Left Guard--Do We Make A Move For A Legit Starter

I watched Kenny Wiggins take a shot at the LG position.  I watched Joe Dahl take a shot at the LG position.  Joe Dahl seems slightly better but still looks like a really versatile back-up.  should we make a move now or wait to see of Joe Dahl can continue to improve?  Getting a better LG might also might put Taylor Decker in a better position to be successful also.  The bottom line for me is that I don't think we have a legit starting LG on the roster.  Should we make a move for one?

Yes.

I'm worried about our entire oline outside of Ragnow.

If Quinn and Patricia are as confident as they seem in us contending, they need to go get Trent Williams.

It broke my heart when you guys drafted him.  I really wanted him in Minnesota.  It sounds like you got a good one with him.

When it comes to offensive lines, it seems like just about every team in the league has issues.  The first problem is that there probably just isn't a big enough talent pool for all teams to adequately fill their rosters with good offensive linemen.  On top of that, the collective bargaining agreement has limited teams so much when it comes to the number of hours they can practice that it's getting very difficult to develop a cohesive unit on the O-line.  Unless you are one of the lucky few teams that have a great line, it seems like all you can do is scheme around your deficiencies.

Wagner has been solid so far.  He was reportedly pretty good against JJ  Watt in joint practices.  Last year he was pretty terrible.  Lets hope that was an aberration.

I heard the opposite about the joint practices with both the Texans and Patriots.

Been concerned all offseason on why they didn't address RG or LG, or just Guard.

Could do a deal with the Red Skins, Bring in Trent Williams, and just slide Decker inside.

Good look in theory...

I don't see the Lions giving up what the Redskins are reportedly asking for in exchange for Trent Williams (a first round pick).  Trent Williams also has some nagging health issues.  Every year, a solid interior lineman us cut because there is a younger, cheaper player on their team.  This year will be no different.

I would be paying attention to teams who have really good interior linemen like the Patriots, Eagles, Cowboys or Chargers.  Forrest Lamp (Played RG ant LT in college) and Will Clapp are a couple of other guys that could be targeted in a trade if a a solid veteran doesn't materialize.

I think you're right in this regard. There's going to be a couple guys available after cuts. I also wouldn't be surprised to see a guy like Beau eventually get into the mix during the season.

I think for this years team, our OL is going to have a few guys change up at different spots as opposed to the solid five guys that we would all hope for.

I mean you guys are right, that's what they will do. No way would they actually pay a guy and go get one of the best LT's in the game. That's never been the Lions, EVER! It's cheaper and more profitable to wait for another teams garbage to pick up, that's just good enough to compete on our team. An if we draft a guy then we'll keep him but we're not reaching out for a guy beyond UFA/draft. Lions gone this route before with limited/mild success. I think the best move they've made was for Sims when they gave up only a 5th rdp to Seattle for a guy that started 5 years and every single game!

Literally two guys that can't crack the starting lineups on good lines... people will accept trading a 7th rdp, guys who've proven nothing to come in compete for a job vs trading a 1st and 4th plus signing Williams to a 15 million dollar deal annually. Like... why idk. Draft capital maybe? All's I do know is you have to have players to be good. I know the Patriot way is to find diamonds in the rough, but GEMS like Williams don't exactly become available often in the NFL if we wanna use analogy's. Decker could be a top five LG, Willams is prolly a top five LT, and Ragnow could play at pro-bro type level at C imo. Idk the extent of his injury or whatever, but whoever pointed that out has a real legit point. The teams have doctors though and if I ran the Lions he'd have to have some test and get ok by my doctors, etc.

I knew posting, that's not what the Lions are going to do. It's just what I would do, It would(IMO) create a dominate line from C to LT with two above average players on the other side. IMO, again, they'd have or should have a top 5 OLine with that unit. Helping out our most talented players on offense/maybe the team(Stafford/Kerryon Johnson.

I have a conspiracy theory:

The Patriots have traded for two different guards today.  They have two really awesome guards in Shag Mason and Joe Thuney.  Shaq Mason is already signed to a long-term contract and is one of the better guards in the NFL.  Joe Thuney is turning into a really good Guard but is still on his rookie contract.  Bob Quin might make a play for Joe Thuney to fill the LG spot.  Not sure what the compensation will be but he would be a great addition to our o-line.

Thoughts?

I think they're just trying to replace Andrews at C.
