Final CUT

Recommended Posts

QB - Ben, Rudolph, Dobbs

RB - Conner, Samuels, Snell, Nix

WR - Juju, Washington, Rogers, Moncrief, 18

TE - McDonald, Grimble, Gentry

OT - Al, Feiler, Chuks

G - Foster, DeCastro, Fred

C - Pouncey, Finney

___________________________

DL - Heyward, Tuitt, Hargrave, Buggs, Alualu, Dan

LB - Dupree, Watt, Ola, Skipper, Chickilo

ILB - Bush, Barron, Vince, Gilbert

CB - Haden, Nelson, Hilton, Burns, Sutton, Layne

S - Davis, Edmunds, Kelly

Specialists - Dangerfield, Matakevich, Sutton Smith

K - Boswell

P - Berryman

LS - Canada.

First topic is WR. The scrap heap is better than what we got and 18 can return. Najeh Davenport can return kicks bc we're not getting past the 25 anyway. And there will be a hold.

Lip tat offers me nothing. But a lip tat. Which offers me nothing. This is Switzer. Switz burgh. Rogers is the most capable slot in making a difference. This battle is between Rogers/Holton/Switzer. For ONE job.

I like 8 OL. The battle here is for backup right tackle. Fred can do that. Since Fred can do that, it's not a Banner year. Fluff. No value. The whole line is versatile. It's gonna be a sieve. Yet, versatile.

ILB. Rightly so. You can move on from Vince. Or you can use him situationally. And on special teams. The young guys offer speed. Begrudgingly. I'll keep Vince here.

Chickilo. Is also borderline. The young guy has upside and less salary. You know he ain't getting there. [to the QB]

I'd never want Dangerfield on the field except on special teams. Like Chidi Iwuoma. Special teams makes a difference. Red. Begrudingly. I'll keep you as well. Sutton Smith makes the team. Redshirt year. Interestingly enough. I tweeted out you need to put Sutton Smith with his hand in the dirt because his value is jumping the snap count and his leverage and ability to dip and get around/under the tackle. I'm paraphrasing here. When you put him at OLB - he becomes obsolete. His Dad liked it. Nice one, Dad.

Jordan Berry. The Giants already got their punter. No family business available here. Just cut him. He sucks.

Gentry will probably be cut after we trade for or sign a TE. I'd think he'd clear waivers though.

I agree and he will get added to PS. I am hoping we pick up Luke Wilson if he gets cut. He isnt anything spectacular but he is a guy that can contribute

I'd give the WR job to Holton.

Switzer. On punts. He dilly dallies and we get block in the back calls and lose net -20. Standard is the standard. When he runs straight ahead he's good for about 8.2 YPR. When he's not fair catching it 85% of the time.

When he plays WR you'll get 2 catches, 10 yards. This isn't PPR. That's unacceptable. He'll run like 25 yards diagonally after catching it and pick up 2 YAC. Cut it up you gina Thornberry. You know what - that's Liza. Point being. The dude is trash.

Holton is a threat. That stomp on the one route was excellent. Pristine. Route running. The vert was a thing of beauty as well. Can't teach speed. Always give me the guy that can make the big play over the ordinary play.

Cam Sutton can return punts. He was good at Tennessee. DJ has been less than stellar. Holton can do kickoffs. He's gonna break one and be the first one, seemingly, since Will Blackwell to break one. Maybe even David Dunn "the one and only" Dunn. I mean, when you can count our KR TD's on one hand - we suckkk.

OJ Howard would be a nice shout.

They won't cut a 5th rd pick. I'd be surprised. But not shocked. Grimble makes $2m and fumbled versus Denver. I think you get rid of him. What's up with the fumbles in Denver. I like the Pine Richland or USC kid, whatever he is, on the practice squad.

^ OJ Howard bc of regime change. No ties. So, he could be available. Also provides good return. And Cameron Brate is their starter.

It'd probably be kinda expensive, so, ultimately I wouldn't do it. But, it's a shout.

And Gentry would clear waivers. But for how long??? Someone would pick him up after an injury. And I don't mind Gen-TREE.

Aka TREEEEEE.

My final thought is on Skipper. He could've caused a chain reaction where you go into a cap cutting frenzy and choose the less expensive guy saving net $4m off these moves alone. It's like splitting hairs.

Skipper over Chickilo

Berryman over Berry

Holton over Eli Rogers

TE over Grimble.

That gives you $9m in space. Not even considering any other savings you make from say, Sutton Smith over Switzer. Considering, Patrick Peterson is gone for 6 weeks his salary is pro-rated and that would be enough to trade for him and get him under the cap. If you start reasonable. 3-2 or better.

Pair of 2nd's seems about right. Probably a player as well. How about Artie Burns. Their secondary is trash.

Looks about right to me but I think they make room for Skipper. Maybe at the expense of RB Edmunds, Red or even Chick (tho I think the last 2 are less likely).

I actually think Chickillo will get put on IR for Skipper.

