub the year before, and then were blindsided when Michael Vick was prosecuted for his crimes - they literally found themselves in no-mans land with no QB worthy of note, so they picked Ryan. It worked out, but there was a lot of uncertainty with that pick.

Jake Long and Glenn Dorsey were 1a and 1b in that draft, Ryan wasn't in the discussion at 1 - and nobody thought much about it.

That's true ... Many thought that Matt Ryan was going to be a bust ... As you say he had a lot of mark question, but after his rookie season, the doubts were almost over, he just needed to prove that his rookie season was not a fluke and he would continue to progress.

Max Hall was awful!

But his only win in his career was against the previous super bowl champions, New Orleans Saints!
