HC Pos will be fielding a team in the process of rebuilding in his first season but that's not to say there aren't young players to build around moving forward.

2019 opens with a nice essential preseason tuning game for the team to get adjusted to the new schemes being implemented by Pos and crew against James Madison, but they get a tough, rather bleak game after that in week 3 at Penn State., from there on, all the games should expect to be competitive.

--

PSA: I will be playing all the games for this dynasty unlike the Troy one. I will be playing on Heisman difficulty. Coach XP will be turned to slow.

I'll be recording important games, however most games will be in the post game report style.

However against the FCS team James Madison I'll just spare you the time and say I won 46-33. Defense was rather disappointing and should have a better showing against the lowly James Madison.

  • Holy Steamrolling Sackmachines Batman. There's a good outlook for TWO 81 OVR defensive ends, that would be gamechanging for this program.
  • Really need at LEAST one of those guards to take a liking to Buffalo because as it right now. They're only going to have one on the roster next season. Woah boy.
  • Mike Kemp is also a really interesting player. 90 Throw Power, 81 Throw Accuracy and 80 speed would make a tremendous dual threat QB. I need a bit of speed as a crutch unlike when the CPU controlled Mendoza at Troy. Kemp would come in right away and be an instant starter as a true Freshman.
  • Paying more close attention to the speed of skill position players this time because when I'm controlling the players that can actually make a difference. Additionally I set the speed slider to 35 so it's more impactful than usual. Rodney Cooper has a serviceable 89 speed while not being a dreadful pass catcher.

Paul Posloszny makes his return to Happy Valley meeting fans with a standing ovation.

2b01f2d30ed73a10e6f1331401515692--jackso

Knowing his team was fighting an uphill battle, Pos had this to say:

"I still have lots of friends and family here, but as much as I appreciate everything Penn State has done for me and how many great memories I had while playing here, we intend to win the game today. I've talked with my guys and we are going to make sure we leave everything out there on the field today. We're going to fight until the last whistle no matter how the game is going. It doesn't matter who in the media thinks we do or don't have a shot we're looking to make a statement."

_______________________

  • It helps when your team gets on the board first. QB Kyle Vantrease leads the Bulls down the field for an 11 yard pitch and catch to Charlie Jones for a score. (7-0 Buffalo)

However Penn State would answer back on a drive with quite a few chunk plays to Freshman RB Devyn Ford and TE Pat Friermuth.  (7-7)

  • Vantrease gets the team down to about the 34 yard line and on 4th down Pos elects to go for it knowing it's out of the Kickers range. Unfortunately the Bulls don't convert, returning possession to Penn State.

Penn State gets a first down and then stalls out punting the ball back to Buffalo.

  • Solid first down run by Jaret Patterson, but then Vantrease has his pass picked off by Sophomore phenom LB Micah Parsons.

Penn State goes down the field but the defense holds strong in the redzone forcing a field goal. (10-7)

The game continues on very uneventful until midway through the 3rd quarter, aside from the Nittany Lions kicker missing 3 field goals some wide, some short. Fast forward to late in the 3rd quarter and Kyle Vantrease proceeds to throw another interception, this time in the redzone. Lions take it most of the way down the field and kick a 40ish yard field goal. (13-7)

  • Doesn't get much better for QB Vantrease, on the next two drives he throws his 3rd interception, and Fumbles the ball. At this point HC Pos knows that Vantrease is visibly shaken and elects to bring in backup QB Dom Johnson. Dom Johnson is a little more mobile and can avoid some pressure that Vantrease can not. Most importantly he's got a fresh head and this game is still close. Dom Johnson leads Buffalo down the field and 2nd string RB Kevin Marks gets the goal line TD (14-13 Buffalo)

Penn State would return the favor and quickly at that. Devyn Ford busts open a long TD run set up by flawless blocking by the receivers. 2 PT conversion is good. (21-14)

  • Dom Johnson had momentum though and with 2 minutes left in the quarter is able to throw a TD to WR Daniel Lee. (21-21)

Buffalo Holds Penn State to a 3 and out.