Offense - - 25 Players

QB - Ben, Rudolph, Dobbs (3)

I will dance with the players here, but I pray for the health and safety of Big Ben.  Last year, I was on record as wanting to keep Landry Jones. No he was not great and has a very limited ceiling.  I do believe that he could provide the occasional spark to the offense that veteran back-ups do. Would I want him to be the AFC Championship starting QB against the Jags or Patriots? Heck no!  However, he was a better than average back-up. That was his role on this team and he was decent.  mason Rudolph has a much higher ceiling and it is to be determined how high that ceiling may be. I think he can be a solid NFL starter with time and maturity in the game. However, I don't want to see him or Dobbs as back-ups. Very scary.  Dobbs is intelligent and can move well, but solid and athletic defenses will give him fits. We saw that this pre-season and the Raiders figured him out in about two series. I don't think Dobbs could ever be (his ceiling)  more than a mid-tier back-up QB. Right now he is the #3.

RB - Conner, Samuels, Snell, Nix (4)

I agree with this list, but I have a lot of questions and concerns with Snell as a RB.  He seems decent as a pass catcher, physical as a pass protector, a willing tackler on special teams, but he is a snail out there as a runner.  He lacks elusiveness, vision and doesn't make anyone miss him nor can he outrun the slowest DE.  He does have heart, attitude character and swagger, but that doesn't help me when I need four or five yards up the middle or when he is one on one catching a swing pass trying to outrun a DL or LB to the edge of daylight.  That is the difference between three yards and  a first down or big gain.

As a pure runner and role back, I would keep Edmunds. This won't happen and Snell is a draft choice and his special teams play alone will keep him on the roster. Edmunds is faster, has more wiggle and can turn it up inside.

WR - Juju, Washington, Rogers, Moncrief, (Dionte Johnson18) - (6)

I am keeping six WR's. On my chart and what I think the Steelers should do is keep Switzer and Holton.  Eli loses out to D. Johnson because of his potential, Switzer because of his KR/PR and Holton because of his height 6'3, speed/ability to get deep and play special teams.  The thing is Eli is the best WR/slot right now out of all three.  He can make more plays week one than Switzer, Johnson, or Holton consistently.  However, this may not be the case come week nine when Johnson adjust to the NFL.  Johnson has a higher ceiling and Switzer offers the most security on KR/PR.  Eli loses out and will latch onto another team as a result.  I originally had him making it, but Holton may have done enough to show he can provide this offense with the deep threat that it wanted from Martavis and Sammy.

TE - McDonald, Grimble, Gentry (3)

I am most disappointed in this group.  Right now Chuks and Banner would be the second and third TE in running situations. Vance hasn't lit it up either, but at least he is healthy.  Grimble hasn't stepped up to look like anything other than a #3 or #4 TE despite some potential. Gentry is a PS player right now.  Like some said, I would like to add a player or actually two through free agency or that surprise veteran cap cut. The kid Willson from the Raiders looks like he could develop into Outlaw Part II. They have a bunch of TE's there and they can't keep them all. They certainly look better than our #2 and #3 option to me.  I would be shocked if the Steelers started the year with these three and did nothing to upgrade.

OT - Al, Feiler, Chuks (4)

I think that big Zach Banner #77 or Derwin Gray #72 makes it. Not a sexy players, but guys who looks like they can develop.

G - Foster, DeCastro, Fred (3)

I am keeping Banner, Gray or both before I keep Big Fred.  He looks like a prime PS player.

C - Pouncey, Finney (2)

The versatility of Finney and Feiler may take this down to 8 players instead of 9. I think they want to save/develop Gray and Banner though.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Defense 25 Players and Specialist 3

DL - Heyward, Tuitt, Hargrave, Buggs, Alualu, Dan (6)

Good group. Big Dan is finally looking like something and Buggs has some potential.  I like Henry Mondreaux for the PS. He is undersized but seems to have a motor, drive and ethic  reminiscent of Chris Hoke.

LB - Dupree, Watt, Ola, Skipper, Chickilo (5)

Not a fan of Chick here, but he can play ST and does bust his tail. The nicest surprises here are Ola and Da' Skipper. they got their jobs the old fashioned way: They earned it!

ILB - Bush, Barron, Vince, Gilbert (5)

Gotta add the Dirty Ole Man (Dirty Red Matakevich). He is a ST demon and actually looked decent in the middle during pre-season when everything is vanilla. The last thing any of us want to see is him playing in the middle during the regular season, but ST's are still 33.3% of the game.

CB - Haden, Nelson, Hilton, Burns, Sutton, Layne (6)

Not what I dreamed or envisioned, but it is what it is.  Hoping that Nelson adds something, Artie plays better and Hilton gets back to his old form. The DL and LB'ers will provide pressure. Can they finally intercept the ball?

S - Davis, Edmunds, Kelly (3)

Dangerfield and Allen are cut or they lose an OL like Banner or Gray to keep Dangerfield.

Specialists - Dangerfield, Matakevich, Sutton Smith

As much of a Sutton Smith fan as I am, he didn't win a job.  Best case scenario is practice squad for him.  I think Spillane outplayed him in games.

K - Boswell

P - Berryman

I think it is another year of Berry. Berryman started out strong, but seemed inconsistent.

LS - Canada.
