True if McCain transition well to the position, but look at the Vikings roster last year, that was more 'stacked' at the safety position in terms of depth.  Had youth talent with Harris and Kearse and vet experience with Smith, Sendejo and Illoka.

Harrison Smith (Pro Bowler)
Andrew Sendejo (potential starter on the Eagles former starter on the Vikings)
Anthony Harris (starter on the Vikings)
Jayron Kearse (potential starter on the Vikings)
George Illoka (former long time starter on the Bengals)

Stacked is the 2001 Miami Hurricanes where Ed Reed was the starter and Sean Taylor was a nickle and backup, both Hall of Fame players at the position, Reed is in it and Sean Taylor would have been. ;o)

Give me a break, it's the one position we have that's anything more than "awkwardly laughable".

That's fair. We're a woefully inept organization. Frankly how he's still here after literally quitting on the team last season is more baffling than his cap hit.

Jones does have versatility though - he's not strictly an in-the-box safety.

The weird thing is quitter guy Jones has been the model player under Flores this offseason. Doing the right things, saying the right things. I freakin' couldn't wait to see Jones cut or traded after last year's debacle where he had some kind of spat with the DC and sat on the sidelines, pouting.

And then this offseason he comes out and toes the line under a new regime. So unexpected. Not sure what to think at this point, other than good thoughts since we're stuck with him anyway thanks to horrid front office contract management under the old regime.

LB is not that bad with Alonso, Baker, McMillian, DeLuca, Hanks and Van Ginkel.  And QB is solid with youth in Rosen, vet in Fitzpatrick and RB with Ballage who looks good, Laird who is tough and a good UDFA, Gaskins who is talented, Walton if he stays healthy and Drake if he stays healthy.  CB Lammons has played surprisingly well preseason and Jalen Davis can play I feel liked him a lot on Utah State.  OL could be an issue but could say that about a lot of teams.

LB, QB, and every single OL starter outside of the LT are major positions of need for us. Alonso is nothing more than an average-at-best penalty magnet, and Baker showed some potential. McMillain sucked last year and the rest of the guys you named are unproven nobodies. Rosen and Fitzpatrick is easily one of the worst QB situations in the entire league. Drake is solid and Ballage shows some potential but they've both got a lot to prove. We have the worst interior OL in the league, baring none, straight up.

It's kinda funny that you didn't mention Xavien Howard who is easily one of the best players on the roster nor did you mention WR or interior DL which are, honestly, the next strongest positions we have outside of safety.

I don't know how good T.J. is now, but with the Rams, he was a solid starting SS. His biggest issue with us was his tendency towards friendly fire. Dude could lay the lumber, but teammates were collateral damage too often.

McDonald is still solid.

This was more of we didn't want to pay a backup/rotational player $5.1M. Fitzpatrick and Jones are entrenched as the starters with Bobby McCain likely to be in the rotation as well.

Phins have the cap to pay him but they are showing signs of tanking. Meaning they rather roll over the 5.1 mil in cap space to next year in hopes of building a team then caring about finding away to put him on the field this year to be a better defense. Patriots had several situations where they had 3 Safeties on the field majority of the time so finding a way to do that on the phins wouldnt be a huge reach. Im just surprised they couldnt find a team to trade to get a late round pick for him with that price tag if he is solid, which several have stated on this thread.
