If he holds out LeVeon Bell style and we at least try Dalton for a game or two...

Can he sign the tag and not report?

Best case is he signs a deal. Probable adds ~10M to our  cap, putting us around ~20m

Once he signs the tag, there are heavy fines which are no longer "forgivable" by the team for failing to report

If Dak wants to make a "business decision" he would sign the tag just before week 1, get 2-3 weeks off while getting paid his full salary and "learning the offense", Starts in Week 4 when he's "up to speed" and only risks his body for 14 games instead of 17+ preseason/camp.

If he wants to prove a point, He signs in week 10 (and hopes) that we aren't something like 8-2 and Dalton is balling out. That only gets him 7 weeks of pay and he'd likely become a UFA going into next offseason with a year of football missing from his resume

If you were Dak would you risk giving Dalton a chance to go ?

question for everyone

No.

I wouldn't be super concerned about losing my job to Dalton, but I'm definitely not losing the money I would by holding out.

Dak is playing this all wrong. Take the 5 year 165 or whatever, ball out and after year 4 (because the 5th year always has a massive cap #, the Cowboys will COME TO YOU wanting to extend and lower that number. It's not like he's being low balled here and being offered 20 Million

Dak's playing hardball now and don't think Jerry, for a second doesn't envision this being another problem in 4 years should he acquiesce to Dak's demands. If Dak is truly confident in himself he should be looking at this as a relationship for the next 10-12 years where he "Re-ups/Extends, renegotiates, etc) every 3-4 years and goes down as a Cowboys legend with all that comes with it

His shortsightedness will hopefully end him up in Jacksonville where he'll be forgotten just like David Garrard has been. Why give Dalton the chance to look good and Jerry the opportunity to let you walk?

Especially when Dalton has basically every tool one could hope for to look great.

If he wants out of Dallas, yes. Wait to week 10, hope Dallas is balling, get 6 weeks of pay (~$12m) and then leave in the offseason.

This reads as if you 100% expect that he would want to come back. Maybe he gets into the season and decides "Damn, the Pats looking pretty good right now"

Terrible special teams

Super sketch Def

Questionable OL due to changes and injuries

WRs that led the NFL in drops

RB cant stay out of trouble or in shape

Unknown relationship with HC

8-8

Really, every tool you could ask for

(playing devils advocate to people overhyping the roster)

"Vet deals" $$ and being paid "Top" $$$ are 2 different things

Foles was a "Vet" but he wasn't being paid big $$, JimmyG was making 27 million but that was somewhat offset by a lights out defense that was still making peanuts (Bosa, Buckner, etc)

Brady was the GOAT who should have been at $$$ but was at $$

So, its really 6 of 12, with 1 of those being an under $ Brady and the other being JimmyG benefiting from a vastly underpaid defense

Matt Ryan and the Falcons were a 1 hit wonder

Cam Newton and the Panthers fell off a cliff after their 1 appearance

Peyton Manning, despite his cap hit was nothing more than a bus driver for his last appearance. Osweiler almost won that SB

What's the takeaway Joey is trying to make?

You are 100% correct.  The better research would be to answer the question how many SB winning QBs were being paid top 5  $ the year they won the SB.  My guess is very few.