  • Penn State gets 2 sacks on this drive late in the game even taking a timeout of their own expecting to get the ball back. However Dom Johnson has ice in his veins and bounces right back each time. He leads Buffalo down the field just inside the redzone, and the Kicker kicks a game wining Field Goal despite James Franklin's best efforts to ice him.

Paul Posloszny in the post game interview:
Reporter: "Paul, what does it mean to you to come home and take a win that no one could have anticipated from your team here in Happy Valley?"

Pos: "I know it sounds really cliche, but I'm proud of these guys, I'm really really proud of them. Everyone played remarkably today. Especially the defense. To come out here and win a game that no one would have expected them to win inspires so much confidence in them moving forward and can be the game that puts this team on the map."

Reporter: "Who's going to be your starting QB moving forward?"

Pos: "You know, we have the utmost belief in Kyle, and he's going to be the guy for the foreseeable future. We saw that he was snowballing today and we know that's not the guy he is. I told him to just relax and to prove himself again next week. Dom did a phenomenal job in relief and we're so fortunate to have someone of his caliber that can step in at a moment's notice."

Really need to cut down on the turnovers, but Vantrease just let things go from bad to worse, he couldn't shake the frost off after he made some mistakes. Not shown here is that my boy Yetur Gross-Matos has SIX count them, SIX sacks. Penn State as a team had 11. The offensive line could not handle the pass rush, but the run blocking was adequate. The defense played amazingly considering we lost the turnover battle 4-0. They were great on 3rd down all day long.

  • Realizing that Warren Lilly and Derrick Pruitt were inevitably going to slip away from me over time so I decided to back out on them. Lilly is going for some other small school (can't remember off the top of my head which one)
  • Found another stud in Rondell Harris, he leapfrogged Joe Young for me, so far so good on that front.
  • Also decided to go with Travis Hardin. I have a few other TE's on the board, some with higher overalls, but a TE has to be around at least 80 speed and be able to catch for me. I don't care about their blocking ability, If I'm going to run I prefer to spread things out either way.

Coming off a huge win on the road against #22 Penn State. Pos is looking to keep the momentum going against Akron and them Roos.

Bulls get the ball first but can only muster a single first down against what is undoubtedly the strength of the Zips, their defense. (Punt)
Zips get a few first downs but then CB Roy Baker picks off an underthrown ball by QB Kato Nelson.
Long field to go, we get a little bit of distance, but then have to punt the ball, Zips have it with relatively good field position. They march down field and score on a TD run by their RB. (7-0 Zips)
(I forget the details of the drive but Vantrease ends up throwing a short TD pass to Daniel Lee.) 7-7.
They run once, and then on the lone big defensive blunder of the day CB Roy Baker gets beat deep for a 66 yard score. (14-7 Akron)
The offensive line is not fairing well at all, and Vantrease isn't handling it well, he throws a pick into obvious coverage.
Defense holds and they miss a long field goal.
Two drives later same score, Vantrease fumbles the ball, they get down to the redzone, kick a chipshot field goal. (17-7 Akron)
Each team would make it to the endzone one more time before the end of the half (24-14 Akron).
Midway through the 3rd quarter, Vantrease throws his 2nd pick, his 3rd turnover of the day, but HC Pos elects to leave him in the game even though some of the fans want backup Dom Johnson.
On the very next drive, Vantrease is driving down in the redzone on the verge of making it a one score game. He drops back and tries to step up into the pocket but is sacked from the DT from behind.

QB Kyle Vantrease suffers a torn rotator cuff and is out for the season.

Well one way or another, Dom Johnson is in at QB now, and on the first play he scrambles for a TD rolling out to the right on a 13 yard run. (24-21 Akron)
Vantrease wasn't the only QB having turnover problems on this day, now in the 4th quarter, Kato Nelson fumbles the ball and gives posession back to the Bulls at midfield. Dom Johnson drives down the field going 4-5 with 57 yards on the day. 2nd string RB Marks scores a TD giving the Bulls their first lead of the ball game (28-24 Buffalo)
Kato Nelson drives down to the redzone with 40 seconds left, but gets sacked twice and can't convert a 4th and 16.

