At some level, absolutely.

He was a tackling dummy for far too many years. Even while the Colts were going 11-5 three straight seasons, his first three in the league, Luck was getting throttled while playing behind a tragicomic offensive line.

For years, former general manager Ryan Grigson had a Post-it note affixed to a wall in his office, reading “Protect 12.” Except the team failed in its effort to keep Luck clean. The Blame Grigson For Everything Including Climate Change crowd will drop it all in his lap, and there’s certainly some culpability there, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying.

Grigson drafted offensive linemen; he just drafted offensive linemen who either weren’t good enough or weren’t developed correctly. He signed free-agent offensive linemen, guys like Gosder Cherilus and Donald Thomas, but none of them could stay healthy. Grigson knew what the issue was – listen, he was a former offensive lineman himself – and he tried to address it, but he fell grievously short in the effort.

In that, he shares blame with Chuck Pagano, who chose the assistant coaching staff and never quite surrounded himself with the coaching talent necessary to get the best out of the offensive line.

And look, some of this is on Luck, too. He’s the one who always wanted the extra yard. He was the one who thought sliding was a sign of weakness. He’s the one who held the ball until the last possible second, only to take countless unnecessary body shots. He’s the one who wanted to tackle the defender who had the temerity to intercept his throws.

The Colts broke Andrew Luck.

And Andrew Luck broke Andrew Luck.

They share culpability.