Scoring Summary

Buffalo 7 7 7 7 28
Akron 7 17 0 0 24

Defense played well all game aside from Roy getting burnt for a deep score. Dom Johnson is better suited for this team with a struggling offensive line. His mobility allows him to make plays more independently and have more time to throw.

  • Feeling good about everyone right now aside from maybe Kevin Hudson, depending on timing of visits I may be crap outta luck on him. Scouted out some more guards managed to find 3 that are at 69 overall being unrecruited so I should be able to fill out my depth chart if I can't get Hudson.
  • Given how difficult it can be to recruit DT early in a dynasty I had to jump all over Lonnie Irby once I found him.

Temple   Buffalo
Record 2-1 vs Record 3-0
OVR OFF DEF   OVR OFF DEF
75 74 78   74 70 76

Nothing really notable here at a glance. Temple is the closest FBS school to me though so there's that!

Gonna be relatively quick with this summary.

First half both the offenses were literally clueless. Oh and Dominic Johnson had 3 or 4 picks in the first half. QB is a problem for this team. (7-6 Buffalo going into the half)
Temple got things going and finally figured out how to pass on our defense. They convert the 2 pt conversion (14-7 Temple)
After a few more drives that didn't amount to much and yet another pick by Dom Johnson, Jaret Paterson runs it in from the goal line (14-14)
Temple is now carving up our defense and score a TD (21-14 Temple)
Dom Johnson may have turned over the ball at an astronomical rate, but I'll be darned if he's not clutch. Drives down to the redzone, takes back to back sacks and on 3rd and 20 throws a deep ball completion for a 36 Yard TD to WR Tito Overton (21-21)
Temple offense gets them 3 points on a field goal (24-21 Temple)
Offense stalls on the next drive. But then the CB Russell gets a big pick and we get the ball right back.
Dom Johnson drives us down the field and throws a TD pass to WR Daniel Lee (28-24 Buffalo)
20 or so seconds left, they get a couple completions but the game ends with a pick on a last second hail marry.

Scoring Summary
  1st Q 2nd Q 3rd Q 4th Q Final
Temple 3 3 8 10 24
Buffalo 0 7 7 14 28

So there are too many trends going right now from shoddy QB play early, to Dom Johnson being clutch, the defense playing well. I mean hey we're winning, but it'd be better if we fixed all of these problems. Definitely looking forward to our new QB next year. More on that soon actually.

Offensive Line and QB are definitely feeling like the weaknesses of this team right now. Can't get the run going as well as I want to, don't have much time to throw. I've found that just throwing quick passes is generally the most reliable route to go right now. Trying to think too much about the play just leads to mistakes. Also Dom Johnson's accuracy (or lack there of) is the reason for at least 3 of the picks. 1 or 2 (not sure) where just bad reads by me.

Next Week.....

  • Realized that putting ATH Matt Kemp at DB (probably FS) is also an option.
  • I then also decided to go hard after QB Jason Morris slightly less throwing power and slightly less speed, but more accurate than Kemp.
  • Sidelined TE Hardin to do this.

I don't remember much about the game having played it yesterday but I'll give the scoring summary.

Final drive they managed to convert a 4th and 17, got just inside the endzone but ran out of time before being able to score a TD.

Buffalo 14 14 0 7 35

Good game, but offense stagnated in the 2nd half. Our offensive line is just getting demoralized game in and game out. I'm scrambling a lot more than I would like to. Still got sacked 8 times.

Sophomore RB and Impact player Jaret Patterson is out for the season with a broken collarbone (injury in 2nd quarter)

Amazing how much more rushing yards you get when your QB is running for his life and is mobile. Close game all around. Gonna be honest, I felt like they were the far more talented team despite what the ratings said.

Both defenses put up some big numbers. I think we had 7 sacks and they had 8? A lot of deflections on both sides too. Very eventful game. Not to mention Antonio Nunn was left alone on a 3rd and 11 late in the 4th when we were down on a 4 verts, he came back to the ball since it was underthrown while Dom Johnson was on the run, but he had a nice juke from about 15 yards out to finish the play, in hindsight maybe it would have been better to wait and score with less time remaining because they could have come back late in this one.

Next week we go East to West
